I think i have found an aluminum radiator i want to give a try on this engine, https://www.summitracing.com/parts/fbr-fb167/
or the summit version that is very close. its basically the same size as what i have now (as big as i can find that wont take crazy amounts of modifications) it has larger tubes in it, 5/8 vs the stock 1/2"
I was also looking into possibly adding an oil cooler. id just really like this to idle for an hour with a/c in traffic at 210-215 or less. man that would be magical :)

one nice thing here is i can take this giant radiator out of this truck and stick it in my other truck to help keep its temps just a little lower when wheeling with A/C. possible two birds with one stone if the aluminum radiator really helps this truck.

I don't like rads without a transmission cooler. After all the setups I've ran I finally came to the conclusion that GM and other manufacturers had it right with the trans cooler built into the rad.

This radiator does have the built in trans cooler. if you look in the questions section they cover it. also confirmed on the frostbite website. i think summit just has a typo on their page.

I just read the specs, saw the ports in the picture but the pictures are wrong often.
 
I can tell you that my big block truck will get the oil temp close to 220* at idle on the summer. If I keep moving, it cools off, of course. It seems to stay below coolant temperature most of the time besides idling and low vehicle speed stuff.
It doesn't have an oil cooler, but it's a solid roller cam with full roller rockers.
Is adding an oil cooler overthinking, or doing what the OEM learned in later years? Lots of factory stuff got them starting in the 90s. There must be a reason for them to spend the money.
The trick is how to add it to an older truck.

My 88 has an oil cooler, my parents 96 has an oil cooler, my 05 has an oil cooler... why do all these have factory oil coolers? GM knew/ learned something...

as far as how hard is it to add? easy- they make kits that attach where your oil filter is.
 
Mine is in front of the rad the trans cooler is on the other side. Do not have a oil temp gauge so no idea what the temp it runs. My trans has a gauge and it runs normal temp.

Yeah IF i add one it will go in front of my radiator on the passenger side, the hoses will be a little longer than i would like but it would likely be fine.
I'll order this radiator first and give it a shot ( yeah it will be summer time before i really know...) if i still don't have things where i like it i really think i'll add an oil cooler.

I'm not so sure of that. My 97 S10 4.3 2wd 5-speed truck has the factory engine oil cooler. No trailer package either. Oh yeah it's a stepside bed too so it is even smaller than normal. I have no reason to believe why it came with an engine oil cooler. Other than GM wanted to add to the dealer's bottom line when the lines start leaking like they always do at the crimped fittings. I know mine are.

They do work, don't get me wrong. I just don't know if I would kill myself to install one.

Since its a direct fit kit it would be about as hard as installing a trans cooler
