97 King Cab DS-Ton build - Rock Jock 60 and shaved 14

What do they recommend to run in the magnum box? It's just a set of NP241 reduction gears, not?

Martin

It is just 241 reduction gears. They say you can use either gear oil or atf, but they are all running gear oil in their personal magnum boxes.

I put in a quart of Mobile 1 synthetic ATF, rigged up a T between the vent and fill plugs, adjusted the vent line so it was as inclined as possible and took it for a 20 mile drive.

I checked temps when I got home with my infra red thermometer, the Magnum box was the coolest at 145°F, 205 was 157°F, NV4500 and rear diff were in the 250°s so everything seemed normal. The 205 puke tank was still dry, but there was about 1 OZ of ATF in the Magnum box puke tank.

I'm just going to drive it and let the magnum box figure out what level of fluid it wants. I may do one of those creeper breathers, that way it will squirt the fluid back in once it cools off. I'd probably need to switch back to gear oil though as I doubt they're rated for ATF.

I don't suppose we could get a shot of the "puke cans"? My clocked 241 just recently started puking a little. But the trans level is good and no leaks around the clocking ring, so it's the 241 itself.

I will take a picture later, but the 205 has an amsoil bottle with a hole in the lid to stuff the hose in and two smaller ones to vent. The magnum box is the same but with a water bottle.

You can buy nice ones, this was just an emergency quick fix to limit the amount of oil dumping all over my engine.

Good looking build, like the ext cab s-10 style :D
I use this style catch cans on my t-case and transmission and about to install one for my PCV circuit on the engine as well (I used can-am bellows on the differentials). Nice this about these is they can fill up a little if you roll or whatever and can drain back to the gearbox when cooled off or righted back up.

I put another 50ish miles on the S-10 today (109°F). Everything looked good, about 2oz in the puke tank now for the Magnum Box.

I need to buy/make one like Norby posted up so it just sucks the fluid back in when it cools off.

Does the vent tee onto both of those ports on the bottom? Kinda curious if I might be able to use one.

You run the vent to the right port in the picture and unless you puke that tank as full to the top of the straw it shouldn't leak, even in a flop.

It works like a radiator overflow tank, oil gets pushed up into it and if it fills up past that tall tube it would dump out the other one (you could put a hose on that to dump out somewhere other than all over whatever is under it).

When the system cools back down it will suck the oil back into the t-case/axle/whatever. My searching says that they are called a "recirculating overflow tank". Unfortunately all of the ones I'm finding are at least a pint and run about $150. I may try to make my own. The design could be simplified by just putting a fitting on the top and bottom of the sealed tank as long as you make sure you run the top hose down to a level below the bottom of the transfer case so that it can't overflow in the event of a flop.

Yea, that's huge. I don't have anywhere that would fit in my engine compartment, not to mention that at 13" long the nipple would be almost the same height as the vent on top of the Magnum Box.

The ones I used on the buggy are a little smaller and they have larger fittings to use larger hose. I ended up running the vent side through a hose to under the fuel tank to a mini filter. These are Zirgo or something brand I got on ebay for like $35 each I think.

edit: here they are but I paid much less. Maybe they would fit: http://www.zirgo.com/catalog/Overflow-Tanks/Modular-Overflow-Tanks

Mount them in the bed?

I'd prefer to keep stuff under the hood. The ones MNorby posted up would work, but I'll probably just make something myself.

I'm thinking of something similar, but both his and your puke tanks will overflow if you are inverted for any period of time. The vent for the puke tank needs to extend below (above if you're inverted) the level of fluid in the t-case/axle/whatever it is venting. In other words you would need to run a hose from the vent of the t-case to the puke tank and from the vent of the puke tank to below what the level of the oil would be in the t-case if it were inverted.

On the gas tank in the Blazer I made sure to run the vent line in such a way that it extended in front of, behind, above, below and on either side of the tank. Oil would be a bit more forgiving as it is thicker and not as volatile.

That's how I have my fuel too, a high loop then a loop around the tank then down below plus ball valves to shut off if needed. The t-case and trans vents go back down to about the height of the top of them but I figure by the time it fills up the cans and can start leaking I certain hope it is righted back up.

I picked up my driveshaft from the shop today. It's got some specialty Hi-Angle Driveline CV I got from a friend with just a standard long slip 1350 u-joint.

I've got about 130 miles on the S-10 since I switched to ATF in the Magnum Box. It's spit out about 3 or 4oz total into the puke tank so I think I need to do some sort of recirculating reservoir soon.

Saturday I'm going to fab up a t-case mount and Sunday I'm hoping to take it on an easy shakedown run.
