'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

I am going to get everything (except rear springs) through ORD. New front EZ Ride springs/U-bolts, drop Pitman arm, sway bar correction, brake lines, and Tuff Country shocks. I am also going to get the greasable shackles. My goal (understand it might be lofty) is to do this suspension once, and do it right.

might wanna up that to some Bilsteins, the TC's ain't nothing special special.. and the Bilsteins aren't that much more money..

Thanks guys, I'll take the advice and go with Bilsteins. One of the Christmas gifts my wife got me came today (below).....seems like a waste to have her wrap them......guess I'll just start using them. You know, in the interest of her time and all....for her and my daughter I got the three of us membership to a new local gun range. I like their 100 yd lanes. The wife will love it, I'm sure!

Put the castle nut back on and hit it with a BFH or get the pickle fork in there tight and then give the pitman arm itself a good whack. Both work pretty good.

This, and don't hit it like a girl...there are times where it's all about finesse, then there are drag links and steering arms etc.

Missed that - thanks! Figures, the rear are twice the price......

DAYTON 22403
Rear; 5/1 = 6 Leaf, 2-1/4" Pack Thickness, 2350lb Per Spring Rating, 6-3/4" Free Arch
$142.89

Something is wrong with that spec....

Springs are rated in pounds/1-inch of compression. 2350Lb isn't possibly right.

Why are you so opposed to simply picking up a set of good used springs? Pull them apart, clean them up and shot a fresh coat of paint on them and you've got a proven solution. Can you be sure that a "new" set of RockAuto springs aren't a cheap, Chinese knockoff of the old Chevy design?

Yep, smack the bejebus out of the pitman arm around where the drag link end goes through it.

Greg,

I am not opposed to anything......well, ok, I am not opposed to the used spring idea, I was just concerned that the used springs I get will have the same 1.5" of sag that the ones in my '88 K5 currently have and I will just be compounding my issues. I thought a new set of late model springs would, with the shackle flip and a zero rate on stand by would be my best chance for a level vehicle which rides fairly well. What am I missing, other than the possibility they are substandard materials - which I am willing to risk.

Used springs were pretty easy to find (http://car-part.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi), but it seems insane to me to spend the (revised) almost $2K on suspension just to put in used parts.

I will pound on the front end tonight until it comes apart, I really appreciate the help.

Greg they rate those by load, it's hard to detirmine the rate for the mfg because they almost always in oem use a gvw # it's kinda weird I agree..

Personally I'd be looking for a custom spring or have a stock style one built locally if possible you'll be much happier imho.

GWeakland - very cool of you to offer your assistance. I appreciate it.

Sreid - I'm so confused! I'm waiting for Greg to tell me (as he usually does) what I am missing, appreciate the info and recommendation.

So...this is Greg Build 2.0? :dunno:

I title it the "Might As Well do what Greg says" build. :haha: :saweet:

Nice! Nah, I'm just interested in everyone's opinion on stuff like this and it's obvious to me Greg, as well as many others on here, have forgotten more than I will ever know about these things. Funny timing though, I just got off the phone with ORD. I ran the entire situation past him, and, after a few questions about intended use/etc. - he said keep my stock springs. He actually said a lot of times the later model springs make it sit lower in the rear because of the.......uhm....angle or something. So as of right now I intend to keep the stock springs (to start) and go from there.

He also told me about a place here in CA where I can get a running 6L Chevy engine with fuel injection for $3500......I'm going to look into that.
