Chalet's 72 Jimmy Thread

The holes in the cross member looked to be centered, I'll double check tomorrow. Thought about opening those holes up that the bushing/sleeves fit through to the the adapter. But seems like you would want those to be snug without a lot of play.

Maybe if you loosen up the engine mounts you can get some wiggle room to get the bolts in the tranny cross member

Couple things going on right now. Haven't messed with trans as haven't had the time to get out there and get greasy. Been working on smaller things.

Got the engine mostly buttoned up. Accessories, dizzy, and fuel pump. Ended up ditching the braided stainless line I had and went back to stock fuel line. The edelbrock intake is a little taller, so I ordered the longer carb inlet. Little bit bigger filter, nice clean look imo.

Need a new air cleaner. Haven't figured out which way to go.

Accessory brackets are Summit's brand serpentine conversion. Nice clean look, fairly easy on the wallet, easy install. Think chefbear had these on his rig and had good luck. Just need to get a new power steering pump line built, stock one is too long and doesn't fit with the way the hard line is bent.

Think the pulley's look good. Can't decide if I should mount a fan to the water pump, or go electric cooling fan route. Really like the simplicity and reliability of the stock setup, but and Entropy set would be nice.

Next up is the core support. It's good shape, just needs a good cleaning and some black paint.

Long read here......

Finally, gauge panel. Had a thread here a while back when I was deciding which way to go. Was going to use the stock bezel, sent it to Dad, he decided I would be better off with a custom wood bezel, and then he sent them to my cousin who runs his own custom wood shop and then gave it to me for Christmas. I was a little miffed at the time because I had thought it out beforehand, had considered exactly what he had done, and decided not to because I was going to go with the sand yellow color on the truck, and then black everything else. Top, tires, trim, seats, etc. Figured new gauges, in black stock bezel would fit with that nicely. I've been working on manners, so I said thanks, looks great, and then set about getting my head to accept the new direction of the truck brought on by the wood bezel - Anybody that is hard headed knows what I'm talking about. Changed a lot of things he hadn't thought about.

Dad passed away in March. Sucks for a number of reasons, but he had a good long life. Busy up til the end, then got down and went in a hurry. There are definitely worse ways to go. He was my go to guy for fixing anything. Lots of guys on here remind me of him. When we were little cash was tight, and dad kept a yard full of vehicle. Mostly 60's to 80's gm stuff. We'd spend the weekends wrenchin, drive them for a while til the tranny went, then pull it and stick another junkyard tranny in it he got for $50 somewhere. Got under my skin about the time I hit 14 and I swore I'd make enough money when I got older to buy and keep one good vehicle, and pay some other poor sob to work on it. I've been at that point a while, but then about 2000 I got the old project need to fix it up itch and can't seem to shake it. Got that from my Dad, and I'm glad I did. We had lots of good times. Guess I have to figure stuff out myself from here on out.

Back to the panel. Just have to cut the dash "humps" out where the wiper and hedlight switches are, and mount those switches directly to the new bezel. Mesquite wood logged, cut, kilned, and carved by my cousin. Mom had him add the St Christopher because she worries about me since I rolled the Chalet. I'm going to have him do a glove box door and maybe heater control bezel to match whenever I get this thing on the road. Will go with canvas colored bikini top, wood grain oe style moulding for the body, and probably brown seats now too.

Thanks Dad, I think I'm going to like it.

Get the gate bitch :D
P1010006.jpg

This was from January. He didn't want to go because he was already starting to go down(found out later he had been having mini strokes). Even talked on the way up there about how he didn't think he would even drink beer. Didn't know it at the time, ended being the last day we ever hunted and drank together. This was taken about lunch time, man we were drunk by the time the sun went down, don't think either one of us could see straight. Good times I'll always remember.

Sorry to hear about your dad.

Truck is looking good. I wasn't sure about the bezel when I was reading, but that looks really nice. :waytogo:

Thanks. Jacob did a good job on the details. It is a little different, but definitely growing on me.

thanks for sharing about your pops. glad you got some good memories of him.

afa the bezel goes, I like custom stuff as long as it's well done and that certainly looks pretty well done to me. can't wait to see how it looks with all of that wood when you get it finished.

IMHO, that was simply the best single post I've read on this site. I am sorry to hear about your dad though.

At least it looks like you guys had fun until the end. Those memories will last you a life time.

I like the dash, it has a lot of meaning to it. Plus, it's made out of wood. Being a carpenter, you just can't argue with a hand carved piece of art like that..

Keep up the great work..

That thing looks badazz IMO. Very sorry to hear about your dad. Sounds like a great guy and influence. Now you can remember him every time you drive your blazer :waytogo:

Sorry to her about your dad...your story about him is allot like one I would tell about my dad he taught me all the things I know, and was a great guy to hang around with. When we were together there was always beer!

My mom was at our place last year for the kids birthday, so I was building a picnic table and a bench. She said it was scarry how I built things just like dad did.

I told her... did you think I didn`t pay attention when I was a kid.

:waytogo: to all the cool dads that taught there kids how to make something with there hands.

The Jimmy looks sweet man!

Definitely miss the old guy, thanks for all the kind words.

Spent most of the day in between office calls working on the transmission. Put a floor jack under the t-case, pulled the front crossmember and skid plate then used a cutting torch to lengthen the bolt holes and then put it all back together. Everything is straight and tight now. Except one of the torque mount bolts into the side of the t-case. Somehow I overtightened that big ass bolt and stripped the threads in the bolt hole. :dunno: Didn't even feel like it was getting tight, so I guess I'll run with one and a half bolts in there, don't think its a big deal. Might try to find a big ass heli coil down the road if the other one works loose and fix it up.

Went ahead and put the rear drive line in. 1350 cv left over from the Chalet that I had shortened and also HAD's np205 flange. Little overbuilt and also using a conversion joint at the rear diff right now. But after its running and I figure out which gears I need to run - plan on pulling the 12 bolt out for a rebuild and getting a Detroit, alloy shafts, and a 1350 yoke installed.

Yes I'm going to drop some coin on the 12 bolt - don't be a hater. :draw:

Drive shaft looks crooked. I measured it up by the t-case and its centered there - if the frame is straight - 29" between the frame, and the best I could eyeball with a tape measure it was pretty close to 14.5" to the center of the driveshaft. Guess maybe my rear axle is off center a hair.

Core support is on the truck, didn't get any pics. Also picked up a new HD 4 core radiator from Napa. Copper and steel, no plastic. Part# 8010369. Going to stick with stock fan clutch / radiator type setup.

I decided to keep and drop some coin on my 12 bolt too, No hate here:waytogo: As far as the wood bezel goes I too think its kinda cool. This just goes to show how after everything you think you want that Damn truck to look like, it will still change itself into the truck it always wanted to be. As for the trans cross member I had to e-longate the holes on mine and it seems to be just fine even with all the go fast shaking to death it has received so far.

Thanks for that. Seems like these trucks do what they want and I spend a lot of time fighting the truck and second guessing myself.

Oh noez.

Repro - stock plug heatshields. Look like the center plugs are too tight. Think I'll cut the down part off the heatshield and just get some of those 6" ceramic plug boot covers to protect my wires from the exhaust manifold.

That does look good!
Nice Buick in the background...Roadhouse!:D
Thanks, I'm way past ready to drive the damn thing if I could get the little things finished.

That's my brothers 64 Riviera. He swears its the fastest thing he's ever owned. 425 Nailhead, aka as the 465 Wildcat. Fast cars are his thing, not mine. Most of what I know I learned about it on the web helping him find parts.

even though im kinda partial, the dash that your dad made is sweet!

It lives. And no, I'm not going to post another couple pics of my half finished engine bay. But, lets just say progress is being made and that progress sounds pretty dang good with no exhaust past the manifolds......
