'90 K5 'Barney'

Even at 9.5:1 your not close to pinging territory. The heads you had picked out are going to yield better number then the vortec heads.
Go aluminum, just find a slightly cheaper set.

How much are you going to to drive it?
Do you want to have fun when you do?
You can get 400hp out of vortec heads but it's not as easy.

Yeah I realize now I’m not close to pinging. I started thinking about these today because of the low numbers, looking at the blue print engines they have one advertised at 9:1 compression with Vortec heads so it started my little marble rolling around in my head.

So sticking with my previously mentioned aluminum heads that flow better and at the 9:1 compression ration how much am I losing? Is it enough to justify swapping pistons?

I never read your thread, I just popped in here and started tossing out my opinion. So ask, whats your intended use when done?

Daily driver, mostly on road, maybe a little off road. Looking to see some improvment over stock when I smash the skinny pedal.

Probably some Edelbrock E streets like @6872xtc
Best quality vs price. I believe 64 cc and 180 on the ports

I would just make the pistons you have work. See if you can find some cheaper heads that will bump your compression up to 9+

Don't over think it. If your 385hp vs 400 you won't feel it. That said.
I would still shoot higher so if it does make what you want your still in a fun zone. For me the actual fun zone starts at 400.. even though my crap currently doesn't make that.....

I used Edelbrock E-street heads, #5089.
64cc, old style heads. I needed new pushrods, I got new head bolts which helped since they came with washers, and I had to get new headers since the ports were larger, I didn't have any manifolds that would work.

In my quick search I made I didn’t see anything smaller than 64cc pop up for 350’s.

I like the idea of running what I have. I hate the idea of selling it and taking a loss.

9.0:1 w/ a good cam on a 383 will be more than adequate...

Stop over thinking this and realize that a good street engine makes power between 1500 and 5500.

The more torque you have at 1500 to 3500 the better, and you aren't going to spend but a fraction of your time above that anyway...

:haha:

That all depends on how you drive....

This is so true! That’s why I never get any kinda fuel mileage regardless what I drive.

One step closer to working on Barney, finished filling, laid barrier and rebar, it’s a lot of work when it’s just you and one other guy! Hopefully gonna pour concrete next weekend! :woot:

If possible, keep that slab warm and wet for a couple weeks...

It’s inside, and I can keep water on it! I hadn’t thought about watering it.

Sucky thing is waiting! I want to stay off it for two weeks but it’s hard!

You shouldn't have to wait that long, if it's good concrete. A week should be plenty for just a square body truck. This is assuming that you used a 5.5 to 6 bag mix.

It’s supposed to be good stuff, concrete truck brought it in. I don’t remember what it was now.

Nice! I haven’t seen those before. How do you like them, do you know what kind of power you’re making with them? I think I take runners are a little small for the 383 though.
