1989 Crew Cab Tow Rig Build

I swear on my '79 that I used to have that it had welded nuts and those pointed flange head bolts on the frame brackets. Isn't that how they are supposed to be factory. I don't remember having to use a wrench on any nuts for fuel tank to frame brackets.

As far as I know my 89 was completely untouched when I got it, and it had nuts on the backside of the saddle tank brackets that you have to squeeze a wrench up in there to hold to get them off. Getting off isn't as bad...it's getting them back on that sucks even more
 
I would have definitely welded those before putting it back together. That would be one of those "oh I won't be taking this apart again things and then you pull and install it five more times and keep forgetting" moments.
 
I just don't put all 4 bolts back in each bracket. I only put in 3 out of spite. :haha: Part of the reason I used the v-band exhaust flanges was to make it possible to get the exhaust out of the way on the driverside. The passenger side is a fight with the tank selector valve for 1 or 2 bolts.

Funny you say that, cause on the front bracket of that new tank...there are only 3 bolts on that one now :whistle:

And I was going to do this, but I had to get the job done relatively quickly as we had to take the truck that night to get some stuff. Later on I might drop the tank again and weld them on...not really that big of deal really...just pointing out how just because someone has "Engineer" behind their name doesn't mean I automatically think they're smart :waytogo:
 
Took a real quick overnight camping trip with the family on Friday night and then came back on Saturday mid-day. We went up to Cascade Lake in central Idaho. That place is really cool...very beautiful. We plan to come up here many more times in the future. Crew Cab ran great the whole time, and sleeping in the camper was awesome and very comfortable. Still want to do things to both truck and camper to get it real set up, but all in due time.

Camper loaded on the truck again...this time sporting the black rims :pimp:

Then today, I finally was able to meet up with Josh at Team 208 Motorsports to do some tuning on my 8.1. And all I gotta say is wow...he really woke this thing up! It pulls VERY hard, especially in 2nd and 3rd gear, enough to be very impressive, especially the feeling in the seat. I have a small exhaust leak that I need to get fixed that we think is messing with the O2 reading a bit, so once I get that fixed we will do one more small fine tuning session to make sure everything is squared away, but man as of right now, this thing is a beast. I couldn't keep my foot out of it on the way home. My two oldest boys said, "Dad, this thing feels like a race truck now!" haha.

A few more things I want to get squared away on this thing, but I'm very happy with it right now

Haha, you are not the first one to tell me that...I actually get a bunch of comments saying, "Someone drove on the side of your camper dude!"

It's a good looking setup. Glad to see you are finally able to start using it for what it was built for.

What boat?

Thanks man...was a long road building this thing, but it's starting to pay off.

Our plan is we want to purchase a boat sometime this winter. My brother has a pretty nice boat, but he is wanting to get into different boat that fits his needs and family a bit more...so there is a chance I might purchase his existing boat off him. I grew up with a boat water skiing a lot, and I want my kids to be able to experience it as well.
 
Got some work done on the crew cab this weekend. Added some Mr. Gasket soft aluminum header gaskets to try and get rid of an exhaust leak on this thing.

Then I wanted to get rid of the 40 series race muffler cause it was pretty poppy at higher rpms and it was backfiring on deceleration. So picked up a magnaflow muffler and cut/welded it in. I also decided to just add a turndown right after the muffler (right before the rear axle) just to see how I liked it...and I think I like it better this way. This muffler quieted it down a whole bunch, but it still sounds real good. Got rid of the popping...all in all this was worth it. This will work much better for the use of the truck.

I also finally picked up some stuff from etrailer.com to get the trailer wiring hooked up. Added a 7 pin connector at the rear and wired it up, and also added a trailer brake controller in the cab and wired it up...then brought the truck over by the trailer and tested the lights and trailer brakes, and everything is working as it should. So I can now officially start towing shiz with this thing :pimp:

I've decided I like the copper gaskets a little better than the aluminum.
