Ruffstuff Goodies

This might sounds weird coming from me.....but I really enjoy what is going on with this build. :waytogo:

I like the way you are systematically swapping out worn/weak components and marching toward a solid, reliable truck. If you can avoid the temptation cut chop the fenders and install huge tires....you'll be perfect.

I like the air-cooled 911 in the garage too. Looks like maybe a 3.0 liter '78-83 maybe?

Thanks guys.

My intention is to keep this rig street worthy so I can enjoy some trips up in the sierras without the necessity of a tow rig. We have our annual man trip in six weeks so I'm motivated to get this pig trail ready.

Greg, yes it's a 78 sc 3.0. Unfortunately I hit a deer last month and the insurance deemed it a total loss. I bought the car back but I'm unsure wether I'll fix it or part it out. Either way I'll have another air cooled Porsche, I just enjoy them too much.

One of the first priorities right now is to remove the 203 is currently leaking and sounds like it's ready to blow up any minute. I picked up a 27 spline 1973 NP205 that has a 10 spline front output. The driveshafts I bought are setup for flanges so I bought a 30 spline front output and flange along with a 32 spline rear output flange.

Here is a pic of the 32 spline rear flange installed with a new seal.

Then I removed the front output shaft, here it is next to the 30 spline shaft I picked up with the flange slid on.

This snap ring was a little bitch....after bending a couple pairs of the normal snap ring pliers I had to go find some beefier pliers. Still wasn't easy, had to get the wife involved

put it all back together with some new seals and shot some paint on it

I'm waiting on the adapters seals, those should be here tomorrow and I bought an HF transmission jack so I don't kill myself.

Another priority is the cooling system which I knew hadn't been touched in over 15 years and it was starting to get hot at idle. I knew of a leak in the 4 core radiator, the fan shroud was from who knows what and all the hoses were ready blow.

crusty....

I probably should have pressured washed the engine before getting into this.

I also have a pair of electric fans off a late model 8.1L chevy truck that will be controlled by the BMW dual thermostat switch.

This waterneck has 3/8" and 1/2" ports, I'll use the 3/8" port with a modified 3/8 to 1/8 reducer fitting. Autozone had this in stock for $8.

I'm waiting on the upper radiator hose and the water pump shims

I also put some paint on the ruffstuff parts and ORD brace.

Looking good there! Love watching this build here. Mind me asking what type of paint you used to paint covers etc? Brandon

So may be too late, however Windstar fans are just about a direct fit to that radiator.

I only say that because, other then they are, I am just not sure how the 8.1 fans fit.

Definitely liking the build keep it up man!

I bought the 8.1 fans (and a bunch of other parts) from a guy with a k5 crawler. In fact the 4 row radiator I just had flushed and tested came from him as well so it should fit fine. I was going the windstar route until I ran into all these parts he had for sale.

I'll have more updates once the engine is back together and I can test the cooling system. My goal is to finish that project before ripping into the axle swap, crossover and transfer case swap.

Had a little time this afternoon so I installed the spartan locker in the D60. Pretty easy to install once I found a long enough punch to knock the roll pin out.

Also had a chance to install the radiator and most of the hoses. In the process I found out that my radiator is one if the taller radiators so I need the matching top mounts. The m14x1.5 tap will be here Tuesday for the BMW fan switch that is going in the water neck.

Oh and the fans don't fit, too deep so I'll just grab some windstars this week.

I've been plugging away at a few things however my time availability has been limited between work, vacation and other family priorities.

I finally received the M14x1.5 tap so the BMW fan switch is now installed on the water neck. Also have the relays, fuse holders, wire, connectors etc, just need to go grab the fans and the cooling system is done.

The plan originally was to use the WFO Hi-Steer arms and tie rod setup that I bought used however it's looking like I'll have some clearance issues with the oil pan and the shocks need to be moved so I bought a WFO springless crossover arm and top plate along with new king pin bushings.

Also bought spring plate studs, 4 degree shims for the front and koozies

First of next week the 203/205 swap is the priority so I can measure for the rear driveshaft and get that built. Then I'll slide the D60 under the front with the new leaf springs. I have 3 weeks to get this rig trail ready and I'm gone for a full week for work :doah:

That was the only thing that I fought on my install of the spartan too. Once you get that out, it literally took me about 20 min to install :waytogo:

IIRC I ended up using a 3/16" x 6" threaded rod as my "punch".

Finished up the windstar electric fans
