I agree with the others Dave, I am thinking something funny in the pinion

Here is the original straddle (rear most) bearing on the left for this housing...Looks like it may be missing some of the bearing in the earlier pics, there is too much of the pinion end that has no bearing on it...so where did all of the rollers go? I dont see how they could get through the carrier bearings and down a tube?

Is this rust on the edge of the bearing.

I didn't think about getting past the bearings . Just knew the tubes on mine were full of crap and assumed they could get in there too.

Where was that floating at? That almost looks like Detroit internals. Might oughta send that pic to Eric...
the Detroit looks/acts ok from a visual.

Yes, that is the original, it was replaced when the axle was built. Hard to find

Seems like it would raise hell with the carrier bearings if that was the case.

The last picture with the ring gear in it...

There appears to be three or four teeth that look damaged too...maybe even another piece of bearing shaving mashed into the last tooth...???

Looking at the service manual, and further and closer inspection, it looks like the only part of the pinion straddle bearing left is the outer part of the bearing housing, no rollers or front part of the housing in place. Front pinion support coming out tomorrow. Maybe the rollers are up in the pinion support?

ill look closer at that Frank...it does look like they did some metal mashing!

I think there is a oil channel in behind the pinion support.....you may find all of the bearing pieces in there....

need to look the ring gear and pinion over with a bright light...if the teeth have minimum damage, you can dress them with a dremmel and fine stone... I've seen worse and dressed them up with a file and a stone and they worked fine...:waytogo:

Yes I’d bet a Pepsi on that one

The original rear end in Smokey did this, I just cleaned out the debris and popped another bearing in and ran it . 400,000+ miles on the rear end when I found it like that . Put it back together and ran it for 2 more years on the street before I replaced that rear with a AAM 14 bolt from a Dodge .

I still have that original rear end laying around and wouldn’t hesitate to use it some more if needed

The one from my bee threw a few pieces up in that lube channel to the pinion and they got to the bearings.... Which is why I had to open it in the first place lol

So that little bearing has, best I can estimate, 18 rollers in it....I can only find 13. Two were laying right under the fill plug, and the other 11 were in the pinion housing raising hell with the bearings in there. Amazing all of that got thrown up through the oil feed passage and into the pinion. There is shrapnel everywhere and sludgy glittery paste settled in the tubes, beside the adjusters. So out all of it came. I dont have a press, and Im leaving for Florida on Wed to bring my Mom home, so Ill be gone for 8-9 days. Im going to try and drop off the pinion assembly to the driveline shop (they built my D60) and have them rebuild it while Im gone. Three new bearings, crush sleeve, and seal. All I hope to have to do is put the little bearing in the housing, and check the gear pattern again.
I pulled the carrier out and disassembled it, everything inside the DEEtroit looked fine. The ring and pinion look fine, the side bearings look and feel fine, so I cleaned out all the sludge, cleaned the innards with brake cleaner, and its going back together. I will also pull the spindles apart to check things out, but the fluid coming out looked good.

Don't you like the two steps forward one step back nature of projects? Way better to find it in the home shop than 2000 miles away in Moab working in a dirt lot at the campground.

actually, Im thankful that was my biggest issue in 2011...
But yeah, this would suck in the parking lot....to get the pinion housing off, the truss/traction bar system has to come apart as well...thats fun! Glad I decided to change the diff lube!

Damn

I guess 14 BFF means bearing fully focked

at least it didn't blow like a gov bomb!

You’re right Dean...there was so many fine metal bits in that sludge, and some bigger pieces too. Im sure the pinion bearings are trashed, as it seems most of the disintegrated bearing ended up being fed right into that pinion housing. the Detroit all looked good, and no metal bits inside of the carrier at all.
Still need to check the outer axle bearings, although it looked good from pulling the axles out. The lube was clean and non glittery.

Ive been chasing what seemed to me like a “bearing rattle”...that I thought was in the doubler. I replaced a couple bearings in the 205, but it didn't go away, could it be possible that those rollers floating around in the pinion housing were transmitting sound up to the doubler?

I’m betting it was!

Totally different but not. My Duramax was making some funky noises that I couldn’t figure out for a few weeks. Was the drivers front unit bearing... transmitted all kinds of weird noises that I didn’t think was from the front hub.
