72 burb (this is why i can't go to salvage yards)

No, those will not take the earlier hubcaps. The ones I am looking for are specific to the 3/4 ton trucks up to 72 I think.

I didn't realize the were different pre-72. I hooked up @campfire with some 90's ford 16"s that'll accept GM caps and they're so common they're practically free

Got any pics? I guess I'm not understanding which wheels you're looking for. For some reason this popped into my head while thinking about this

The 3/4 ton wheels are different from the 1/2 ton versions. Here is a picture of one. I can't remember if the hub cap is 10" or 12"....now that I think of it. It takes a different, deeper hub cap than the 1/2 ton wheels. These are factory wheels, 16.5's though.

That's correct. The 3/4-ton wheels take a 12" cap. Ford and GM caps are the same size (not sure about 3/4-ton Dodges). 1/2-ton wheels take smaller caps (10.5" IIRC, but don't quote me on that). The 16s and 16.5s take the same cap.

I went to the two salvage yards and tried one of these caps, rather one that is the same diameter that I have here, on every stock steel wheel they had, no joy.

I think this is the correct hub cap. It's very deep to cover the rear FF axle.

The later caps also fit the FF axle. GM rim on left, Ford rim on right.

I've got 16.5" and 16" wheels that my 3/4 ton hub caps fit. I was thinking about buying those rims I linked. Then I'd have six of each size. If they'd work for your Suburban, Brian, I'd be willing to try getting them to you.

That's the paradox....it would cost more to ship them than they are worth. I have feelers out all around, I am hoping to score a set pretty soon. I have to go ahead and swap the 14 bolt into the rear of the suburban tomorrow. I sold the rear end from it and the guy is coming for it Saturday. Good times. Only wheels I have on hand to use are dually wheels.

Just a note: the Dana 20 that I brought home with the PTO setup isn't a GM unit. Even though it was installed in a 70 Chevy truck. It is a jeep version with an early adapter kit on it. It will still work for my application, it just isn't factor GM as I originally thought. This one is 32 spline, which lots of them were, including the GM version. Oh well, win some loose some I guess. I still plan to use it at this point.

This is the wheel I was looking for. It is 16" so it will take a convention a truck tire but has the small ring to use the 3/4 ton factory hubcap for 72.... I know I have a problem but the devil is always in the details. I could have went with another style steel wheel that would have been "close" but not right. This one is exactly what I was looking for.

I have been hard at work stripping one suburban and getting the other ready to receive all the parts. Looks like my idea of running the 700r4 might be permanently foiled. Careful measurements today tell me that even machining an adapter myself for the combo, the front driveshaft is not going to clear the pan on the 700 I don't think, not withouT clocking the transfer case down. The rub with that is that is kicks the PTO adapter up into the crossmember if I do that. Crap, I really wanted this to work out....challenging I know and I was fully prepared to go pick up a large chunk of aluminum for a custom adapter....damnit. On the adapter from the different companies....not only are they exorbitantly expensive but they all either clock the transfer case down or move it farther away from the transmission. So no joy on them either, oh well. I guess I'll go find a 400 and bolt it up....if ya'll haven't figured it out yet, I don't like easy. There's no fun in it.

So that's not a 12" cap? :dunno:
