1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

Well, this weekend I'm heading down to UT to meet my brother and pick up my camper (and see our grandparents who just turned 90 yrs old last month). We leave tomorrow after work. I was debating on just bringing my Dodge as I know it's ready to go for a 5 hr. trip like this...and I've only put about 400 miles or so on the crew cab (though all miles have been smooth and flawless), but decided what the heck, gonna take the crew cab and see how it does (my brother nudged me in that direction too cause he wants to drive it really badly, haha). And this is probably a really good opportunity to test this truck as it's a pretty easy drive down, and my wife has family scattered throughout the whole drive down, so if something goes wrong, there are easier avenues to get fixed and on our way.

I just put some new 265/75/16 load range e street tires on my Dodge 2 weeks ago, and figured a trip like this wasn't worth burning up the BFG's that are on the crew cab, so I tossed the aluminum rims and street 265's on the crew cab. I'm not gonna lie, these rims and tires looks good on this truck too....might just be the truck making the tires look good :cool:

Some may know that I have a really big rubber-made tote that I keep in the back of my blazer that has spare parts, fluids, tools, etc. Decided, why the heck not, I'm just gonna put that in the back of the crew cab for the drive down, that way in case something does go wrong, I'll at least have some stuff on hand to fix what I need to. The tote is freaking heavy with all the crap in it, so backed the CC up to the blazer to push it across the tailgates to get it in the back of the truck. I actually found this pic below pretty interesting. A CC with ~3 - 4" of lift on 265's is almost identical on tailgate height as my blazer on 42's...goes to show how low my blazer really does sit...but also how much higher 1-tons sit compared to 1/2 tons as well...kinda interesting really

Where is that heavy ass tote going to go when you get the camper?

The 1-tons do sit higher...

You also have driveway slope helping the crew cab too.
 
Yeah, I know they sit higher, but the shop slabs are almost dead flat, probably only the slightest grade just for drainage per code...but it's minimal enough to not play a role in the pic

Yeah, agreed, but couldn't justify wearing the BFG's just for a moderate road trip. But honestly, when I have the full load on this truck (camper with gear and dirt bikes in it, plus towing my blazer on the trailer off the back) I'll probably put these tires on there to maximize gearing. Any other time the 285's will be on it
 
If they were mudders it would look way better. Even a stock size mud terrain makes a vehicle look way better.
 
I don't mind the small tires. But I think getting wheel spacers for the rear would improve the look.

Also glad to see you know how to use Chevy tow mirrors lol. I have heard many times over the years . I hate these mirrors. Then you turn it around and flip it and they look at you like you just invented sliced bread!
 
The only reason I don’t like those mirrors as much is because they don’t fold. My 78’s one door folded instead when I found a fence post on accident :doah:
 
Got back from roughly a 1200 mile shakedown road trip in the crew cab (to see my grandparants and pick up our slide in camper). Went to Evanston, WY, down to Salt Lake, back up to Evanston, and then back to Boise. Crew cab ran real good other than some small fuel issues (got some crap in the factory tanks and had glogged fuel filters a couple times to deal with...so some new tanks will be going in sometime soon) but those issues were not all bad considering everything. So have a few small things here and there to iron out, but all in all, I’m claiming a successful shakedown run. Going down to UT/WY empty running 75 mph, I got an average of 11.5 mpg’s (which was hand calculated). I felt like that was pretty darn good! Coming back with the kite of a camper in the back and a really hard head wind the entire way, got 9.5 mpg’s (plus had extra crap thrown in the camper that we were bringing back from my sisters house). Still not bad IMO. First two pics below are heading down, third pic is fueling up in Evanston about to head home this morning
