:haha::haha::haha:, I just want to put it down while I'm thinking about it, want to get all the stuff covered I can think of, including tow rig and trailer....I find I'm more thorough if I write it down on something.

Thats what I was thinking... hope you got time.

You can do it man!

GOOD LUCK!

I'll get the trans and brakes done then its balls to the wall man!
to get the rest of the stuff done...12-16 hr days the next 5 days!

So while putting the new reaction carrier in, it is a different design than what was in there, and requires a spacer to lift the roller clutch up to where the center support can engage it...other wise the reaction carrier can spin in both directions...which its not supposed to....another hurdle, trying to locate one now.:dunno:

Dave, I'll probably be pulling my tranny out of my regal this weekend if you want a backup plan. Known good TH400, it's a 2WD case though. Was built by Hipster before I learned how to do it. It is the thick case, but not the 4WD case.

Or another option is I have the low roller clutch out of my 4L80E that has standoffs built into it, will that fit?

If you have a local trans shop look for a low roller clutch out of a 2000 model 4L80E and see what I mean.

very cool offer Heath....check it out. I went to see a trans shop about 20mi away, so he could see what I was lamely trying to explain to him, and by the time I got there he had one waiting on the counter....so yeah a 4L80 unit will work. I was ready to build a spacer to put under this roller clutch to raise it up enough to engage the center support race.

The old roller clutch on the right, the newer style on the left:

The old style reaction carrier (70's's era, but also shared with 4L80's) notice the flat bottom and sides, this unit requires a spacer (which is hard to find but was factory in some models) to keep the roller clutch up to engage the center support.

The newer (or maybe older, 80's era) notice the beveled side/bottom that keeps the roller clutch up higher in the drum, making contact with the center support race.

The old reaction carrier surface (where the band has to grab) This isn't too bad to be used in a car, where light loads are encountered in reverse, but for offroading he suggested it be replaced, and thus started the seek and find mission of today.....

The trans is bolted to the engine once again

Heath, I'll keep your trans in mind if needed....I thought about pulling the one out of the Vette if I need it too.....but would have to tear down and replace the output to match the 203 doubler setup.
Lets just hope this one works this time.

Grabbing some dinner right now, then headed out to get the doubler put in. Hopefully a test drive yet tonight.

Every now and then you need an EPIC thrash getting ready to truly enjoy the Moab experience.

Congrats you have achieved that status! But you're getting close :)

Good progress update Zim. It'll work this time, I can feel it.

:saweet: Balls to the wall..man!!

Nice! That takes me back.:haha:

Hope that trans works out.

Thanks guys, I want this so bad, I got the transfer cases back in tonight, and I'm fried for the day....gotta hook up shifters, driveshafts, fill fluids, and a few other things then try another test run....

Kert, I'll call ya tomorrow with an update!

Sounds good Dave. Get some rest!

Dang Dave wish I was closer. I would be over every night.

I am very excited to see the maiden.

Glad it worked Dave, I thought that might fix your problem, but wasn't sure if there was a "3rd" version or if it was the same. A replacement roller clutch is a lot more common than an extra spacer. I just replaced one of those last weekend so it was fresh on my mind. The old one was fine, but I replace it anyway since the springs wear out and I don't exactly like removing transmissions to replace $20 parts.

Eric only a week from being there now. :woot:
Heath I hate taking that trans out for any reason now.:doah:

I hear you, I had to remove mine twice because of that faulty direct drum sprag race. :angry1:

Wow man.bad luck there.at least it happened on the shakedown and not on the trail.looks like you got some stronger parts this time around.that should help.

Look familiar?

Like I didn't have enough time to do this once already....same stuff with this trans...something is getting past everybody, so I'm headed to Coan Engineering in the AM to have them rebuild this unit while I'm there....they don't have a 4x4 unit in stock, but can go through this one to find out what's wrong with it....same slushy 2-3 shift, and mushy reverse....

I may be down, but not out....stay tuned!

When are you dragging the whole truck there to save time on the back and forth?
