I was thinking you would go out there and just start whacking the threaded part to pop the tie rod out. I learned the castle nut trick a long time ago after I ruined a TRE. It's funny, some lessons are better learned the hard way. For just a few bucks, a pickle fork is an excellent investment.
 
Ya know people have tried to give you good advice on both the mechanical and safety aspect of your truck and you always seem to come back with a smart ass know it all comment...........

BTW have fun with the cone washers on the steering arm Mr. Knowitall:rolleyes:
 
How so corey? I asked a question...they told me how to fix it and so I wen't out there and tried it...no harm done by trying that before I go drop a couple bucks on a tool tomorrow.

Ok...you have my attention now w/ the cone washers...do explain.
But wait...I'm not going to need to swap anything else out...just get this off and bolt it in place on the new axle...it already has the steering arm on it so I just have to get this drop pitman arm attached to the new steering arm.


Oh btw I tried threading the nut back on and hitting it after I soaked it with some panther piss and it isn't budging...so I used the floor jack to push against the nut and blocked the axle so it wouldn't rotate...it still wouldn't budge...so is that pickle fork really going to do the trick?
I'm getting ticked now...doesn't seem like this stupid arm should be stuck...what's holding it?
 
lets put it to ya this way Avery...

i've fought the cone washers on my Dana 44 several times. i've tried everything. penetrating oils of all kinds, big hammers, bigger hammers, bigger yet hammers. and i have yet to get them off. one time i even ended up with this...

I did and it didn't work...I even used a pry bar (the end of it where it's tapered) and tried to pop it off from the rod...nothing worked...
Oh yeah and it started to bend the end of the nut...no bueno

Looks like pickle fork is the only option...

sounds like a weightroom issue:rolleyes: :haha: ive never needed to use the fork. when you use the fork, you tend to mess up the boot, at least the people i watched doing it did
 
I'm only going to help you cause this thread is hilarious. hit the arm, not the Tie Rod End. the TRE is tapered and thats what holds it in the arm. do not hit up or down. hit the arm in a 90 degree angle to the TRE.

without pictures it's hard to explain. you should be swinging at it paralell to the ground. hit it really hard with a really BFH. it will pop out.

I just called my buddy and he said that he has a pickle fork and some pneumatic device that I can try if I want so I'm going to go and pick them up from his house and see how they do.
 
Dude incase you didnt know that drag link is tappred(sp?)Meaning perfectly wedged together fit. Combine that with a litle rust, and you got yourself a combe that is a bear o get off. I guarentee you can get that out tonight with no pickle fork. You want to know how? its a trick. I'll explain it if you want... but it is 100% efective.

ok i'll explain anyway mabey someone else could use the info as well... Ok heres what you do, Take a hammer(at least the sixe of a good framing hammer) and WHACK the steering arm itself right where the yellow arrow is. Do this reptedly(usually takes 5 or so whacks) and it WILL come out. I my self own a pickle fork and no longer use it after learning this meathod(unless this method cannot be applied ofcoars) TRY IT tell me if it works for you.

 
oh ya not to keep on you about the centering pin situation but just as an FYI Newer dodge cummins trucks actually use TWO centering pins...
 
Ahhhhh I HAVE TO GET ME ONE OF THESE THINGS!!!!

This thing is so tight...it took all of about two seconds to get it off of there....which is nice because I just realized the new axle has the old arm still on it so I would have had two of these bitches to get off...

Argh argh argh....

yep that will do it too. Do you also have to switch the steering arm from axle to axle? if so that should be fun to read about.
 
for future reference thats a air hammer/chisel. also great for seperating ball joints, also u can use cutting bits and use the air hammer as a chisel to pop rivet heads off, or cut sheetmetal. u just dont have that much control of the side to side movement though.
 
its a cheapie too. probably $20 an HF.

yet another instance where a good quality tool pays off.
