1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

What does shipping run from Tilden? I was looking at their LS packages.

IIRC it was under $200 to ship freight to my doorstep. Honestly, I felt like the shipping was incredibly reasonable considering what is being shipped...and the fact it came to my house via freight was even better.

We knew you'd be right on it. Can't leave something like that just sitting around right?

I went into the shop last night just to pull the harness back off and clean a few things up...aaannnnddddd before I knew it I had it hooked to the hoist and it was going in the truck :haha:

Nice progress! Did you fire it up?

Haha, no. Its literally just bolted to the motor mounts right now. Need to install flywheel, hook up fuel lines, hook the harness back up, install radiator support and radiator/cooling system, hook up steering lines, install headers, fill up with fluids, and splice my couple power wires (fuel pump, 12v, 12v switched, etc), along with a bunch of other little misc. crap...so I have a long ways :rotfl:

But that's what this weekend is going to be for

Just about everything back together. Got front clip back on and hooked up. Cooling system and wiring harness mainly hooked up, trans/tcase installed (thank you harbor freight trans jack), driveshafts hooked back up, exhaust hooked back up, started splicing wires that are needed to run the motor.

I just have to this week pick up all fluids, get two new o2 sensors that work with this harness (those dont come with the package), get a serp belt (that didnt come with it either), get a new battery (as I stole the one out of this thing for the dodge), splice two more wires, then see what happens when the key turns.

You had a big weekend, Love that GMC grill.

How big of an exhaust pipe did you run? What muffler?

It was a long weekend that was 100% dedicated to the crew cab. I feel like I've been lifting weights all weekend right now. But it was worth it, got just about everything buttoned up except for the few things I have to go purchase this week.

The collectors on my headers are 3", so it's 3" pipe of the headers that meet to a Y pipe just past the t-case. The Y pipe coverts to a 3.5" outlet. Then 3.5" single pipe into a 40 series Flowmaster, all the way out to a 4.5" tip. Should flow good. And I have a Spectra air intake to put on it, so hoping air flow is pretty good for the BBC. With a good performance tune, hoping 400hp and 500tq is attainable, we shall see.

I’ll say it here too, getting closer!

Really close....but I've been here before, so not holding my breath (I may be jaded from my past experience though :frown)

That is going to sound mean. Good luck with the start up. I’m excited for you.

I always have that feeling after a big project on the truck. I'm like, okay now what's going to go wrong and/or not work. :doah:

3.5" exhaust is huge, right? Kinda feels like when I first got the Dana 60 after working on a Dana 44 so long, everything is so much bigger. Kinda like going from a 350 to a 8.1L.

Saw on IG the Tilden 8.1 engine package winner dyno’d his K30 over the weekend. He put down 250/350 on the chassis dyno through 42” pitbulls.

IIRC on his rig, he has an auto and doubler he's running through too right? If that's the case, that's a lot of parasitic loss occurring, especially with 42's as well. So that's pretty impressive still considering the conditions.

Thanks man. For the 30 seconds I got the old 8.1 to run (by manually pooring fuel down the TB trying to get it to run), the idle sounded good with a nice deep rumble...never did get to rev it like that. I think It'll sound really good though.

Yeah, even when I was putting everything back on this weekend, in the back of my head the whole time I kept thinking, "This stupid thing better run this time!" haha

Yeah, 3.5" exhaust is pretty big. When I was putting it all together last year I kept thinking, man that's a lot of air flow capabilities! I've been used to dealing with 1 tons for a while, but when I went to pick up those 2.5 ton rockwells my the buggy my brother and I are building, it was an eye opener to see how massive those axles are.

Going from the TBI350 to the 8.1 was comparable as to when I went from my 38.5's to my 44's :haha:

That 3.5” single exhaust is good for about 465 horsepower, restriction free. I think it is just the right size for that 8.1 :waytogo:

No it's a manual with a doubler and 4.10's, still good numbers IMO.

Agreed...I think it'll work out real good

Ah, yeah it's a SM465 isn't it? Still, like what you said, pretty darn good numbers considering. Did he do a tune on his, or just the flash on the computer that Tilden does? Cause it's not a performance tune that Tilden does. It's pretty much just a pre-flash to remove a few things that they delete from the harness depending on what you need...that way it runs like it's supposed to from the factory. But other than that it's a stock computer tune. Hence why I'm going to have Team208Motorsports do a tune on mine once it's running

Yes I believe it's a 4spd and the Tilden program. He mentioned something about getting it tuned which would be a considerable improvement with the right tuner.
