1986 K30 - Rapid Learning

Get 'er cleaned up and solid.
Do you guys think the motor would test better with an empty bed (no load)? I have about 9 wheels with tires and then an additional 4 tires in the bed. I'd guess it's about 500-600 pounds total (?)
Probably wouldn't hurt it to have an empty bed. But the dyno rollers will put force on your wheels anyway.

With your camper shell they might not roller it and do the outside test instead.

if it's to heavy the rollers will not test it. Got a cab over camper around ???? this is part time 4wd ? mine was "full" time could not be dyno'd two speed idle test.

I don't unfortunately. Yeah it's part time 4wd. I don't mind failing the test so long as they give me a list of things I need to change to pass. Then I have a clear road forward.

That's what Beags is getting to. Due to the revolving door of goons there, who looks at it today and gives you a list to fix may not be the same one to check it when you come back. So if the first one is really lacking in knowledge he might give you a shortlist. Come back later and a slightly smarter dude sees things the other one didn't think about and fails you again. Just the nature of the beast when it comes to a state-mandated test run by an outside company on contract to the state.

Goons?
Your being awfully complementary ....

Not having to deal with those guys personally I'm completely assuming on that one. Last time I had to deal with an emissions test those places weren't in use yet. I went to a shop that did the testing, they stuffed a probe up the tailpipe, took a reading at idle and at 2500 rpm. Looked it over and handed me the paperwork.

Well you were right on the money.
They are goons.
Most of them guys should be no where near a tailpipe. I'm afraid they might want an extra sniff....

My folks still live in Arvada, he has to deal with it on his stuff. His '85 El Camino normally throws them for a loop and it's 100% stock.

back in the day Kommieforina had contracted test company, Hamilton iirc, I worked for a licensed repair shop, I was Bar 80 licensed. Customers car would brought to Hamilton by me, be tested for $7.00, fail. I would return it to our shop let have a nice hour or 2 sun bath go back retest $4.00, pass. they failed @ 15% just so they could get the $4.00.Is why Kommiefornia not longer allow contractor to test.

I took it yesterday afternoon to get tested. The guy asks me whether it is the original engine or not. I try to play it cool, try to say whatever will help me get to the next step. I told him that I just bought it and I wasn't sure... that was the wrong answer. He handed me a "COULD NOT TEST" form. The stated reason was "POSSIBLE ENGINE CHANGE".

He was real nice, he just said that his big old book told him there are supposed to be air pumps in the engine bay. When he didn't see them he asked me the question. So @Capt Ron if you're willing I would definitely like to buy that setup from you and install it in my engine bay. I agree with what you said earlier - it definitely seems to just be a checkbox sort of thing. They will see it in there and move on to the next step. Worth at shot at least.

When I got home I tried taking off the camper shell solo. That was also a bad idea. Luckily for me two buddies came by later in the night and we got it off as a team.

Gotta clear out some space in the garage, it's getting full!

Possible engine change. Friggin dummy. Not to hard to look at the emissions lable and see it calls out a 454. But I'm sure he saw the lack of air pumps and assumed it had been swapped.

I think the emissions label is missing. I believe it was affixed to the air clear assembly. hmm Know any at a gm dealer ship could get a new sticker ordered ?????

I could reproduce one if you have a good picture. I do this for some people with 18 wheeled vehicles that run big engines that start C.

Mine is manual, but in all honesty I think I can just add in the air pumps and I'll be good to go. At least I hope
