'72 K5 - Where do I go from here?

Sounds like I'm cutting it.
Had to do a bunch of party prep stuff (I invited about 20 more people than the wife knew about), but I got that ceiling fan relocated. Had to move for lift installation and it was driving me crazy looking at it on my welding table.

little tip for ya...... you shouldn't even have the blaster out yet.. you need to sand, grind and wirewheel EVERY nook and crannie you can get to before even considering breaking the blaster out... a blaster should be the last tool you use for all the areas you can't get to with machine tools, and putting a "fresh" cut over your already sanded/cleaned areas.....

Why is this? I figured blasting was just as good as wire brushing, and it sure seems faster. :dunno:

of course it gives you a VASTLY better surface, gritty.. you're still blasting everything, just removing the bulk with other methods first... a wirewheeled surface actually sucks for priming/painting.. it often "burnishes" the metal, which is NOT what you want..

the reason is to blast the whole thing, thru gunk, thick paint and rust, uses lot's of media/time.. if you hit all the big flat areas with grinders, sanders first, the process goes quicker.... unless of course your using a monster compressor and pro 200+ lb blaster... even with my 40 lb'er, I do the sand/grind, finish with a blaster method...

it's amazing what some nasty 36 to 60 grit on a DA will do...

Not being able to access this site from my home network (I have to use my phone, which is annoying), is driving me insane! Anyway, GWeakland - 12'. I did 12 so I could put in a lift, and because it makes a lot of things easier. If money were no object, I would go 16' so you could build a mezzanine and still be able to use the area under it. However, here in CA anything over 12' gets into all kinds of extra engineering stuff and really drives the cost up logarithmically.

Appreciate all of the cleaning discussion. I had to do a Tractor Supply run to get some more wheels and blasting material. While there I picked up another blasting gun (type you just put the hose in the bag) so I didn't have to refill the gun every 3 minutes. Worked great, for about a minute - then it.....stopped working. I don't have a water remover thing on on my air system, so that could be the problem. I am using everything I can to get it clean. Angle grinders, scrapers, flat head screwdrivers, wire brushes, power washer, blaster - anything and everything.

When I was doing all of my VA stuff to retire from the military I had a doctor, looking at an MRI of my back, say, "I am surprised you can walk." Now this is the same hospital which told me I had Stage IV cancer, and took 4 months to tell me I did not, so......Anyway, I have some pretty serious injuries in my past. Every now and then my back acts up.....usually when I overdo it with deadlifts. Last Friday I worked out with this dude who I have a bit of a competitive thing going with......we did (among other things) deadlifts. I felt it all day yesterday but kept telling myself 'man up cupcake.' Well about an hour after I got back from TSC I am bent over using that 7" angle grinder and bam - I thought I had been shot in the back. I dropped the angle grinder and went to the ground. Wife gave me some good muscle relaxers, I drank those down with 'a few' Silver Bullets, and with the help of wife and daughter got the frame back in the shop, blew everything down, and closed up for the weekend. It'll last a few days and I'll be fine. Tonight I am just going to do some easy stuff with the 4" angle grinder and see how I feel. Sucks getting old!

Just take it slow.

Mark off 12" sections of the frame with blue painters tape if necessary, and work on one section per day (or do one in the AM, one in the PM)... The inside framerail cleaning is a much bigger PITA than the outside, especially with all the crossmembers and brackets still riveted in there.... I'd do the insides FIRST then work on the much easier outside framerail area as the "reward" since it is so much easier to reach.

It might feel frustrating to only work a couple feet per day, but it's still better than trying for a "hero day" of progress and ending up injured for a couple of weeks where you can't even move....

Those fiber-loop wheels are really nice for cleaning metal too.... just don't jam them into sharp corners where they will easily shred. They move and clean the more open areas in a hurry though and if you don't lean on them too hard and get them hot they can remove undercoating pretty effectively as well.

So when your phone is on wifi at home it doesnt work, but on 4g it will? Or is it just another specific computer/tablet? Have you tried different browsers? It's a pain, but did you try resetting your wifi router software back to stock? I would be going crazy if I had your computer issue. I know you didn't explicitly ask for help so just disregard this if you'd rather stay on topic.

Thanks Greg, that's good advice. I tend to get a little.....'I want it done, I want it done, I want it done' when I have a project of any type going on. I am determined to not be the guy who tears it apart and never finishes it. Hell, I already have quite the list of things that need to be fixed on the C20 and the '88 K5.......and other builds waiting.....etc. It will never end. I'll check out those fiber-loop wheels, I have not tried them. I do use a lot of flap disks, and they work well on flat surfaces that are not greasy.

Jacob, No worries about jumping around on my end, if that's like a forum rule or something......guess I'll find out, but I doubt it - this place seems uber laid back, which I like. I actually called my ISP today and told him I was willing to pay for a service call if his guys would come out and figure out WTF is going on. I live pretty remote, outside of Ramona, and hell, Ramona itself is thought of as 'That little Redneck town" by those who live 'down the hill'(in San Diego). Because we are so far out, we can't get any wired ISP - we have to use a local place that serves our 'backcountry' community. They literally have 1300 customers......pretty cool in my book. I called the owner earlier and told him I still can't access......he checks out my 'sector' and.......he can't get to the site from my sector (5) either. 1-4 and 6-10 no problem, 5 won't access it. He's trying to figure out what is going on and said he would let me know when it is fixed. The things that only happen to me.......cause I have such great luck I guess.

Yeah. No worries on the forum rules. You can do just about anything except for mistreating one of the members. :)

The people here shaped the site over the last 15+ years. There used to be rules, but we pretty much forgot them all, and enforcing the ones we could remember was too much like work. The end result is what we have now, and it works...:dunno:
