after talking with Kert this AM...he had the idea to mount the tank to the chassis framerails...this would put the mounting flanges for the tank in the middle of the tank, the length of each side, giving greater strength from front to back of the tank, and will allow gussets to be added to the tank flange as well as the frame flanges, also will allow the tank to come out from the top with the removable floor. The fuel pump will be relocated to allow the tank to be centered in between the framerails as well, giving about 1.5" of side clearance between the tank and the frame. This should work out great, glad I got Kert opinion on this...experience counts!

Relocated the floor support framing, had to scallop around the body mount in the rear tailpan, but it turned out pretty good I think.

The shot of the tank will be where the mounting flange will be (with gussets) and the frame shot is from the drivers side wheelwell opening looking to the pass side frame where the flange will be mounted.

updated mounting drawing:

With this method the floor will be solid from seats to fenderwells to rear tailpan.
Only opening will be a 6" sq. fuel filler door recessed into the floor.

well I started with the above idea, and ended up with this configuration, thanks to Kert....
The aluminum angle welded to the tank sides will be 24" same as the tank.
The steel angle welded to the frame, will be 24" same as the tank.
Both angle pieces will have gussets welded to them for strength.

awesome... don't forget some gussets.. with that length, I would probably do 3 per side.. each end, and one in the middle..

Gussets...definitely, Kert has that in the plan...can't wait to get building this tank (well, watching Kert anyway)....it should be cool seeing all the parts come together finally.

thanks Dean, I made a weld the other day and forgot to turn the gas on....I looked at it and thought, that's how I used to weld with flux core...:eek1: :haha::haha::haha:
Rene' and Eric (and many others) told me a couple years ago to just keep pulling the trigger, it'll get better, and it has for the most part!

sorry, missed your parentheses... :doah: :o didn't mean to repeat myself... I've just seen fatigue failures like that on certain boat tanks and wanted to make sure you have no issues...

sorry, i missed it, but are you guys going stainless?

I'll say... your welds look good and I like the Frenching work on the mounts! :waytogo:

haha, I put them in place, tacked them square, then thought why don't I close that hole up....glad it dawned on me to do so, I like more better now!

I can use the reminders, at my age they come in handy!
I'm confident in Kert's stuff, you know how stout he builds things, I certainly don't want to have a problem either, especially in the fuel dept...leaking fuel scares me to death!
We're using Aluminum, I think Kert said like .120? as he was figuring things out for the layout today.

I"m not transporting dynamite, or is it M110's...you got a license for it?

I got a buddy that used to make all his own "firecrackers"....they were about 1.5" diameter and about 3" long....you did not want to be any where close to those when they went off....the concussion was awesome and the smoke was a cloud.

He hasn't been able to get stuff since 9/11 happened.

most excellent, I got the floorpan template done, will work on the battery mounting tomorrow!

hahaha, thats a funny movie, those guys played it well!

Woodchk502 stopped by today to drop off a 70 GMC front end that we scored for $50 + alot of leg work by Jim....he picked it up, hauled it up to me, and I'm taking the front headlights/trim and grille from it for the Pool room, and he's taking the rest....some decent original parts to work with, or have for spares if he needs them!
$50 seemed like a steal from C/L.
Jim has a really sweet Duramax too!

Got a battery plate partially made today, will refine it and weld it in tomorrow. The orange area will be cut off. This plate will support a battery tray we'll make up at DIY4X this weekend.
