Considering a Suburban Tow Rig

I probably should shift this over to a build when I get the truck home, because I'm so good at updating those....

Then we can chat on campers and what not.

We can talk about campers.

I don't necessarily want some big gigantic can over ordeal. I don't want to store it, load it, or drive with it.

I'd like something light weight and minimalist.

I would entertainin the idea of building one. In my mind right now the ideal would be exactly the size of the bed and cab height, and then pop up to 6.5-7 feet high.

Realistically, I will be using tents or the roof top for awhile yet.

Yea, just like that, but I don't want to lose real estate with a traditional slide in.

I have the 1980s version of that minimalist camper, minus the slide rails, sitting idle. If you were local I'd probably just give it to you and watch the progress.

I understand not wanting to lose the bed space the way that slide-ins usually do.

You have a pop up bed camper? You could totally build a trailer to pull that around on. That would be a cool setup.

I love the idea of a slide in, but the cost of those things are absurd.

Not always. Buy one now (at the end of the camping season), and buy from a place where people like to camp. Here is a 2004 6.5' slide-in with appliances for $850. And that's just the first thing that came up on my local CL server, it's not alone. 'Tis the season for camper dumping.

No, I have a very simple bed camper. It would be easy to slide it up and down (as my Grandpa did with his homemade topper 60 years ago), but as it is it's just a fancy shell with windows, door, luggage rack, and one cupboard. Not at all like yours that came all furnished with fancy schtuff.

And I already built the trailer for it years ago. :deal:

This is with the normal topper. I don't think I have a picture of the camping unit, but it's 6 or 8 inches taller. The tailgate comes off and the camper has a single full-height door instead of the pair of gates. It's now serving as an awesome playhouse for my brother's kids until I find some better use for it.

Ah, I think I know what you are talking about now. Cool.

Something very similar to this, except my entire back panel comes off (door included), just in case you want to load a piano in there. :pimp:

It's just a super-tall topper with crank-up windows. Mine came with no internal furnishings except a couple lights and a small cupboard. Not sure what sort of furniture it had come with originally.

Haven't decided what to do with it. It fit nicely on the trailer, but I'm leaning more toward just overlanding in the Suburban. Ideas, ideas.

That's almost to good of a deal. Makes me wonder what works. My max would be about 4K, but would entertain up to 10 if it had slide outs and newer beds

That one is on the cheap side, but I've seen plenty of similar units for <$1500. Some of it is geography, some is seasonal.

You should be able to easily find a nice (nothing broken) unit for <$4k, and for $10k you are now looking at new baseline models.

The only new campers I've seen are 25k plus.

Like everything, some are cheaper than others. This is what I was thinking of (though I admit it is technically $10.8k instead of $10k):

Similar unit for $11.5k:

Not saying that either of you should buy a new camper for $10k, just that $10k can buy a lot of camper in the used market, and that autumn is a good time of year to be buying one, as they often get dumped cheaply at the end of the camping season.

YMMV.

Those are super sketch ads. Why are the names all blocked out?
