I started cleaning today...
Didn't take too many pics, but basically just poured a bunch of old gas into my oil catch pan. Put the parts in one at a time and hit them with a wire brush. Then I put them into a bin of soapy water and hit them with a different brush, and finally I put them back into gasoline to soak. I figure I'll just leave them soaking in gas overnight.
Here's a late photo of the parts soaking.
I also tried washing my spindle parts. My dad bought me a power washer hose attachment a while ago that I had forgotten about. It got its first use today and it did an okay job. I am going to have to go back with a scraper though.
Anyway, I suppose it is progress. Nothing glamorous, but I'm moving forward. Can't wait to have this axle back together and new tires on the truck.

My buddy said a while ago that he gets rid of gas by pouring it on concrete and just tossing a match on it. Well I did that with that tub of gas the parts were soaking in. The amount of black smoke it created was HUGE.
I feel like an idiot for trying that. My buddy probably didn't mean to do it with that much gas at once.
Most of the smoke came back into my garage, so I have a fan going to air it out. I also washed the concrete with soapy water and a push broom because it obviously turned everything black.
That was pretty stupid, won't be trying that again. How do you guys get rid of old gas? I never knew a good way.

I will drop off a gallon of Stoddard Solvent for your next cleaning adventure. You can use it more then once and once you think it is dirty send me a text and I will swing by and pick it up. We have a waste oil burner I can dump it in.
I burn it too, but not all at once.
I have a container for starting fires, I add to it when I have dirty fuel and use when I need it.
I am tire shopping right now...
I am going to stick with the original tire size for now. It is 235/85R16. Anybody have any suggestions? I am going to dig through some old CK5 threads and see what people have said in the past as well.

cooper seems to be the top dog for reg use tires .
i have a set of bfg mud tread and not as impressed . seem to chop way to easy and i have had many setos of bfg and others on this axle and no problems .

A "dream" tire I would look at in your situation is Nitto Trail Grapplers. That's what I'd get if I could get any tire for the crew cab.
I've had a couple sets of Nitto Terra Grapplers and they're pretty good. That's what I'm currently running on the crew cab.
We're running Hercules Terra Trac ATII tires on a couple of factory applications and they seem pretty good. I found about them searching on the interwebs.
I would also look at 265/75r16. Same diameter but a little wider. I think they look a little better.

x2 on the tire size . but not a deal breaker .
common size swaps are
31.7" tall
235/85/16 = skinny
265/75/16 = fatter
32.8" tall
285/75/16 = skinny
305/70/16 = fatter
i run the 255/85/16 tall and skinny 33" tall and 4.10 gear with 1:1 no overdrive at 70mph i turn 3,100 rpm
Went with the Nitto Terra Grappler in 285 75 16, bought them from Discount tire direct. Only a few k miles but I like them.

I think I am going to run them as opposed to the original set of white wheels I got with the truck. It will be nice to have five matching wheels / tires and a full-size spare. No clue where I am going to put the spare though, aside from in the bed somewhere.
I still need to buy one lower kingpin because of how bad I destroyed mine. Going to shop for that today.
Cleaning all of those old kingpin parts in that tub of gas seems like a waste now since I was planning on buying new stuff anyhow...

Lower king pins are $50!!
I should have looked up how much they cost before I beat mine up so badly!
EDIT: Bought one off eBay, I think I have everything I need now to get everything back together. Probably should buy some grease and some new pads and rotors.
