doubler people stop in i got a question ? UPDATE : found the noise 12/27/2020 !

crapy cell flip phone is all i got .

like i said its major marbles crunching around and faster you go worse it gets . and decel its got a SLAM of a gear end play bang .

i am about for sure its the 203 range box .

I've got my 203 apart sitting on kitchen counter (#bachelorlife) and can't see any way you can have any gear play in high range. The shift collar locks the input and output shafts together with no gears involved.

Gears still turn so grinding could happen, but no play

lower gear set in the 203 box have thrust washers for end play when the big pin goes in . thinking maybe one of them fell out / broke / who knows .

yep going to pull it monday am and see what i find .

just in case the old original np205 from behind this trans is ready to install . spend part of the day double checking it and modded the rail for full twin stick function since it already has a ord twin stick shifter on it .

Nice read, very thorough as always.

Just a thought... could the trans to 203 adapter bolts be too long? The lower bolts go right into the idler gear. Also the front bearing retainer bolts do the same.

When pulling those bolts look at the end for wear, may save you a bunch of labor looking for the grinding.

For the play, have you attempted driving in front wheel drive? That would eliminate any Detroit slop from the rear.

factory bolts for adapter to 203 range box and length verified .

seal retainer bolts same .

no 4wd test as the shift linkage never hooked up to the levers .

no detroit in the rear . and you can hear the SOLID SLAM from under the seat and middle floor area .

Slam on accel? slam on decel? slam on engaging into rev/drive? Slam on shifts?

just had a nice long talk with @Stephen at ord and we got a good game plan before i pull this unit for tear down .

talking with him and getting info from hm i had forgotten has gave me a good play to try .

1st = shifters in floor to let me test the system 100%
2nd = try low in 203 range box and see if noise ( marbles ) gets 2x faster .
3rd = try front wheel drive only for clunking test . if gone its in the rear end area . if there more thinking involved yet .
4th = remove rear shaft from the system to check for clunk still there in road test using front wheel drive .
5th = drain fluids and pull pto covers and check for major junk and also see if end play in gear set of 203 on lower shaft .
6th = possible refill with gear oil and re-test as atf has a lot less cushion in these units compared to atf i have in them now . yes they will work with both . but stephen said he has had less noise problems with gear oil over atf .
7th = total up results for next step plan of action.
