Allis-Chalmers tractor purchase. Now, The Old Tractor thread. Post yours.

I like the styling of the Minneapolis-Moline "Orchard Tractor" with the cab and fenders--reminds me of a 34 Ford coupe, very sleek and stealthy...not very good for rugged tractor duty uses though--probably why so few sold.."too pretty to use it!"..

Yeah, the UDLX sold a total of about 200 copies, IIRC. When they occasionally come up for auction they can fetch over $100,000. :eek1:

I've just seen a few, but they are a rugged tractor underneath all the pretty sheet metal. The concept was that a farmer could buy just this one machine instead of buying a car AND a tractor both. Low gears for plowing and 40MPH road gear for cruising to town. But the market wasn't there for it. Farmers just kept buying cars. Cabbed tractors wouldn't catch on for another 40ish years. By which time M-M was just about out of business.

Awesome thread guys, thanks for sharing all this! We don't have a whole lot of classic tractors in my immediate area, but I have always enjoyed looking at them. Most of the oldtimers in my area focus on restoring old logging and mining equipment. There is always displays at our county fair with a few classic tractors and a whole lot of other classic machinery and small engines. It makes me sad to see the numbers dwindling from when I was a kid, but the youngest person out there with their machinery and/or tractors is probably in their late 70's. Seems like the younger generation in this god forsaken state is too consumed with what the government is going to give them for free.

Off my soapbox, like I said thanks for sharing the stories and photos!

Here's something you don't see every day, running this all day would truly try a mans patience.

My H, 1951 model. Only things I've done to it is rewire it, swap the generator out for a Toyota alternator, and replace the points. It's been running the last 3 years on 12volt and hasn't yet burnt out the points. When I do it'll get electronic ignition. Note- I did not do the red white and blue theme

If you used a coil with an internal resistor the points wont burn--if its a coil without a resistor, a ballast resistor from a Chrysler product with points from the 60's and 70's works fine..they cost about 3 bucks..

Oh I know, I actually have a spare ballast resistor. I'm just curios as to how long the points will last and when they fry I'll use it as an excuse for electronic ignition.

As long as you have a good condensor the points will last a long time--its when the condensor starts going they get a pit on one contact and a "tit" on the other one...
Personally I prefer points, even though they are "obsolete" and rather costly now...at least you can file them and get the engine running again in most cases--if the electronic ignition "brain" decides to quit your boned..better have a spare one on hand...

I've seen guys who used a pickup coil and GM module to replace points by adapting it to the old distributor--others simply saw off the old distributor where the shaft comes out of the engine, and "splice" a GM HEI distributor to the original one's shaft & base..

The 2 brothers have about 200 in that AC collection.

One local vintage tractor show has two tractor rides during the show, and this was one of the stops. The rides are anywhere from 10 to 30 miles each. Good times.

Picture. I tried to buy the teactor, but they w8uld not come down.

I was right on line for hitting the trailer. One shot and it was on. The AMT did not know it was towing something up hill onto a trailer

I figured you were lined up on the trailer. But the angle of that picture just makes it look a bit off. :)

This is why I bumped this post.

I got a kick out of this guy doing field work with a garden tractor.

My old man does garden work, with a field tractor.
