Deulings 1985 K5 Blazer, --aka Borderline Obnoxious; Silver Lake pics and Vids

Those Pypes violators are just a glorified glass pack. They have stainless steel wool around a perforated tube, followed by glass packing material around that. They are just shaped like a normal muffler, with the glass pack tube going through at an angle. I was just looking at a set right out of the box on Saturday, a friend bought them for his Chevelle.

I have to admit though, I was surprised at the quality of that stainless exhaust system. 3/8" thick fully welded collector flanges, all mandrel bent. Excellent quality tig welded x-pipe. He even got the entire system polished, VERY nice.

Yes the only thing is they sound way better than any glasspacks I have heard, Idk its a tricky one I guess. Im gonna say its between a set of Flowmaster 40's and those Violators. Price is pretty close, the supertrapps would be sick, but are way to much for my budget.

I guess it depends on which ones you guys think will get me into the dunes easier. I like the sound both of them have.

A lot of it has to do with the tailpipe. A longer and/or smaller tailpipe will give you a more barky cracker sound too. That Chevelle probably had 3" pipes, which won't bark as much.

As far as which one will get you into silver lake either, if it's only between 40s, 50s, and violaters, I think it would be the 50 series. The 70 series will be even better for that, but they are more money.

So basically the only way to have that sound is bigger pipes, but it wont be good to run dual 3" like on this I wouldnt imagine. Hmmmm, I want it to be really loud, but no firecracker sound... dang

Check this out about the tailpipe effect. Go here...

Left side, click on exhaust sounds, then click on "all 13"

Now on the right side, under the playlist tab, scroll down and listen to the Aerochamber on the 32 Ford....

Then listen to the one that says, "Hooker Aerochamber Sound" (not mufflers). It will be a malibu with some VERY short tailpipes. It sounds a TON better in my opinion, unlike the barky crap out of that 32 Ford. Same muffler, different tailpipes. I am sure other stuff is different too, but based on the specs, I wouldn't be surprised if that 32 ford was an SBC.

If that's what you want, get the 40 series, you'll get exactly that, but they might give you some grief at silver lake.

Flowmasters... (keep in mind there is no load)

click on the "Flowmaster muffler shootout" right in the middle...

Ok that was pretty cool, I would say the original 40 is my favorite. Is their some type of damper tip anyone makes, like the supertrap muffler plates, but just something you could slip on with a clamp and wrench, then take it off once in the dunes?? Ima little crooked

Adam, I got some of these just for the purpose of getting around a db limit:

And the duplicolor engine paint I used on my engines is holding up real well, as long as you keep chemicals off it (carb cleaner)

So you put that inside the muffler?? Or can you just slip it into the tailpipe?? That would be cool to have something to pop on and off just to get into silver lake, then pop them off. Cheap would also be a key factor. BTW lol, I think Ive decided on the Violator Mufflers, they are just so narly and loud, I think they will be perfect for me hahah. My buddy has the flowmaster 40's on his f250, and I think they are too quiet

These things will really mellow out the tone of any engine I have used them a couple times

Plus you can pretty much put them in at anytime, just have to undo your collectors and weld em in.

I plan on using one in the tail pipe of my crew cab. Which will be a single 3" exhaust

Ok cool, Hey will this muffler work ok with that second exhaust system Heath posted up earlier, the inlet is offset and outlet is centered... And I would need to get reducers to 2.25 for the system cuz I cant find that system in 2.5, and I cant find those mufflers in 2.25......

You don't want 2.25" exhaust. You want 2.5" exhaust, or you will get that "firecracker" sound as you describe it.

Martin

heath I just finished putting the 2.25" kit I got from you on my dads k5. Not exactly just bolt on. But all in all I'm happy with the out come. PS those mufflers you had on there are way quiet. They do sound good under load but I expected it to be a little louder.

Hopefully it wasn't too much trouble, did you have plenty of pipe when switching to the K5 from the short bed? I know my collectors were probably longer. Hopefully you didn't have any issues going around the tcase or anything?

Did you end up running the tailpipes or just dump it?

And yeah, those mufflers are surprisingly quiet, especially at low RPM, considering they are so open inside. They do get pretty loud at WOT though I think. I hope you aren't dissapointed.

I cant seem to find an exhaust system setup like the ones heath posted above in 2.5 for this model truck, only 2.25... :dunno:

If you buy the big block Hooker super competition kit, it's 2.5". But the cost goes up quite a bit, and it will require more fab to install most likely since that's not what you have. But it would probably work.

Just have an exhaust shop fab you up a set of duals. Mine only cost me $200 on my Suburban.

Martin

Well the predicament is how do I bring it to a shop when I have the new engine in that has headers instead of manifolds, when the engines sitting in it ready for break in?? I would imagine having an exhaust is good for a break in.... Idk do you think they could fab it up if I brought the headers and mufflers??
