'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

I'm on their site right now, that's a brand new engine ready to drop in. Includes all the wiring harness and such you need. Really wanted to keep it 'old school', but I'm willing to look into new ideas.

Ready To Run Engine Packages Include:

Palletized Take Out Engine
New Wiring Harness with fully sealed fuse block
Preflashed Computer
All Accessories (i.e. Water Pump, Idler/Tensioner Pulleys, Power Steering Pump, etc.)
All of our engines come with a 1 year limited warranty.

That would be a perfect engine to drop into my '88 in preparation for turning it over to my daughter.

Packages are available as new crate engines or for the budget minded a previously used take out engine.

You are correct. Scratch that one.

Although I find the format (having to page through it on a computer) annoying, I found what I consider to be a good idiot's guide to rebuilding the basics of a Dana 44 front end. Thought it might help someone else in the future. I don't plan to take apart the pumpkin, just the ends, but regardless........Of course if someone knows of a better one, please point me to it. I called a few places today looking for a good manual on the subject and had no luck. The factory service and overhaul manual both have terrible pictures so I find them (due to my lack of knowledge) almost useless.

You guys were not kidding hit it HARD!
Got 5 gallons of the gas out, still half full. I'm going to test it and see if I can just use it. It only sat for about 3-4 months.

To anyone doing this for the first time - don't forget this(below). That is the shaft out of the bottom of the steering box. The bolt must be completely out to get the arm off.

I see a weld on steering brace/frame repair behind your box. That'll save you having to do it...:thumb:

Just run the gas. A few months old isn't going to hurt anything.

Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking.....something I've been able to say often during my life. Ok, just found out my background check is finished for my new job, I expect the formal letter any day (hoping for today). So, I am about ready to start ordering some parts. I did a very thorough look at the rear springs last night, and screw it - I am going to order new rear springs ('72) from RockAuto when I order everything from ORD. I just can't do all of this work and leave in ~45 year old springs. Based on reading other threads, I intend to order Moog where I can.

Here is my shopping list:

Complete 4" lift kit (shackle flip in rear) from ORD
Body mount bushings from ORD
All new brake components
Ball joints
Tie rods
Brake lines
Pumpkin gaskets
wheel bearings

What am I missing? I don't intend to disassemble the differential (I'd never get it back together!)

Bolts and washers for body mount bushings. If you have the square washers for the front two under the radiator, or some guys make them. Also, I think the washers in the back are offset, but I used normal ones. I just purchased most of my hardware for the body mounts at ace and orchard supply hardware.

Or you could buy a whole set from some place that is put together for our 1st gens.

This is an example of the rear mount with the offset star washer.

It's designed to work with a traditional carriage bolt which has a square underside, those "points" help to hold the bolt in place so it doesn't spin. The OEM bolts were actually tack-welded to hold them in place from above so that they could be snugged down properly.

Pretty sure these are the ones I got too, probably a recommendation from Greg...Classic Heartbeat right? Came with all hardware all spelled out individually packaged. That is also the only one that came with the star washer in my kit....

That's the place. But as bp pointed out, it's just a pulled engine. Only reason I even looked into it is because ORD, who I understand to have an outstanding reputation, recommended it. After thinking about it, even if it were a brand new engine, I really want to stay old school.....guess that's why I preferred 1200 psi steam plants and diesel plants in the Navy over the fancy new Gas Turbine push button things.

And to be clear, ORD was not pushing it, he just recommended I look into it.

Woot Woot! Just got my official letter for the new job. Typed up resignation, will submit in the morning ("We like to do these things on Fridays" for Office Space fans), swing by HR to confirm there are no "extra" taxes or any other governmint thievery taken in this situation, and start ordering like a Mutha$er.

Kevin & Jason at Tilden / Pacific Fab are good guys. I've known them for years.... :waytogo:

That being said, I like your attitude about putting an "old school" motor in a 1st Gen. It just "feels right" to me as well. The whole "LS Swaps into everything" movement seems really out of place on our trucks. IMHO there are a LOT of hidden costs in those swaps too.... Not exactly a "budget" option by the time you add up all those receipts! :yikes:
