Burnt burb resurrection (It's mine again!)

my kids truck starts just fine all year... and the burbs only a toy/project so its not really gonna be a big deal. I thought of trying to keep the tbi and cammin it up but then im payin for a chip tune and all that too plus I still got to have the vortec tbi intake.. I guess that could be a used one, but im not worried about losing the FI really... I believe ive only driven it a dozen times this winter as it is anyway. and from a reliability and ease of trail fix's standpoint theres a lot to be said for a carb motor

Few questions...

it appears during talking to a few others the 5.3 thing may be cheaper than I originally thought. so, a few of you have done the swap. what am I looking at for actual install costs?

I thought I needed mounts... I have all the tools, material, and skills to do it already.. that's out.

I thought a pcm re-flash was $200...... I was wrong.

I know I need the flexplate spacer, that's a LOT cheaper than I thought too. $55

really what else do I need besides a hose or 2 and some exhaust pieces for tie in? :dunno: Ive seen others doing things with sensors and such... but doesn't the motor already have all the sensors it needs?

If its because of gauges I can buy a mechanical gauge set for $50

Looking at the mods I would do to the stock motor im still only looking at 300-320 hp. and half the mpg. by my original thinking I was going to need $600-$800 more to get this 5.3 in and running.

if it can be in and driveable for like $200-$250 ish ill keep it.

Bolts for the spacer, $32
Fuel pump, $65
Fuel line adaptation can be done for as little as $30
Pcm calibration from eagle mark I think is $75
Exhaust hook up at the exhaust shop $70
Is your fuel rail a return style or return less? If return less you will also need a vette fuel filter, $30

Did your engine come with a cooling fan? If not, you will need electric ones, or just grab a mechanical one from the junk yard., $??

The oil pressure sensor adapter for your stock burb gauge is free if you have an 1/8th npt tap.

The water temperature adapter for your stock burb gauge is free of you have a 12x1.5 die.

Other than that, is your harness already modified? Or will you be doing it yourself? If doing it yourself it will cost probably $20 for the relays and fuse block. If not it will be a few hundred.

So total is hard without knowing what all you already have. Assuming your harness is already done and you have mechanical fan to run, and you already have oxygen sensors, your looking at $300 or less.

I can get the tap n die.

I think my motor has a fan on it.

the exhaust hook up I can do but will need pieces... should be cheap enough

fuel system is stock 88 tbi so I believe it has a return line and the 5.3 is a 2001 so I think its return style.

I didn't realize I needed a different pump. I JUST changed it a few months ago

I will just mod the harness myself

so,
harness $25
spacer $55
bolts $32
pcm $90 (shipping)
pump $65
lines $30
pipes $50ish
_______________
total $347 so far, + at least $50-$75 or more at least for un thought of junk like fluids etc.
its getting up there. Im guessing a realistic $500.:doah:

Yes you do need a different fuel pump. The tbi runs like 12 psi and the vortec is like 55. You use the ep381 fuel pump.

yeah selling the 350 is there... I keep forgetting that. around here that's like $250 if they can hear it run first. still pays for a bunch of it though. the hard part will be coming up with the money to do it in the first place... the recouping part would just be a plus. as it is now I have little left to live on after all the bills and not a lot to spare... then I have to add a $175 a month loan for this taxes snafu and still pay on my $3500-$4000 in doc bills I just got. I shouldn't even spend the money if I sell the 5.3 on the burb. but I try not to sell toy stuff and pay bills:rolleyes: once its toy money it just transfers to a different toy. im currently looking for the things I need (heads n such) to go the other route on CL just to see if its do-able cheaper still.

Honestly you shouldn't be doing or spending any money on your burb. Sit on the 5.3, Get clear of your bills, then install it correctly the way you want.

that's the way I should go yes... but I gotta have a little fun in the process too :dunno:

It just dawned on me that I can get a little extra on the loan against my burb and pay for the install... itll only raise my payment like $5-10 a month and I could do it right now... well when it warms up at least.

maybe the 5.3 isn't dead after all... I gotta run the numbers quick

Was just going to make this point. If a project of this type is really getting down to worrying about a few hundred dollars, its not the right time to do it.

Sucks, but it is what is is.

I know we all want to do projects and upgrades, but it seems like your truck works as-is. So what if it doesn't have that much power. My 350 burb does everything it needs to....just slowly.

I'm with Chevy305 on this one. Let your project sit until you catch back up elsewhere. Use the downtime to plan the right way to do it.

You'll be miles ahead with a little patience.

That's the mentality that has pushed the economy into a huge hole. Get a loan ontop of a loan ontop of a loan.

But if that works for you and you don't mind being in debt and paying interest then go for it. You said it was a project and you don't need to drive it right away. Why rush it and put yourself in debt more. But its your money not mine so do what you want.

:dunno::dunno:

I have to get the loan either way so that part doesn't matter... if I add another $500 to a $5300 loan that HAS to happen its not going to hurt anything... The irony here is the reason I have to pay this tax deal is because of my attempt to pay off a bunch of debt:rolleyes:

probably not out as far as I need to go..:dunno: I cant do 12 payments or anything. it has to be like 36 or more. id rather pay them and deal with the bank than deal with the irs for that long

That's cool. I just thought I was talking to a friend once that was in the hole with the IRS and just to Fk with them he set up $10 a month payments.

The IRS will give you up to 5 years that I know. And no interest. I know someone that is doing just that now.
You just have to tell them what you can afford and also negotiate the total try and remove penalties.

My thoughts behind it were that either if a real emergency came up, the IRS payments shouldn't effect your ability to get a loan through the bank, and if you ever needed to sell the burb, you wouldn't have a loan out against it.

ill sell the CC first:waytogo: the burb may be looked at as a toy at the moment but id sell every other vehicle I have first. Ill have to call them and ask about payments. H&R told me they don't do payments and would want it all up front. If they gave me a while that could help a lot.
