97 sas'sy Sierra/ 80 Cheep 10: tales of a phat block

The CUCV trucks and Blazers that I've seen just had a speedometer and a fuel gauge. I don't know about the ambulance version, but I don't think it would be any different.

Buddy of mine has the ambulance version. It's not any different

I wouldn't think the military would spend extra money on a tach if it wasn't neccessary. Pretty sure the 6.2s had a governor or rev limiter or whatever anyway. Plus all the CUCVs had automatics.

I've always dug those ambulances though. How cool are they? What does your buddy use it for? I've always thought they would make a kick-A camping and hunting rig.

Why would you put 305 heads on a 350? The 305 heads have smaller ports and smaller valves. The only advantage is the smaller combustion chamber to bump up compression which in itself won't make up for the power loss of the smaller heads. Do yourself a favor and get a set of vortec heads. :deal:
bringing this question back up as I didn't see it answered.
why go with 305 heads? at that point why not just keep the 350 heads?

Bump the compression up a bit. They can be made to flow pretty good too. Do some googling, I found lots of info on them.

Picked up a set of 416 305 heads imma use.

I've heard of people doing that. I think you have to use 93 octane or better, if that's a concern.

The motor is just a stock rebuild, should be around 9-9.5 compression from what I've read.

My buddy Craig put 305 heads on his 383. Everyone here have him crap.

It was quite funny.

Maybe if you machine in larger valves and do some heavy porting they might flow better. If you're stuck on compression, just get some 350 heads and have them milled down.

Well started on the new mill today, pulled the old heads/intake/cam out.

Tore the 305 heads down, gasket matched them and the intake. Put new seals(o ring/umbrella's) in, de carbonized em :D

Spec's on cam(comp 12-231-2):

Basic Operating RPM Range:600-4,600
Intake Duration at 050 inch Lift:206
Exhaust Duration at 050 inch Lift:214
Duration at 050 inch Lift:206 int./214 exh.
Advertised Intake Duration:250
Advertised Exhaust Duration:258
Advertised Duration:250 int./258 exh.
Intake Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.432 in.
Exhaust Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.453 in.
Valve Lift with Factory Rocker Arm Ratio:0.432 int./0.453 exh.
Lobe Separation (degrees):111

should be puttin er back together in the in the AM, might even give er a quick shot of paint too :haha:

Should be pretty stout down low I think. Don't have the $$ for springs, so I kept the cam choice on the smaller side.

Prob better to be under cammed as well. I've seen some over cammed motors that don't make power worth squat.

I had good luck with 64cc chamber TBI heads to get a little more compression on a stockish smog 350. Seemed better with those than the worn out 624's.

They're dirt cheap too

Yeah I'm digging the tripod too. :thumb: Just don't bust out the windshield. :haha:

When I first saw the hood propped up on the pole I was like "what does that hood go to?" :doah:
