these aren't exactly air bumps. They use the same mounts, but use poly inserts instead of air pressure. They were a lot cheaper, but will provide an easy way to upgrade if I decide I need them.

Did not notice that. Now I see it.

Some day you will grow up and run with the big boys.

So, as some of you know, I've gotten distracted from the build with finishing the drive out to my shop. (you can follow that in my house build thread)

To catch up to where I am now, ORD came through with a new set of rear springs with a 20% lower spring rate and that worked out about perfect. I'm sitting 1" higher in the rear than the front which is about right with no passengers in it.

Obviously I've gotten a little behind documenting my progress here, but a few of us guys started a youtube channel and are trying our hand at video. The first installment of the rear suspension upgrade video is now live so check it out:

We've got a bunch of other stuff up on the channel as well, and more installments of the... install... will be coming up soon.

Hey guys, the next part of the rear suspension upgrade series is finished. In this one I show how I outboard the shocks in order to take advantage of the increased movement of the ends of the axles during articulation. This increases the stroke of the shock making them more effective.

Take a look and let us know what you think.

I've been working hard on the cage the last couple of weeks. Pretty much got it where I want it minus gussets and hand holds. Obviously improvements could be made for strength, but compromises for aesthetics and usefulness were made. It's still a vast improvement over nothing and will provide the main function I'm looking for which is to stiffen the body.

In between shooting video, I did manage to get some work done and take a few pictures.

After finishing up the cage, I got the front suspension installed. ORD custom springs, 14" travel bilstiens, and daystar poly insert bumpstops.

Because of the increased travel, it was also time to cut off the front fender fangs.

I held out for a lot of years, but finally had to let them go.

I did a little urban crawling to verify that everything works as it should.

Unfortunately it turns out that my front bump stops bind on compression. I installed them straight up and down and since the spring comes up at an angle, it tries to push them back causing the binding. I was going to try to leave them for now, but I think I'll have to fix it asap.

Next up was getting the sliders and cage tied into the frame and then getting all of the bare metal painted.

After that I started investigating a loose wheel bearing and found a little glitter in the hub.

Yup. Time for new parts. Cleaned the hub and spindle really well and installed new hubs and bearings.

At BB19 I had my transfer case start coming free from the adapter and realized a couple of the bolts had pulled the threads. Time to helicoil all of them to prevent that from happening again.

While I was under the truck, I found some more frame damage around my transmission crossmember.

I need to build a better crossmember that will spread the load (and not hang so low), but for now I just repaired the frame and sandwiched the frame with some longer pieces of angle iron to support it. Should get me by for now.

At present, I'm working on the winch install.

This is the last "major" thing that needs to be done before BB20. I should have time to get a few minor "want to" items done before heading out.

I love "crunch time" just before BlazerBash each year.

All the CK5 Build Threads are alive with new content!!

Nice Work Josh.

I don't want to repeat my 2015 year lol but yes it's exciting and the week of pictures. It's even better when you can attend!

I got the winch install completed

Tucked in nicely between the frame rails.
After blazer bash I'll work on adding a bumper.

I added about 5* of forward angle to my front bump stops and they seem to be working much more smoothly now.

I got my neighbor to help me flex it out just to be sure.

Looking like these ORD springs are going to work out pretty darn good.

While checking everything out, it does appear that my rear bumps aren't set quite right.

20200901_195119.jpg

Under full compression, it looks like that shock was able to bottom out. I'll have to keep a close eye on that until I can get a chance fix it.

Looks like the doors might even open and close while flexed....... those hood gaps, though..... :yikes:

Might be time for an engine cradle with a few through-bars from the firewall to the rest of the cage!!!

We did test it, and yeah the doors open and close which is amazing at that much flex, but you are right, I really need to extend the cage up around the engine.
My hood doesn't fit great so the gaps are a little deceiving, but the fenders do push back into the doors a bit so it's pretty obvious that the front is flexing around still.
