I used my lock plate depressor, removed the lock ring to get at the horn assembly to see what I could see. A pic of this part is in Dremu's reply a few up from this one. There is a plastic part and a brass part that is crimped to it. The brass under-ring keeps constant contact with a spring loaded ground that is underneath it.

The plastic dealie has a spring loaded aluminum pin in a small barrel that contacts the brass part. I removed this entirely, separated the brass from the plastic and soldered a wire to the small tab the spring loaded part normally touched. Then put the wire through the plastic barrel, re-installed the lock plate and installed the wheel.

You can see the plastic barrel the wire has to pass through. Once the wheel was on I trimmed the wire and crimped on a spade connector.

This is where the wire passes through to the horn button.

Victory. :waytogo:

That was a nice distraction from some ugly work I don't feel like doing...:haha:

My gas tank is out and I have the DIY shackle flip sitting here. I also have stainless fuel and brake lines on the way. Time to clean the frame of rust scale and get it painted in something durable.

Before:

Time to break out my air powered needle scaler. Looks like this:

5 minutes with the scaler and it looks like this now.

I haven't found a better/faster tool for removing rust scale, especially in small tight spaces like this.

Wheel looks good.

I guess I`m going to Princess Auto...that looks like it worked awesome on the rust! :thumb:

Sooooo.... how much can one expect to pay for one of those '88-'93 steering wheels from a salvage yard now?

As common as hey are I don't think they'd be any more tha $20 at a pick n pull.

Well this build escalated since last time I poked my head in here :haha:

So has the budget. ..lol.

Really, I blame Russel for sending all the cool.parts my way.

Some pics for Dave.

Shows the diameter difference.

This is the '72 wheel next to the 90's wheel.

Left to right, 72 wheel, 80's wheel, 90's wheel. No difference between the 80's wheel and the 90's wheel.

The other difference between the earlier wheels and the 90's wheel is the horn set-up. I have a second non tilt column here I'm gonna dig into deeper. The 90's wheel needs a ground wire with a spade connector coming up to the horn button.
thanks Rene'....I drove my Dually again today, and some extra frontal room would definitely be nice....I'll put that on the list for the next visit to the junkyard.

It's just a simple wire to ground with a spade connector. I'll just whip something up.

I had to be good, it's a hundred mile drive home and I had been up for 22 hours. :doah:

I had a ton of fun, Dan is a funny guy...and you guys together are hilarious. :waytogo:

Every visit to you guys is awesome, Deb and Vanessa had a blast too. We did have to stop in the middle of east bumblefukk for a potty break for Deb. It was good to take a walk around the truck in the cool air too. I was getting pretty sleepy for a while. You guys gotta come up here and stay the night sometime soon...now that your done flinging sh1t all over Dan's place. :haha:

We had a great time at Dan's you could spend hours looking and listening to his stories of all his stuff! What was cool was we got his ole 70? running enough to move it, while we were half drunked up, luckily that was before Dean went for his pony ride!!!!!

Well, a minor update. Many small parts have been arriving and just put in another order from DIY4X. All my stainless fuel and brake lines are here, as well as numerous tidbits from LMC. I've been removing the fuel and brake lines, and getting ready to por-15 the inside of the frame. Shackle flip is in progress, just waiting on some spring eye bushings from Kert.

It appears that I'm staying 1/2 ton for this year anyways. I do have the Ford D60 here, and a drivers drop 241. No 14 bolt rear for now...so 1/2 ton it is. I do need to get this back up to mobile in the next few weeks. I bought a project car and will be wanting it in the garage when it arrives.

and that will be an interesting project as well....can't wait to get some good looks at it!

Made it through the thread:popcorn:. Things you mentioned in person are all coming together now in the build process. Cant wait to see more on here and in person. Hopefully theres some things you can get done easier with 2 sets of hands instead of one! I went into JB's today and almost couldnt resist buying everything i could afford.. But then i got to thinking about LS swaps after seeing yours and thought it may be better to save money than to sink it into an old 350 tbi.

Cheers!:thumb:

Swing by if you want, I had to work this morning...but should be in the garage shortly. :waytogo:

Thanks for the help Nick! Bit of a tough grind working on the stuff we were. Lots of time and cussing and not much "visual progress". It all helps though, and getting all those fuel and brake lines out was a huge help! I wish I had as much success on the shackle brackets...

Thanks again!

:waytogo: no worries ! Im glad i could help, i could have turned wrenches on that thing until the sun came up, but life has its responsibilities. If i didnt have to work i would have probably stayed until you booted me out. I always appreciate the hospitality and ill keep coming and helping as much as you need a hand. What would working on an older truck be without cursing and knuckle bustin?

Cheers

P.s With all the smilies to choose from :doah:and not a single one drinking a beer...:doah:
