That's a shortbed so if you are willing to change the framelength and do the fabwork it would be pretty awesome. What year is that?

get it, get it get it get it get it get it....

04 it says. By the way dave I have an extra hand held tuner if you do by that truck! Just saying.

looks like 01-02 front though thought they changed the front end on 03

They did Jess, 03 had the slant eyes....sounds like a cool option though eh?

I would probably look for a 03-06 crew though....so many cool thoughts...then I would only need another 15K to get this done.

Reality check....I just gotta be careful I don't get in over my head, and also to make sure I can have this done in about 9 months, starting next fall....I plan on using it to pull the Maiden to BB in 2013!

dont forget the little trips to bundy, and silver lake. We have to wheel bundy this year in a c/k no jeepsters

What if you made a 76 shortbed dually on that frame? Would that be awesome or look funny with a shortbed dually? Any photo choppers want to show us? Daves 76 as a shortbed?

Keep in mind, in 06 the Dmaxs got the 6 speed allison with a .62? OD gear, not totally necessary though.

Yes but they also got DPF too and better heads and serviceable injectors...

look for the LBZ option code if you get an 06, has a better tune from factory.

LBZ numbers stock

LBZ (Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD / 3500 Classic (auto trans), GMC Sierra 2500HD / 3500 Classic (auto trans)) 2006–2007 360 bhp (270 kW) @3200 650 lb·ft (881 N·m) @1600

Put a tune on there dave and you will never drive a non diesel to pull

Keep in mind, Stock tunes mean nothing with efi live on the market, which is availiable for cummins as well. Get the engine you want, use efi to tune it up, shut off the Dpf and egr, and let 'er eat.

I thought this would suck, but that actually looks good.

And Luke, school me a little more on the EFI tune your talking about. Is that typically like a gas engine tune then?

Dave its what I run in my dmax. EFI live is pricey but limitless on the tuning options. You have to buy the flashscan tool software for your pc and you can load custom tunes that you create. Or run tunes other people help you create bassed on your logged data.

Efi live is the software trade name, for sure it started out for gm gasspots. But it is now, in my oppinion, the best diesel tuning software availiable on the market right now. For newer cummins and all duramaxes.

All canned tuners fuel maps were/are very harsh. And those were things that were never visible to Joe public before efi live, now you can smooth those fueling maps out. Such better tunes.

I would also strongly suggest you do not dabble in it. If your not experienced with it. You can kill your engine with it as well. Find an experienced tuner in your area get a tune loaded up that has what you want. And call it a day. You don't have to buy a copy of efi live if you don't want to. If you're not going to get into serious tuning, not really nessisary to buy it. Load a tune get gauges, and drive the nuts off it.

Id still say a 12v in it, would be better.

There is one option that you did not think about.

A newer 6.5 optimizer with a banks turbo.

I think overall it might be a more expensive and less power than a cummins but it would bolt in, and bolt to the turbo 400, so overall cost might be on par

Gus is the man to talk to about what kind of power these can make. I don't really recollect.

It certainly isn't on the same power level as the Cummins but the power level is on par with a big block.

I think the Dmax allison swap would be bitchen but in 9 months I think it would make the work you did on the maiden seem like a quick fix.

I have seriously thought about the 6.5 swap with a banks on it ( so it fits with all the stock equipment).

But the lure of the power of a cummins is strong. Of course I don't mind rowing gears so when I swap its a 4500 or a 5600

Jess, Luke, thanks for the schooling on that tuner.
Eric, bolt in would be sweet, I figure 550(gross) I make with the Maiden would be a sweet engine in BART also...but for sure mpg would suffer....so if I'm going oilburner its gotta be at least 600 gross.

Got playing around with this too:

http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/savemoney.shtml

Best case scenario:

454 gets 7.5mpg
diesel gets 15mpg
gas @ 3.25 diesel @ 4.00
driving 5000mi/yr would save me $4200/over 5 years

Realistically:

454 getting 6.5
diesel getting 12
same price for fuel
driving 2500mi/yr would save me 2500/5yrs.

So a payback in 5 years would be my goal if going anything other than current drivetrain.
cost analysis would say a reasonable 454 @ $5K for a rebuild and a few upgrades, and a gear vendors overdrive unit, and freshen up the T400. Might be able to pull 7.5 with that combo. Lets call that the baseline.

Cummins swap realistically...Luke what do you have for an estimate to get the engine (@600tq gross) in and completely functional, comparitively to the 454....not including the rest of the drivetrain?

I thought this would suck, but that actually looks good.

I agree, I thought the bed would be too short with the dually fenders but it looks just fine. Does that put it at the right length for that dmax frame?

I know you didn't ask me but having just done this:

Cost of motor ($1500-2000?)
Cost of crossmember/motor mounts ($500?)
Intercooler, 94-02 Dodge $200-300
Intercooler plumbing ~$100
Exhaust $300
Fuel pin and governor spring (since you want more power) ~$130
Odds and ends like belt, wiring, etc ~$300?

Really the motor goes in super easy, I think I had mine in the truck the first day I had the parts. It just barely fits between the firewall and diesel radiator but neither needed to be changed.

Here in CO there is no comparison between a turbo diesel and any big block, at altitude the NA motors aren't too good. I'm sure they're better closer to sea level.

Not sure I'd want a TH400 behind a Cummins though

personally, I would buy a donor truck. 2wd. use everything you need out of it. you will pay too much if you try to source everything separately. the last 2 P-pump donor trucks I personally bought I paid $1500 or less. for complete trucks. one was a beat ranch truck, one was in a rear ender. thats what i've done a couple times. both were Ppump trucks. one was a nv4500 one was 47rh. one 2wd one 4wd.
