Decisions decisions - Getting closer

Here's another wrinkle. Do you need the HD? How about a new 1500 w/ the smaller diesel? 240 hp, 420 lb-ft, 1600 lb payload, 9200 lbs towing, 28 mpg and it's a good $10k less than a 2500. You can still get it w/ the quad cab and bed side boxes.

I'm seriously thinking about trading in my 2500 for a new diesel 1500 next year for all the reasons above.

That was my intention when I bought a new truck in July but they were selling so well they weren't discounting them much. I could have gotten the ecodiesel for $35K or the 2500 cummins for $38K OTD, all in quad cabs. That's why $28K for the V6 quad was a no-brainer for me. Still gets 24 hwy (21.5-22 mixed real world experience with summer gas) but I'm only seeing 19 now with crap winter gas. Actually going to try a tank of E85 today. With the prices down the E85 is 30% less than regular so that should cover the difference in MPG. It's an experiment. If it pulls 17mpg on E85 I'm happy. If it pulls even 15 I'm still ahead.

For me it's all about pennies per mile. It's my car. I got my truck in July and just went over 20,000 miles this week. The V6 is actually less cents per mile than the diesel even figuring 28mpg highway.

So we're still not that much closer to pulling the trigger on anything because the Army is dragging their feet like crazy. Can't do the deed until it's for sure we're headed to 'Bama, or at least the continental US. Otherwise, I'll buy a $60k crew cab truck and find out we're headed back to Hawaii or something:doah:

That said, I'm trying to get all my ducks in a row so that when we do get final word I can get going on some stuff so there's no big wait after getting there. One thing I've been thinking about/looking at is trailers. I'd like to go gooseneck, but it's not an absolute necessity. Also, I don't want to just drop a ton of money on one either, seeing as we're buying a spendy a$$ truck:whistle: If I didn't mention it, or it wasn't noted I have my blazer to get to wherever we're going, plus a TJ wrangler. My sister left it to me in her will to watch over and fix up for her son once he turns 16. So I've got to get two vehicles from Ohio to Alabama. Once there, I don't see myself towing multiple rigs often, but say I want to get to Blazer Bash next year, I could snag someone else along the way and save somebody some money, etc. So, am I crazy for thinking about a 30+ foot trailer? Should I just plan multiple trips? Is there a place to rent a trailer large enough for two rigs? I know storing a larger trailer is more of a burden. But otherwise, does it hurt to have more trailer than I need for one truck?:dunno:

One reason I bring it up is I found this http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/cto/4924535622.html in Akron. I could have a buddy go check it out for me, but I don't know of anyone offhand that has a gooseneck hitch... Plus, I have no way of picking it up in the mean time. Seems like an awful good deal though, even without ramps.

Freaking Army, get your chit together!!!!

If I had a rig to pull it I would love to have a 36 or 38 foot trailer. I always have a buddy that can't go cause of no trailer or no money.

Just throw it on with mine shoot me some cash when ya can. I really enjoy doing that sort of thing though.

Plenty of places to store a trailer you usually gotta pay for it though

That's kind of what I feel like as well. Just trying to gauge the group's opinion though. My wife isn't as sold on the "very large" trailer however...

I've always wanted a big trailer like that but realistically I don't see it being practical unless you haul a lot. Even if I had a big trailer I would not give up my 18'er, too many thanks you can more conveniently do with a "normal" size trailer.

I always wanted to do the pop up camper on a trailer or a camper plus enough deck for the wheeler, and then you could take it off when you need to tow two rigs.

Real question here, as I've never towed more than 22' but is a big trailer that bad to work with when not truly necessary?

If you have the right tow rig (diesel) and preferably a dually, they are not bad to pull. I've pulled a 26" bumper pull several times with my Cummins. To be honest with you, that truck rode better and got decent gas mileage pulling that. The bad part is finding somewhere to park the damn thing when you are traveling and somewhere to store it while not using it. I say buy the gooseneck . You could always sell it later if you decided it wasnt needed. Just my opinion.

Not a bad plan for sure. I'm getting the Cummins, but srw... Not sure you think that's a deal breaker.

Not a deal breaker. The gooseneck will pull much better than a bumper pull anyway. It's night and day when hauling

I will 2nd the gooseneck option, much more stable all around. And the load distribution makes it very managable. I have pulled with both, but prefer the gooseneck. The bumper pull is nice for smaller jobs.

Quick update. Ordered the truck tonight. Wound up going with a 2016 Ram 2500 Laramie with a Cummins and g56 in blue streak pearl coat. Few options here and there. Should take delivery in Alabama around the end of July. Sooooo stoked! :woot:
