89 K5 - "Butch" Build Thread #K54FUN

And... I dug this crusty beast out from under my trailer this past weekend. Gonna have an Elocker, high steer, SRW conversion, Reid knuckles, PSC hydro assist and Yukon spindles, CM axles and gears... should look different in a few weeks.

You can’t see it well but thanks to the DIY4X jack axel stand, this beast was easy to move around by myself...

Nice build! updates?
Hi all, thanks for the continued support/feedback. I've got to get posting on the latest updates. The "tons" are going in. On jack stands right now (again, I'm "that" neighbor!)
Deaver Spring upgrade...
ORD Engine Mounts/Cross Member install
Dana 60 Build
14b FF Build...
I'm heading to Colorado in a few weeks for vacation, unfortunately the K5 won't be ready for the trip, but I'll get caught up on posts.

A couple update pics after the one ton build completion. Extremely happy with the upgrade and how my YouTube certification has panned out with this build! (haha) all the goodies have been detailed in build profile adding this 2.5 year one ton project (collection of parts to on the road.)

I really need to sit down and show some stuff!!! Here's a link to Merrick's Garage where he did a walk around on my rig, just before we went on John Bull and Holcomb Creek that day (where I sheared the PS pulley off my rig...) :(

Carl
I watched both videos last week. Having seen yours in this thread it was cool to watch it on the trail. Great work all around.

While 2020 has really sucked butt most for most things, I sat and realized it's not been all that bad. I've checked off three bucket list items this year alone, getting ready to check off another...
1. Drive a Porsche GT3 on a race track - done for my birthday, thanks to my beautiful bride Judy
2. Do the hard stuff in Big Bear! John Bull and Holcomb Creek - my axle swap last year set this in motion!
3. Go on the Rubicon Trail - Done, thanks to an invite by Esteban Solano, James Merrick and Chris Kucherer (see video below!)

I'm off to Pueblo area in August to visit mom for a month, going to Buena Vista and bringing the K5 this year! Looking forward to some trails up there.

#4 bucket list - taking my mom with me home and stopping in Moab at FSI on the way home! I can't wait.

I hope all are well. Hopefully I'll get bored and post up some progress pics on the K5 build. For now, I'm just using and abusing the rig.

If you are going to be in Pueblo hit me up. I'd love to see the K5 of yours in person. I'd go wheeling with you but mine is under the knife and will be going together by the time you get up here.

I'll be visiting Pueblo West for a month, about a mile or so from Larry's house! Would love to meet up and if it works out, can help wrench for a day. Was hoping to hit the trail one day with you guys!

Between Larry's broke frame and my incomplete swap we won't be hitting trails soon. I'd like to be but we are taking our time on mine then the frame goes under the knife.

Wow, I can't believe it's been ~18 months since posting. Since the last post, we had two awesome trips to Moab with Full-Size Invasion, visited Sand Hollow for the first time, Wheeled all over the Buena Vista area, and I am planning to make Blazer Bash this year as it doesn't conflict with the family trip to Buena Vista, for once.

Build updates: not many updates, but have been wheeling this guy and having fun. I did modify the DIY4X rear bumper for sliders and add some quarter panel armor from Woods Offroad in San Marcos, CA. Those are specifically added due to The Pickle trail damage and proved useful the second time I went on the trail. :) I made my own sliders that are now frame-mounted, some reinforcing is still needed. Oh, and I upgraded to 37s and some nice Dirty Life bead locks I got off an Ultra4 car.

For 2022:
  • Looking forward to FSI in Sand Hollow, UT - April
  • My 2003 Suburban 2500 4WD will be robbed of its driveline for a swap to the K5 - the Sub carcas and 32 spline transfer case will be for sale. Also, my 241C with ORD SYE will be for sale too.
    • LQ4 6.0l/4l80e combo. Top-end has been warmed over (20K mi ago) with upgraded cam, valves, lifters, springs and pushrods
    • Magnum 205 on order (can't wait!)
    • DIY4X dash and new gauges
    • 2010+ Camaro SS water pump swap for a driver-side block exit (Dirty Dingo idler relocation bracket)
  • Hopefully, running and stable to attend Blazer Bash in September!
  • Buena Vista, mid-Sept.
  • Pueblo West until mid-October
  • who knows what else!
I'm looking for an oil pan that can be used with the ORD small block cross member as Tilden Motorsports is no longer. Anyone who has an oil pan they've used with the ORD small block and LS family of motors (low profile), details would be greatly appreciated. Some options are out there but would love to hear specifics, pros/cons, from anyone.

Be well!

Hey Carl! All those updates and no pics makes us sad. Lol.

But the plan sounds awesome! Going to make BB a plan so we can finally hit some dirt together.

As far as the LS pan question. I used the stock 5.3 truck pan when we had the LS in there. I was still running the stock engine cross member though. It cleared but there was a little bib on the front of the block that missed the cross member that required a little filing. So it don’t answer your specific question with a ORD small block cross member. But it does show the truck pan (which is the same between 5.3 and 6.0) can clear a stock setup. As long as the ORD does not tuck higher than the stock one it should work.

Sorry Rob, pics are always on the phone. Here are some of the good ones that you’ve seen on the gram, but not in here.

Maybe I've been living under a rock but why did Tilden close up shop?
I think it may have morphed into Pacific Fabrication and/or Kevin went into Ultra4 racing... not sure exactly sure. From the internet stalking I did to figure out why Tilden didn't have pans on the market anymore, that seemed to be the case.

I LOVE those Wood's Off Road corner guards, I plan on getting a pair at some point.

What kind of voodoo magic are you doing to roll up the side walls of the soft top so tightly? Makes it look super clean!

Hey there. First weekend of December annual trip now. We spend the night at the Avi Casino and start Friday morning. Spun some slots on the site and went to bed. Go to Razor road or all the way. Put it on the calendar!
Were you on the road this year?
