"Hardcore" 89 (Black and Blue). IT RUNS, DRIVES, AND STOPS. BUILD ON HOLD

Ok so I pulled the sliders off the truck so I can work on the add ons in the garage.

I am still unsure if I want to bolt these back on, or cut out my rockers and weld them in.

I am unsure of how to go about welding .250 to sheetmetal as well

The bolt in is simple and I rarely hit my sliders on anything.

The weld in gives me more clearance there and will probably protect my fancy new doors from stumps/trees/rocks.

What say you??

Sliders off

New additions as they will sit.

Cut a few pieces to brace it all up. Still need to trim the center one about 1/16.

Just have to clean everything up and one side is ready to weld.

Step bars are all .250 wall. The small brace pieces are .180 wall. Original sliders are .250 wall as well.

I know I am going to have to trim the bottom corners of the step bars and cap the hole still too.

Weld them in, clearance is king. Its not that hard to well thin to thick just have to get the settings right and practice a bit before you do it.

Try welding .250 to samurai sheet metal that will test you, Chevy stuff is alot thicker

I have cut out the rockers on a couple blazers and welded in thicker stuff. Its the bottom that will git ya every time

Well remind me to never weld on Sami sheetmetal then if Chevy stuff is a LOT thicker.

My half doors whipped my ass :haha:

Do you leave the back (inner) wall in of the rockers so there is a 90* left to stick the slider in?

I have done it a couple ways, a full vert is easier because of the rocker boxes.

On a half cab blazer I left the back panel in and welded to that. I saw that truck take a couple good hits on the rocker.

On one of the other blazers the back panel of the rocker was pretty much gone. So I took some thin square tube and some 12 gauge sheetmetal and made several braces for the back of the slider.

Welded the thicker sheetmetal to the floor, then cut the square tube ( it was pretty thin stuff like you can get at Lowes or Home Depot) cut the correct angles into them and welded it all up.

Those sliders survived many many many hits.

The key to welding the sliders onto the body on any truck is to make sure to spread the load out as far as possible so if you can leave the back panel of the rocker in I would do that.

Ok cool! My rockers are in good shape so there shouldnt be any issues there.

I am leaning towards welding them in. I guess I'll practice some then make the cuts.. No turning back then right :D

You just got to let the puddle sit on the thick stuff and it move it over close to the thin stuff, it will take just suck it right in,

The other thing I have done is cut a small groove into the slider material right where the weld will be. Only did this once though, with the groove I got more heat into the base metal though.

That's how I did it! It was pretty easy actually. I did 2" stitches or so to prevent warping the thin stuff. Keep the puddle on the thick wall stuff and just brush it up against the sheet metal every so often. You'll get the hang of it real quick. .25 wall = beef! :eek1:

Cool! Yeah I have some leftover sheet metal from my doors :wink1: I'll practice with that and some plate before I give it a whirl.

Hope I can get some time tonight to get the first one welded up or the other one ready to weld.

X3... And try to not point the wire at the thin stuff, it helps with blow threw...

The sliders look tits...

Still almost finished, but here are some pics.

All clamped in place

All welded up.

The ends overlap where the angle is so I'll have to cut them down and weld in a plate.

All cut to match the angle on the ends.

Got templates cut for the end caps. Just gotta cut them out and weld it up. Hopefully the second side goes faster LOL

While I was working I saw this little guy crawl across the floor.

What the hell was that thing? Are those common in WA.? Shoot, I wouldn't be workin on the floor. You could bbq that thing. Looks like a cammel spider. Damm!!

Nice sliders by the way!

Hell I dont know what kind, but he was big. I've never seen a spider that big up here!

Thanks. Hope to get it finished tomorrow and get started on the second one which will hopefully go faster.

Damn work, kids, sleep, life always getting in the way of my projects :doah:

Those sliders look good. I just ordered some from Kert and I got an idea from Muddytazz about some non-slip but I like your idea as well.

I'm not sure how non slip that step will be, but I won't be using it to get in and out anyway. I did plan ahead and make sure the gap between the two is NOT big enough for a boot to fall through :doah:

Sliders look good...

How was the camping trip???

Any updates on the next mod???:D

Thanks dude! It was good, but lots of work as usual LOL

I'm gonna call the guy today. Should be going down there on the 2nd or 3rd. :D

The diamond plate that I used on my steps seems to have some decent grip...

I think you'll be fine with those...

Cool. I just finished the first one minus paint.

Cutting the brace pieces for the other side now. I may bolt these back on and do the weld in to the body at a later point.

I hate pulling the truck in the garage and having it down for too long. I dont wanna miss a wheeling trip :doah:

Pics later tonight
