1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

Looks like it is coming along nicely, can't wait to see how things turn out pretty much the same philosophy I'm working on with my dually and now I'm pretty sure after watching on my dually is gonna have to get an 8.1 when I have the means to.
We got a 06? Irrc 2500 with and 8.1 and an Allison in the fleet at the company I work for, I told the boss yesterday I call dibs on it if it ever gets totaled :D

One of the local yards of which I'm good friends with the owner has an '06 with an 8.1/Allison. but he wants $2000 for the drivetrain. The hoarder in me wants to buy it just for in case, becuase I do that :1zhelp:

yeah good price... about what it costs around here. I am debating eventually doing a 8.1 too. I know others are doing 6.0 but something screams BB to me!!!!

Got a little work done on this thing today. Not as much as I wanted, but you can't win everytime.

I got the NP205 bolted up for good. I had to grind some on the tailhousing of the NV4500 so it will clear the shift rail. Of course took longer than it should have cause I didn't want to take more material than I needed to. So it was grind a little bit, then hang the tcase up there to see if there was more needed. Took 3 times, and everyone knows how much fun bench pressing NP205's are :sign5:. But here are a couple pics just to prove it's in there

In the pic below you can see the Advanced Adapters spacer. This thing works pretty good and seems to be well built for sure. Also hooked up the speedo cable too

And I bolted up the full rear driveshaft's

So this is where things started bringing the suck when I tried to hook up the shifter to the shift rail and noticed it wasn't even close. After looking at it for a while I went inside and started researching and found this thread:
https://ck5.com/forums/threads/np205-to-nv4500-questions.253679/
This shows that Advanced Adapters just so happens to not include in its instructions that the stock linkage doesn't work and you have to come up with something else, nor is it included in the kit :sign27:. So I'm going have to come up with something else like heim joints. Not a huge deal, just annoying. Also, I went to bolt on my headers to the 8.1 and the bolts included don't fit the 8.1. The headers will fit just fine, just the bolts are too large in diameter. So I need to get some different bolts. None of this was a deal breaker by any means....just sucks when you want to get things done and get halted by stupid stuff...oh well.

I did order my fuel lines this last week. So next big project will be getting the entire fuel system done.

Getting so close you can almost taste it....

It is getting closer. I have all the cooling system too, just want to get my crank pulley on first before I put all the cooling stuff on. Sometimes I get impatient cause I want to drive this thing so bad. Hopefully in a few weeks. Next weekend will be screwed cause I need to change the clutch in my daily driver jeep Cherokee really bad, so next weekend will be full of that. But hopefully still in a few weeks we can get this thing closer to a driver.

Think you're moving along at a decent pace for an engine swap.

Yeah, not bad I guess when I step back and look at it. I truly didn't get this thing back to my house until the end of February....so I feel like I'm making good progress. Sometimes I wonder how fast I would be able to get this stuff done if I worked on it all day long everyday....but then I realized I really like my desk job that allows me the funds to do this stuff....so I became ok with being a weekend warrior again :D

Why did you not just get an NP241? Then you would have had a VSS as well?

is it a round pattern 205?

Yes, round pattern 32 spline 205

Why? For less money then to purchase a 32 spline 241 I was able to purchase the AA adapter, and then keep my existing driveshaft's with no modifications whatsoever. With a 241 I would have had to find a slip yoke shaft or convert my existing shaft to a slip yoke (since mine is a fixed yoke round pattern 205) and then modify the lengths as they would be different for the 241 over the 205. Plus, why would I need VSS? I'm doing a full stand alone harness on the 8.1 and with the NV4500, I have no need for VSS at all. All I need is my speedo to work which does with my mechanical speedo onto the NP205.

Does JB Fab make a single lever np205 cable setup? Otherwise I'm sure you can fab up some sort of bracket to mount the shifter from....

I'm sure they do. I think that will be my last resort if I can't get this to work how I want. But I think it will be alright. I was actually thinking of contacting ORD and seeing if I could just get one of their linkages for their twin stick kit (just the linkage, not the kit). Does anyone know if their linkages are adjustable? If that was the case and they would sell me just the linkage (not sure if they will, doesn't hurt to ask though) then I would just be done with it and put that on.

For a moment I thought about twin sticking this thing...but then I realized that for what I'm going to use this for, I really have no need for that at all. I guess it is something I could do later on down the road pretty easy if I really wanted to, but for now I just want the stock shifter to work.

JB fab's linkage (NP205 twin stick kit) is adjustable, I just installed his twin stick linkage a couple weeks ago on a buddies truck. However it's really basic hardware that goes between the shifter and the brackets on the rails. Just little heims, threaded stock, jam nuts and some bolts with nylock nuts. The difficult and most time consuming part will be fabbing the bracket that supports the shifter.

Edit: Here's a picture of John's kit

Yeah, honestly just one of those little linkages shown in the tray just under the shifters is all I would need. That would be perfect actually. Maybe I'll call JB Fab and see if I can just get that from him...

I'm sure he would, otherwise mcmaster-carr has them

FYI....I contacted Jon at JB Custom Fab and he is sending me one of his 3/8 rod ends and linkage for my shifter. Jon is awesome and I have purchased from him before, but I wanted to give him a plug in this thread about how awesome his customer service is.

That is all :pimp:

His products and customer service is top notch, I'll be buying more from him soon :waytogo:

Doesn't the ECM want to see a VSS anyway? I know on my 1987 V10 it gets the VSS from the speedometer.

I forgot about your crew cab having a fixed yoke.
