Chalet's 72 Jimmy Thread

great outing... reminds me of one of the first trips I took in my Jimmy - minus all of the hunting and children, but that there is another story all together! Anyhow looks like fun....

Kind of a newbish question, but how hot is a dana 44 hub supposed to get under normal operation? I put new bearings an axle joints in my both sides of the 72 (first time I've ever done this). It was missing the thrust washer on the inner side of the spindle bearing, bolt that holds the downside of the backing plate, and the little nub on the spindle nut that holds the lockwasher was worn down to almost nothing - all on the passenger side. I was short on time and figured it worked without them before, so would try halfassing that side back togetherr That side was making funny noises(go figure) on the way home and that hub was pretty hot to the touch after the first try, so I got new parts and rebuilt it again. Drove it a few miles and both hubs now are a little warm to the touch, but I figure thats normal. I drive it 50 miles round trip to work a couple times and don't check the hubs, but no kind of smoking or obvious overheat, then yesterday I ran it around town for a bit. Got back home and both sides are hot to the touch. I'm thinking this is normal because the brake rotors are part of the hub and I could see that as being the source of the heat when you're doing a lot of stop and go - am I right or do I need to take it apart again?

It could very easily be the heat from the brakes, I know mine can get hot with a lot of stopping. Spinning the hub by hand (tire removed, brake pulled off) will help tell you if it is rotating without a whole lot of resistance. Even when properly assembled and greased it usually won't go a whole rotation after you let go. Hope this helps.

thanks, that makes sense. I was just wondering if I did something wrong because tomorrow I'll be redoing the bearings on the front 10 bolt I'm putting in the Chalet. Wanted to make sure I'm doing it right before I start on it.

I bought the aluminum bezel off of mekdad over on 69-72. Although not perfect, it looks much better than the jagged hole with crooked pioneer cd player that was in there. Still need to work out the speaker situation. I mounted a couple of 6 1/2's in the door where there had already been holes cut. Sounds ok, but there's some loose things in the driver door that buzzes when the volumes up. I need to figure out how I'm going to mount some good speakers in the rear. Also, I tossed in a pic from my birthday a while back when a bunch of family was over - little kids dig my truck.:D

edit: boogered up the top a/c vent trying to get it out. The "chrome" finish was coming off, so it was time for a new one anyway.

Yes Kids love the big convertables! Great Pic. Stereo looks nice but kinda outta place, like ChefBear at a Jazzercise class. :)

I think I have a vent I can send you, lemme check.

Love this thread! Hunting, kids, horsetrading, and automotive! Can't ask for more! Going back to Wisconsin this year for rifle season. My daughter said she wants to go hunting too. Think she's serious this time... :waytogo:

Typical Chalet fix. Had a brake light/rear signal a while back and decided it was a problem with the harness in the steering column. Bought a new one of those, installed, and managed to lose a couple pieces out of the horn button while I was at it. Installed the steering wheel upside down too....Haven't had a horn or self cancelling signals for a while. Turn signal still didn't work, figured out the wires were loose where PO had spliced a trailer harness in.

I wasn't crazy about the foam handled aftermarket steering wheel anyway, so ordered a Grant Classic from Summit - part# grt-201 along with an install kit. Was trying to find something with the a GMC hornbutton, but only folks that had one was LMC. I think this one looks good, thought I'd share.

last trip before it goes under the knife. About done parting out my Chalet, so going to go ahead and rebuild my 72. Got my first delivery from the Brown Santa on Friday with a bunch of suspension parts from ORD. Hopefully will have the body off this sucker in about 2 weeks. Planning on a little lift, new crate motor, rebuilt tranny/t-case and new drivelines. Then new seats, 10 point roll cage and custom bumper with tire carrier.

But first - me, the old man a few bluecats and a lot of Lonestar.

Love the 72, I think that will have to be my next project. What lake you fishing at? Looks like a nice string of cats you got there!!

You taking the body off to have the rust fixed that thing is gonna be sweet? If your getting it painted what color you doing?

Got a little place on Lake Arrowhead that's pretty good fishing. Time to step up from the wal-mart trotlines though. Never seem to catch anything over 10-12 pounds and usually have a few straightened hooks on the lines. Guessing the big ones are getting away.

When the body is off going to try and cut out the rust. Seems to be mainly the rocker and maybe rocker box areas. Front fangs will prob come off and I'll try straightening out the little bit of fender damage. Probably going to go military sand brown and diy it. Always like gotlabs' truck. Light brown paint, darker brown softtop. Leave the chrome bumpers and grill for now. Maybe some black tube work down the road.

And, corner of floorboard on the passenger side. Hoping I can just clean this up and put a weld on it.

Been too busy to spend much time on this. Finally got the new rear springs/shackles/zero rates installed, then took the front axle out. Going to redo the breaks, change the diff fluid, paint it, then stick it back under with the new springs.

It will see some brush, plus the kids like to climb in and out so I don't see the need to spend a lot of money on paint job to be pissed when it gets scratched.I'm going to paint this thing myself. I'd like to use rapco paint again because it is tough and worked well the last time I painted a truck. Wanted to get back close to the original ochre and the closest thing I could find is vietnam era "yellow earth". I had them send me a can to test. Little lighter than I expected, almost a butter yellow. I painted a little on the tranny hump to compare and have been looking at it for a few days. I think it will look good with black top, wheels, and black trim. Let me know what you think.
