1989 Diesel Jimmy. What do we have here hmmmm

only flexplate I ever had bad clunked only during idle. never starting driving or under gas.

Can't you tell if a flex plate is cracked,
By starting the rig, then turning it off, and starting it again before the flex plate stops spinning.

If I remember right, it should clunk upon re-start.

Or was that a flywheel.. :dunno:

Had that happen on a motor I rebuilt for a buddies mudtruck, ended up being the flexplate bolts had came loose. Drove me nuts and pissed me off when I figured it out.

Thats what I'm thinking, motor is probally fine, Eric didn't you just put that transmission in there awhile back??

So I realize I haven't updated this thread for a while.

Well gas tank starting leaking and when I pulled the skidplate most of the bottom of the tank came with it. Got a high capacity tank from a member here I looked at putting in but it had one pinhole leak and was pretty rusty on the inside, probably just from sitting for a while so that went out the window.

So the Jimmy just got to sit for a month or so. I ordered up a new gas tank that should be here Friday.

I got some new shoes her the Jimmy too. 300 bucks for all 4 of these BFG ATs, got some weather cracking on the tread. No matter to me, the inside carcass is perfectly fine. They are 35s same size as I have now

Now the next item will be a set of 4.56 gears so that the gearing matches.

Gonna be wheeling it this summer, get the dually running and who knows I may decide to keep the old thing for a year or 2 and swap the body and stuff.

Anyway pretty excited for it to be running again.

Cool, love me some bfg at's. I've had a couple sets on the k10 over the years and now run them on my dodge.

Got the old tank out little trick if you are taking it out for the first time in a blazer the strap bolts are much easier to get to if you put the tailgate down. Straight shot for em then plenty of room.

So this tank was worse than I thought it was.

Its pretty hard to see but there is no less than 8 jb weld repairs on this tank. one with a screw in it to plug a hole. There was also no dent in the skid plate and a huge dent in the gas tank. PO goodness right there.

This is what pushing down with a phillips head screwdriver ( not even very hard, bout the same pressure you would use turning a screw out) did

Went right through several other places looked that thin too.

So thought it was licked and was cleaning the sending unit up to reuse, and low and behold it is so rusted on the top that yep it had some super thing spots on it that just scraping with a screw driver produced holes in it.

I really don't want to spend the money on a new sender but it looks like I am gonna have to. Oh well. Got a buddy that is going to use my old tires and he is gonna hand mount my new ones for me tomorrow so he can get the old ones on his rig

Off to shop for a cheap sending unit :doah:

I was literally thinking of you the whole time I was pulling it Dave LOL mostly of you sides on the blazer, you know the ones patched with angle iron and stuff.

Actually thanking my lucky stars I don't have to deal with this stuff too much

So after much nashing of teeth and cursing. My new tank is in and new sender.

Some PO had butchered the sender up quite a bit and it was so rusty when I tried to clean the rust off it well a hole showed up.

So brand new tank and brand new sender.

Plus new ( old weather cracked but awesome tread) tires and I am driving it again.

Very nice to be doing so.

Now onto chasing down all the other leaks

HOLY GEEZ no one should have that feeling. I knew my seat mounts were cracked and not so good but didn't realize that bad.

I hit a bump today and got reclined a couple inches time to do something about it I suppose

This one had been repaired ( poorly ) at least one time.

This is the front outside mount

And here is the inside rear mount, we shall call it the auto recline mount

Are the pans flat here they kind of look like they should be.

The auto recline mount is so bad and I have been leaking trans fluid some that the padding was soaked in oil. Jimmy had been smelling weird for a while.

Pretty sure I am gonna body swap this beasty but it will be this winter when I do it, so gotta fix it for now as best I can.

My passenger looked almost that sketchy when I got into it. The PO(S) actually bondoed the hole in the floor and the bolts were only into that support underneath. Luckily my wife is only 100 pounds...

Yikes! Good think you weren't in an accident or worse!

I think Chevy thought this might be a long term problem because with the mount in this truck (89) it could only fall so far. The mount is different than some older ones I have messed with.

Probably gonna wait till after the fourth to fix it completely all I have is 3/16 and 16 gauge. I would like something in between

I have an 85 body that is completely rust free and the seat mounts are in good shape. :wink1: I know the guy that brought it to me and I'm sure he could find a way to get it to you. :haha:
