1991 Chevy Crew Cab "R" / "V" Conversion

Curious to see how your tcase shift turns out. My NV3500 shifter conflicts with mine as well.

Nice work btw!

Thanks everyone! I finally got around to uploading the short video I took of it running. You can hear the vacuum leak that I need to fix but it is nice to know it runs! Also when I took the video it had no muffler, so it was a single 3"open exhaust. I put my Flow Master 70-series on it but forgot to get a video, beside I will probably try to move the muffler back some to cut down on the cab noise more.

Been a while since I updated but its been busy around here! Got the truck running and driving, I had to break down and order the Advanced adapters bell housing and clutch kit to work with my NV4500. It was quite a bit more then I wanted to spend but the truck runs and shifts awesome! I have put about 5000mi on it in the last 4 months driving it almost everyday, it is a blast to drive. I have been tracking the mileage and city driving I have been getting about 10.5mpg which isn't bad all things considered... The current project is to pickup a Military Contact Maintenance Bed that I found and get it ready to install. Going to use it as a service bed for some of the side work I do but also want to start making it into a camper style bed. This is similar to what i'm starting with. (Image from Google) I'm also getting ready to re-gear my front axle and get a front driveshaft installed, that way it will actually be 4wd.

What year NV4500 did you use again? I just put a 95 NV4500 into my crew cab (still external slave) and used the 95 slave cylinder and hydro line going up to the 87 master cylinder and then just adapted the two lines together with a Swagloc tube adapter. Seems to work really well just pushing the clutch in and out while it's sitting (my 8.1 swap isn't done yet so haven't driven it). I was going to run the AA bell housing kit as well but I love the fact that I have been able to keep the 95 bell housing and not spend the coin on the AA bell.

I love your truck man! Was one of the trucks that helped me make up my mind to build one of these :thumb:

Edit: Looking at your pic's earlier in the thread, it looks like you have a 96+ NV4500 with an internal slave setup...in that case yeah I think the AA bell is probably worth it in the end. Like you said, more money (actually way more money than what it's really worth IMO) but makes you life a heck of a lot easier getting the clutch setup working.

Yeah, the trans is from a 1998 truck, The problem i ran into was that my engine has a 2pc rear main so it uses a different thickness flywheel. If the engine had a 1pc rear main i could have run all direct replacement parts. As it is now I'm happy with the way it worked out, the external slave is way easier to work on and the centerforce clutch is like butter!

Thanks alot, I think that is one of the best complements someone can get! You have one heck of a build going yourself! Looks good!

I started reading this thread because I was curious how well the 33s fit on a 2wd. Kept reading because of the fab work and attention to detail. Thanks for sharing. Do you have any tips for anyone putting 33s on a 2wd?

Thanks alot!

As far as 33's on a 2wd, mine went on without a problem but depending on what year and weather its a 1/2, 3/4 of 1 ton it may make a difference. Im pretty sure the 73-80 wheel wells were a little narrower and a 1/2 ton 2wd may sit a little lower then my 1 ton did. the one saving grace is that a 2wd suspension travels almost in a straight line up and down so you don't run into as big of a issue with the tire contacting stuff (also 2wds don't have as much travel..)

My dad used to have a '69 GMC half ton 2 wd with 33/12.50s on 15x8 wheels and they fit perfect with no trimming or anything. I think you would be fine fitting them with maybe a little trimming depending on the wheels.

I had 33x12.50's on a 86 2wd 'burb. The springs were slam wore out, so I trimmed the fenders a tad and put those cheap azz coil spring blocks on it. After that it only rubbed hitting a dip or curb when turning. That was avoided by slowing down.

Thanks alot!

Thanks for the input all. Sorry if this hijacked the thread at all. The truck in question is the same as what you started with is all. A 2wd crew cab. It is actually a dually though. I am planning on putting H1s with the 33s and putting a short box on it.

Get that box on your truck :)

Btw I don't miss that box sitting in my backyard !

I'm working on it Ray, slowly working on it!

Pics of the "new" Contact Maintenance Bed that is waiting for installation. Not the ideal way to transport the bed but we took it slow and it wasn't a long drive.

Well over the weekend I was able to get the bed mounted with the help of my wife. It was a arse whooping but we got it done and for the most part everything is finished.

A few things that may change or get reworked are,
- rework my shock mounts so i can lower the box some
- need to wire up the marker lights, only the tail and licence plate lights work for now
- clean up the latches
- fill some holes....
- make the truck one solid color again!!!

I am really happy with how ever thing looks and works, this bed weighs slightly more then the stock bed, I would say about 250lbs more. It dropped the rear of the truck about 1" from where it sat with the stock bed but it rides alot better! The bed does create a massive blind spot but I am working on a solution for that. The wheel wells are plenty big enough for my 37's and i dont see any reason 42's wont fit in there if/when I go to them.

On to the pics
