1990 K5 Build ( Ol' Blue ) : Rocker rust...

I have some 16 gauge satin coat sheet here...would be good for making patch pieces. As for the welder, it's yours to borrow, no strings.

i will definitely pay you for the metal, or something!... or supply you with labour to compensate
One night this week or on fri/sat , ill stop by, grab the welder, and check out whats up with the pontiac. When all those goodies come in, ill definitely be there to help ya and learn some more!

Sooo.. once the inner fenders were out i started thinking.. "might as well" ..... Lets just say I'm going to tackle the axles in the 2-3 month time limit i have before i should leave the truck alone ,and get ready to move... Driving 15 hours to my new home with a GOVBOMB 10 bolt rear worries me, I have a ten bolt front already stripped down, 3.73 gears and a rebuild kit already sitting here, I also have the 6 lug SF 14B sitting here.. all it needs is a pinion seal, an order from ORD for the perches, ubolts, and whatnot.. The sickness has struck again, and i will be uploading as i go. Glad to continue this build and make some good progress in the next 2.5 months of time i have, and with as much money as i can afford to throw at it.:thumb:

I'm gonna have to throw a pity party when you move...

I wont be thaaat far, you'll have to come wheeling in all the wicked spots you talk about. If the cards are right this year , we should road trip down to blazer bash aswell. Amazing friends like you, and nick are always worth the trip out back to visit.

Why the move to B.C. anyways!?

Its always been the plan, i stopped half way from ontario where i was born to make some money. I decided ill be done my red seal for crane operating in may, and i just really want to keep exploring and traveling canada. My two sisters also live in victoria, a best friend in whistler, and another really good friend in burnaby. So im just gonna see where life takes me next.

Im stoked to be getting your axles under this blazer soon!!! Ill have to make the road trip if another ck5 party ever goes down.. Especially to put some rounds through that tailgate:weapon2:

Got the 10 bolt 100% stripped and ready , the 14Bolt's brake disassembled, and along with the parking cables. Tomorrow i drop off the 10 bolt to have the 3.73 gears , and master install kit installed.

I also pick up my Inner fenders tomorrow.

The front end parts are on order from rock auto, should arrive by feb 12th.

Moog tie rod ends for the beefy ( 3/4 T? ) tie rod i got off the 10 bolt.

Does anyone know if the ten bolt parking cables should fit the 14bolt SF? From what ive read it may have to do with the year of the 14bolt?

Thats what I've heard as well. When I did my swap mine didn't fit.

How did you remedy the situation? i took the cables from the 14 bolt but not the full set up.. only the back half from the connector that goes on the drivers side frame.

I do not know if anybody mentioned this, because there are a lot of responces in your post, but your TBI intake manifold looks like an Edelbrock or Holley aftermarket intake, and not the original factory one.

That should be enough Nick...as long as they end up roughly where your 10 bolt ones do.

I noticed when i took the TBI off .when i first got it. That, and the throttle body spacer were added from one of the previous owners, its an edelbrock.
Don't know if it really helps a lot with the (stock) poor flowing TBI heads?

I checked to make sure we kept the adjusting metal bracket or whatever it is at then of the 14 bolt SF ones. So I should be able to make it work.

On saturday i woke up, and started loading the 10 & 14 bolt, taking the drums off the 14 bolt really helped with shedding some pounds, as to not blow my rear end out lifting it :doah:.. hahaha

I started with the tie rods, I had changed the ball joints when i first got this truck, as the tire had a lot of play in and out due to shot ball joints. but didn't change the tie rods. The one closest in the picture looked okay, after applying these parts for 2-3 days in rust penetrant, but the other side was gross and completely shot, along with the connecting sleeve.

Figured i should keep and reuse these... like the previous owner would have :doah: haha. With the four pounder i got them out, couldn't get the cotter pins out, but they were so rusted they broke when the nut started to break free from the tie rod. I then tackled the hubs on both side, after rummaging through my piles on allen keys i found the right one and removed both snap rings and got the internals out with two picks.

Since I'm terrible and putting parts and tools everywhere, I've decided on this axle project, i am going to organize everything, in a nice clean order for once... or at least make the effort:deal:. Then moved on to the brakes, got the callipers off, and tucked up top since the inners are out. I was going to change them but, funny how a coat of black paint can change your mind hahah. Moved on to the spindle nuts and got those out as well. Got the rotors off and marker for which side they came from, Inspected wheel bearings and they are timken brand, and in really good shape ( planing on cleaning, re packing, and reusing ) and remarked which side they came from. If the steel seal around the rotor is good, i can reuse right? I will buy new ones if its going to cause much risk.

Moved on to the dust shield thingy..( not sure what its technical name is ) Things were a tad dried up since the last time but nothing was too challenging, for the most part at least. It was nice because since i was going back and forth on sides to repeat the same task, anything kinda dried up always got a coat of rust juice, while i was working on the opposite side. Once i got the shields i used a duller carpenters chisel to separate this slightly apart and then used a metal chisel to open them up. I did nick the knuckle a little so i will try and file anything down before re-installing. Pulled the axle shafts out, layed them out, and exposed the knuckles.

For the top ball joints i used a snipe, with an adjustable spud wrench that fit, because my biggest wrench is a 1'1/8 and i believe the tops are 1 1/4?
luckily for the bottom which is smaller i had the right size because no adjustable wrench can fit down there. Managed to get the the knuckles off with not too much ****ing around. The only issue i ran into was since i am going to reuse these, and I wasn't feeling up to beating the steering arm loose either. The wall of my ball joint press adapters wall, was too thick to squeeze between mine and the pro comp one that came with my kit. I may have just hit it with my hammer until it sorta stayed in place and used the press. it wasn't easy but it came out. This was a moment when i wish i had, even and electric impact...:doah:

I then used my grinder with the wire cup brush and cleaned up these knuckles. I am going to primer and paint these. I wasn't completely planning on using my diff at all for parts unless i had too, but when i found out the axle shafts out of the ten bolt i got had 28 spline axles i knew i needed my axles and spider gears. I drained the diff to check for any bad wear that may have been inside waiting. I once again encountered about a whole cocking gun full of blue tacky gasket goop.. :surepal: The bolts had about half their threads covered in thick gasket crap...:doah:And i called it a day afterwards. I woke up planing on doing more on sunday, but i have felt pretty sick since. I may get some done tomorrow, if I'm feeling any better. I have to tackle the u bolts next and get this axle out from under the truck by saturday, when the 10 bolt is ready to be picked up. The parts order should also be here on friday to rebuild the entire front end... :D.. can't fuggin' wait!

I didn't wind up hooking them up. And this is very similar to my build, nice job man, I did most of the same stuff.
