CUCV mild usage build. Nothing radical here, move along now.

Last few days its been pretty cold here again and I've had the heat and defrost working. Gotten the all to familiar sweet smell of anti freeze in the cab. Probably explains the film on the windows. Put some stop leak stuff in it tonight and got the film cleaned off the windows. Hope that stops up the leak for a while till I can get back to it and fix it right. So busy at the shop right now, pretty much spending all my time cranking out product.

Local place had an aluminum tool box that I liked, and yeah, I could build one but sometimes, reinventing the wheel doesn't make sense. They had it, in a natural aluminum finish. I asked for it in black which increased the price by $140 and then I'd have to pay an additional $150 shipping. I guess they don't really want sales.

Why not buy the one locally and paint it black?

I'm assuming you mean powder coat it black. By the time I got all the running it around to our nearest place I'd have all of that and more in it anyway.

Meh, prep time and all that... I got better things to do with my time. Pretty damn busy at the shop right now. I could have built the whole thing myself but realistically I just don't have time for that kind of thing and at the price, my time is much more valuable in the shop.

For some reason, my shit gets dents in transit. I had a piece of equipment for the shop delivered last week that had a dent in one of the panels.

I think the next thing up is to get some of the interior stuff going on. Start designing some aluminum door panels and an aluminum dash. Dash is gona be pretty simple. Not gona add a bunch of gauges, water temp, oil pressure, speedo and fuel ought to do it. Round up the tan interior pieces and order up some bed liner as well as a new rubber floor mat.

I think with this one we can finally design the mini aluminum console to go with our dash.

There are some military items left in the cab. I think one is some kind of rifle mount. It's gotta go. Right behind my left ear and rattling.

What are you planning on doing for the door panels?

And I'll take the rifle mount if it's in your way.

Doing up some aluminum door panels that compliment our dash. Been wanting to design up a set for quite some time. One of those opportunities that hasn't presented itself till now. A lot of our trucks become modified enough that they don't work well as R and D trucks. Take my short box build for instance. I have our dash in it however, the floor is pretty heavily modified so the mini console design work doesn't pan out very well for product design.

This truck being kept closer to stock makes it a perfect candidate for some of those things.

You can have the rifle mount, cover the shipping and its yours. Hopefully it comes out, with out me having to get rough with it. I figure if I want a rifle mount there are more modern options available these days.

Ok. When you get it out, lemme know if it's still in one piece (or actually two, IIRC).

Got the mileage numbers figured up today. 11.5 MPG. That's a bit lower than the numbers I see being boasted online.

Figured my RPM's at about 2400-2500 at 55mph with a 36" diameter tire.

That seems really low, even for a TH400 truck. What mods does this truck have that would affect mileage numbers?

And FWIW, my 1/2-ton with tiny tires, anemic gearing, and O/D will pull twice that for mileage, so it is doable with a different mix of parts. I would have thought your mix of parts would be in the 15-17 MPG range. But that's just a guess on my part. What do the folks online claim?

I see 20mpg posted online quite frequently. Don't really believe that but I was hoping for around 15mpg.

I checked the speedometer with a GPS speedo on my phone and its right on. Before the military 37's it was way off.

So far, only mods that have been done that would effect mileage are the larger tires. I know of nothing else that has been done to the truck. I'm assuming it still has the 4.56 gears from the military. I'll check it again in a week or so. I did have front hubs locked in for a couple days.

There has also been a few warm up days where it sat an idled for approx. 15 minutes.

2500 rpm at just 60 mph is going to slaughter your fuel mileage. Mine eeks out maybe 6-8 turning 3100ish at 60. OD is about your only viable option that makes sense. If its that big of a deal to you of course.

20MPG is M1009 mileage (1/2-ton with 3.08 gears). I would not expect that from a 3-speed 4.56 1-ton at all. At least, not in stock form.

I agree with the above post, if you're looking for mileage keep the engine below 1800RPM (O/D or gearing swap).

Or just enjoy it as it is. :dunno:

I wouldnt mind 2100 or so rpm at 60, I think that would be a fair balance and probably almost get mine into double digits.

The Jimmy with 37s gets a consistent 17 mpg. But it's got an overdrive. No clue what RPMS I am turning. Gear calculator says just under 2k

I will say at 75 to 80 that milage number drops to around 12 or 13.

That's me filling it up ( it takes forever) to where its fuel is just below the return in the filler hose. And using the GPS speedo on my phone for milage calculations
