Chalet's 72 Jimmy Thread

Thanks. I need to hurry up, weather is getting nice and I miss driving my truck.

Nice low-end TQ.....

Just what you're going to want in a heavy truck. :waytogo:

:usaflag:

I'm almost wondering with that type of torque if I should switch from 3.73 to 3.08 gears down the road. I'll wait and see how it performs first with the axles that are in it.

Still slow around here so cleaned up front axle today. No pics. Gears look really good, brake pads are still good but calipers look pretty old. Might as well replace all that. I redid the bearings, races, and axle joints a while back so I think I'll leave that part alone.

Installed the steering brace. I'm glad I did it now, would have been a serious pain in the rear if the truck was together. Can see why I never installed the one I had for the Chalet.

This thing is going to be about as cool as it gets when it is done. Love the direction you are going with the small lift, 33's, clean style with a healthy small block. Gonna be nice.

Front back on today. Little things keep hanging me up. Waiting on brake parts from Napa, getting the wrong brake parts. Putting the calipers on upside down. No clips with shoes or calipers, wrong little bushings for the caliper bolts. Tightened the nut and lines on my new front brake lines in the wrong order, now the bend @ the banjo bolt is backwards on both sides. Wouldn't be a big deal but the hardlines to the braided lines are stripped, so I put them back together with vice grips. Hopefully I can get them apart and back together one more time or I'll be waiting on new hard lines. Brother was sick so I spent the last 2 days actually working, and not working on my truck.

I know to expect this kind of ****, just irritating.

Ordered this to get my firewall like this.

and going to try and build this with a tire carrier added. Yes I know the mig is too small, but we have a 220 amp stick welder in the shop. Might try and build the bumper first as there seems to be more room for error. But, need to get my firewall patched and painted before I put my engine in so I might start there.

Thanks to bigbadchev84 - his design and pic.

Good stuff:waytogo: Just remember to go slower than you think for welding the sheet metal. Just spots all around. And even doing that you can burn through if you get in too much of a hurry.

Good call on the bumpers, I really like the ones on bigbadchev84's truck. You're getting there!

just a quick question on removing the heater core and fan. I see a lot of guys doing this, but why? is it just a cleaner look, or is there some other issue?

Never used the a/c, and that stuff just took up too much space.

people also usually go with a aftermarket hvac system like vintage air, also gets rid of the bulk.

is vintage air just a plain better system, or is it primarily cutting down on the bulk?

sorry to hijack your thread.

Not for sure on this so hopefully someone else will chime in, but i think its more efficient. some also come with patterns to cut the dash holes for non-ac trucks/blazers to make them look factory, that's the main reason i would want it.

I plan to use the VintageAir system as well. My only concern with their system is that it is not a fresh air system, and only recirculates the interior air. I'm hoping that the defroster will still work correctly and won't fog up the windshield on cold rainy days.

I have a Vintage Air system and it takes away alot of the bulk, blows super super cold, used the factory controls and vents.

Awesome build so far, Just to give you a heads up I got my last pair of D rings for the Jimmys bumper off of ebay for $21 shipped. The local steel yard was asking $27 each for them.

Welder and patch panels here, hopefully can get on that this week.

Body mounts done, yes I like to grease things.

What are these brackets on the rear quarter panels? Never really noticed them, but I'm going to take them off. If they happen to be some rare 72 option I'd hate to trash them.
