'90 K5 - The Nevada Blazer [Post 1437: School me on alternators)

Not much of an update, but today I passed smog with the truck. :D Glad that's over with. I wonder if they take into account the amount of exhaust that's spewed into the air while revving the engine in park versus under load? Seems like it would burn much cleaner under load.

Also, yesterday I got the top taken off the truck so I could haul a bunch of stuff into my studio. Boy is it nice to have a multi-functional truck again. Makes me think that I'll need to build my cage in such a way that the top of it, and the back bar are removable so I can still put tall things in there after caging it.

Not sure if your still looking for roof rack Ideas , but I stole this from somebodys thread :waytogo:

That's a really cool set up. However, I'm more interested in a lumber rack style set up. I am thinking I might put down some expanded steel or something across the bottom to make a basket for holding extra gear though... a sort of crossover between what you've posted and a traditional lumber rack.

i don't know if it's too light duty for what your intending, but i've had a thule bike rack on my blazer for years and have been impressed w/ what it can hold. it's a heavy vinyl coated rectangular tube (about 1x1.5) mounted to the rain gutters in the front and w/ bolts through the top in back. it has locks on the knobs so it can't be stolen. i primarily used it for carrying my canoe, but i've had as many as ten 12' pressure treated 2x12s up there. another time i had a dozen of those oval landscape railroad ties up there. i wouldn't plan on doing it all the time, but it handled the weight fine the few times i've used it like that.

here's what it looks like

I guess it's already been covered but just to add another comment on your trans situation my 700 shifts pretty hard and I can definitely tell when it's downshifting through the gears. It has a Transgo Jr shift kit FWIW.

So I guess I missed something but why are you building this truck basically into what your green blazer is/was?

Ahh ok I get that. Sometimes I wonder where my k10 will "end" up someday. I've already told my dad once this body is trashed we're going to swap a crew cab on and re-do the cage... but that'll take quite a few years on the trail to get to that point. :)

I understand wanting a fully functional truck.

Oh, remember I mentioned a while back you needed to come wheeling with us? Once you get settled and get this thing built how you want let me know and we'll go. :)

I like the sound of that. Interested in doing something with a more stock truck? :D I've got an itch to get out on the trail...

There is a good trail not far from here that is a blast for rigs that arent all built. I still have a good time there! It's where my buddy took me a few times to introduce me to the rocks.

When you get a chance, go check out the moon rocks if you haven't. There up pyramid highway 445. Nice score on the k5. What brought you to Reno? I just moved back to Washington after spending 3 years in Reno.

Hey don't knock fallon, I ran deliveries for 3 years in northern nevada and fallon was one of my favorites, the people where nice out there. Fallon NAS was an interesting place to go, ran a few deliveries in there. I use to heard stores of people driving south on 95 of Fallon and experiencing low flying jets of the top of their cars.

Also, if you get a chance, take that TBI 350 over Kingsbury or Mount Rose summit and see how well it breathes at that altitude! I took my 89 suburban over Mt Rose and to South Lake Tahoe once and it did not like.

Where exactly is the trail? Would you be interested in doing this on the 3rd or 4th weekend of September?

I am under the impression that Moon Rocks requires a heavily modified truck. Is that not the case?

The local 4x4 club goes out on Sundays, which don't work for me. So, I haven't had any opportunity to get shown around. They're doing a stocker-friendly run tomorrow, but again, it's a Sunday. :( I guess there's wheeling right outside of Sun Valley too. What do you know about that? It's just a stone's throw from my house. We've had an expensive month, so hopefully September will have a bit more of a wheelin budget. :D

When I get back from the Blazer Bash, we can find some good places to play.

Not sure where your living at, but if you head up Pyramid 445 just north of McCarran, up the hill before the shopping area, people 4 wheel and ride atvs back in that area. When I went up to Moon Rocks it was in my stock family F150, so didn't do any wheeling, but you could have some fun in that area. There are some serious rocks to climb there as well.

Also seen guys trail riding back in Spanish springs off vista, just pass the ball fields. There are BLM trails that run way back. Light 4 wheeling there, I use to take my K10 back in there to go target shooting. Thats one thing about northern Nevada, so many places to just go off the road on to BLM land and fallow trails for miles. Been up near the Black Rock Desert for work before, always wanted to go explore up there. It is very desolate there.

It's called Bald. If you take 168 out of Fresno up to Shaver Lake you turn right on Dinkey creek rd then left on rock creek rd and you're there. Rock creek rd kinda turns into the trail. It's not too challenging (although there are spots to "play") but it's a fun one day turn around. We've camped there before but just for fun, not because you have to.
I'll see if we can do something but I wouldn't count on it for right now. We're going up to another trail this next weekend and I'm afraid that might be it for both me and my truck for a while... I'm having surgery on my ankle in October and I need to start saving $$$ for when I'll be down. I'll talk to the guys I go with though and see if they're interested...

Yeah that's a long haul for ya'. You'd almost have to come the day before and make it a couple day deal.
