I have a few questions on that awesome work you just did with the body. When tack welding all of that together, what kinda wire are you using? Just a mig welder w/ gas, but what size wire? .023? Once you get done with all those tac welding, what is the next step? grind it down the lay some mud across it? amazing work
 
I don't know about Rene's method of choice, but I would grind the spots flush, then two probably two more rounds of spot welds before sealing the panel with some two stage epoxy or similar sealer. The goal with the sealer is to make sure that there is no more light showing through the panel anywhere, and if it is, making sure that the bare metal that is still showing is coated. Sharp edges promote corrosion, as does metal that has been heat stressed.

I'd then scuff up the epoxy sealant and do what little bondo work is required to fill in the rest of the imperfections in the sealant, top that with some two stage urethane filler primer and finally paint.
 
Rene, good to see that you got yourself another project. I have not been around for a while and just seen this. Good luck on it! I just started working on mine again. Didn't choose a perfect time to do it since I just had ACL reconstruction but now is better than never.

I ran a couple more laps around the seams, now have a tack about every half inch or less everywhere. Next step is grind down the tacks flush, and play with some mud. I'm using .023 with 75/25 shield...I like to set the machine as if I was going to be welding 1/8" plate. That gives you the ability to zap in a very fast, but very hot tack. Good penetration without a huge heat affected zone.

i'm no pro with the mud, but I get by. The more I use it the better I get and the I'm a lot happier with the results than anytime in the past.

Right now it's "good from far, and far from good..." the primer makes it a lot more photogenic than it deserves to be. It is fine for now, allowing me to move on to the rockers and floor and the section you can see behind the door.

Then it's the '74 GMC front clip...and this grill:

Still trying to find a '73-'78 hood near me that's in decent shape, and nearly free. :haha:

Too bad your 3000 miles away,I have a '73 Chevy hood,but it does need patching in the front where they always rot,but its not too bad,and at least its not folded in half like most of those years were!..

I also have the grille off the same truck with the "350" badge,,and the one off my '74 GMC I junked too,with a "454" badge..both have a tooth or two missing from plow hoses being routed thru them,but after seeing what one sells for on E-bay,I figured it wont cost much to hang them on a nail in the garage!..

I have a nice '74 hood, Rene, but I really don't think it'd be worth the money to get it there.:doah:
Nice work, Rene. The primered parts look good. Too bad about the rest of the Blazer.:haha:

I snag those 73-74 grilles every chance I get!! ( although i've yet to use one ) its a Shame the Aftermarket doesn't repro them
 
Started on the passenger side floor area. Mostly not too terrible, a few cracks which is typical, and the seat belt anchor area was pretty much gone. The rocker was almost completely gone. Looked a lot like this:

I didn't take any progress pics, I got busy and lets face it those kind of pics have been put up hundreds of times already. I didn't buy any patch panels, I made all the pieces I needed out of the box side I have. The exception is i did buy some 16 guage sheet for the seat belt anchor area. Thicker there is a good thing IMO.

I had to patch the lower section of the body mount too. Overall it turned out pretty good.

I have the rocker tacked in place, the inner rocker is already there...but I'm out of gas for my welder now. :doah: All that is left on this side is finish welding in the outer rocker and add that corner piece behind the door. Then repeat on the driver's side.

Looks really good Rene. Nice attention to detail on the metal work.
 
Sorry to hijack, but I'm friggin' proud of myself :D Got my box side all finished up, now on to stripping the interior / sanding everything for a nice coat of epoxy sealant primer, then paint :D Gotta figure out what color scheme to go with though...

The black paint is just to cover the bare metal for right now, and to help me see where I need to do some more filler work / sanding before I prime it up. I'll sand it all off before I lay down the primer

well we know who is the body man on this site "trusty you think" good job

LOL, trust me I don't hold a candle to the likes of Ryoken, or vtblazer or many others. Those guys do work that will truly make your jaw drop.

My mindset with this is: I hate rust, so even if it turns out ugly but the rust is gone I'll be happy. I learn by doing...see what works, what doesn't etc etc. I currently have a budget that is so modest it's embarrassing.

Add it up and you get what you see so far.
