I just read thru your whole build. It looks great and is how I want my truck to be setup and look. The only difference is I got a 305 so I'm about to ls swap it. Good work keep it up

Thanks :D

And you'll notice I'm not upgrading the 454, that's for a reason. An 8.1 swap has always been my plan.

Had a couple hours of free time Sunday evening after my daughters recital, one thing led to another :hack:

just need to remove the shift linkage and it's ready to come out :saweet:

Yes it drips coolant (very slowly) off the starter so I have a freeze plug kit for it. I'll pickup a gasket set and replace most of the gaskets while I have it out and hit it with some Chevy orange.

Ugliest 3 barrel carb ever on that there!

No, but the plating is nice and shiny!

Any more prep on the new frame?

Been stripping it down with wire/abrasive wheels and hitting it with primer as I go. I damn near started my trailer on fire with the plasma so I'm waiting to get the frame moved out front for the rear hangers. Good news is the surface rust comes off really quick so it hasn't been too bad.

few updates from yesterday afternoon with some interesting finds

had to remove the headers and unbolt the engine mounts from the crossmember to get this pig out, tight valve cover to master cylinder with those eddie tall covers on the motor.

As I mentioned earlier, here are some pics of the questionable repairs made right behind the PS box.

and one of the typical cracks on the engine crossmember

Wow, guess it's been a while since I've seen that "repair". Looks like the welds are under the plate lol.

Glad to see that frame go!

I wanted to hit the like button, but not approve of the stuff that's "questionable"

:frown1:

onto some of the interesting stuff.

I found that both of the poly engine mounts were tore which had under a 1K miles on them.
This all makes sense with the loose/snapped transmission mount that happened on the rubicon last year. When I pulled the distributor cap off to note the rotor position @ TDC I found this

along with a clear rub mark on the diesel firewall mat

We had this 3-4 foot step up we hit last year (had to bump it) on the trail and the truck died. Had @bmxbryant9 throw me a strap and pull me up and we thought it was the carb. Now I'm thinking it was this....

oh and did I mention my crank pulley bolt was loose? Took 3+ revolutions for it to get tight enough to rotate the engine.

and onto the engine.

All in all the heads look pretty clean inside so that was good to see. I really didn't want to pull the heads going into this....

Peanut ports the interwebs say
IMG_0684sm_zpscwakgku9.jpg

Does this mean they're 79 heads? This would make sense because the 850 Qjet I have on this motor is also a 1979

and here are the block numbers

Looks good. Are you going to pull the heads?

I highly recommend the summit freeze plugs. $14 and there way thicker than the old ones.

I'm leaving the heads. Pulling the manifold, pan and timing chain cover for a reseal. I already have the summit plugs, bought them a couple months ago. There's an edelbrock manifold for sale on CL for $100 that I might go grab.
