Has anyone machined a TH400/NP205 short adapter to mate with a 4L80 and D60 Question

so what would you like for the spacer material?

Easy. The bling bling of billets......6061-T6.

Yeah my camera doesn't take that great close-ups and its new! My old Sony that wrote to floppies did a better job.

I thought that was the holy grail of adapters you had! :D I use to have that same adapter. Without a spacer, I couldn't get it to accept my 203 on the 4L80 but maybe Greg can chime in again and explain how he did it.

As for material on spacers, I'd agree with Wes on 6061 but steel would be nice if you were on a budget. Can you do both metals or just one? Are you going to offer the spacers in different thicknesses?

i have a friend doing the work. he has lots and lots of blanks in steel the size of the spacer + a 1/2 " or so. easy to cut down and work faster.

but the 6061 is nice and also pricyy. if thats what you want it can be done.

and you tell me the spacing and i will have it cut to that no problems.

we should have this moved to the ceter of gravity for good keeping and tech info stuff. ?

I messed with this some more to see if it would be possible to make the spacer any narrower and 5/8 is the min. with the short adapter. You could make the spacer alittle bigger(3/4") and still have full spline contact(2") but 5/8" will be fine, let me throw something together this week thats 5/8 thick and check clearance.Heres some more pics with the transfer set how it will be in the truck(unclocked) and the mount on.The lip on the pan hit the mount some and can be ground alittle,I spaced it down 1/4" instead of grinding just for the picture but it would make removing the pan easier like the pic.
It doesnt look that way in these pictures but nothing is touching set at 5/8 gap!

i just priced online a 6" x 6" 6061 slug. thats not even the right soze dia but just a idea . and i got 125.00 before shipping?:eek1: :yikes: :1zhelp:

i might just do these from steel if you all dont mind. but if you want to pay the price for it then i can get them cut from 6061. i will try to find better price i hope.:o

Yeah, I guess steel would be the best. Do the bolts pass through the adapter or do they need to screw into it?

Good info on the short adapter MEK5! It will be nice to have some guidance for others that want to do this. The only thing we haven't covered are the options for the 203 for those who want to do a Doubler on the 4L80. I might call up Advance Adapters and see what it would take to install an Atlas II on the back just so all the t-cases are covered.

Still waiting on that part number from the guy that actually has it and the correct shaft. I did call Advance Adapters today and they gave me two part numbers. One number never came up on partdirect or my local dealer. The other GM part number that comes up is 24204289. I tried GMpartsdirect.com and it shows $111.22 for price plus $26 on shipping so its not something I want to take a chance on and get the wrong part. I then called my local dealer and gave them a 95 Fleetwood RV to look up but it came up with a different part number for the shaft and it was more money.

I found the RV shaft part # today,8661596 7 5/8 Long spline w/o o ring I forgot that I had a Transtar catalog.Called GM truck dealer and he couldnt find it listed,he checked something else and said it was discontinued in 03!
There is 5 different shafts listed with dims and thats the only one that said long spline all the others were short spline.
Dont know if these still can be found or not maybe aftermarket.I was really hoping to get one because there are no long LoMax inputs.
Im making a 5/8 spacer this week so will have some more pics this weekend and maybe another hook up method also.

Update:
Just got a PM from Richard on the 67-72 board and he did confirm its the GM part # I posted above.
Here's the PM I got from Richard:
The part # I have for the RV shaft is 24204289 I think it needs to be cut to something like a 2.5" stickout, dont rely on that though I would check the measurement.

Yeah, that 866 number is the other number Advance Adapters gave me but it didn't work. The correct number is 24204289.

BTW- Richard ended up with 2 4L80/205 adapters by mistake and he's selling one for $275 if anyone is interested. I assume its the long adapter but I will double check. Just PM if interested.

Excellent,I will call GM parts and see if its available and how much!
Thanks Man

the bolt pass threw it. it is just a spacer unit. just need longer metric bolts. i found allen socket heads best and easy clearence.

Heres an update on the spacer,5/8" spacing worked out great and the spacer was not hard to make if you have access to a lathe.Clearance with the pan/mount is tight but you could just shim it down alittle or grind the pan lip,I ground some in this picture and have 1 washer in there.Another option would be to make the spacer 3/4" but still would probably need to grind some. The 4L80 is 1 1/2" longer than the TH400 + spacer so you will need to address the shifter location and the floor cutout.
This is a easy swap for those with a 85 and up 400/205 because you dont have to swap inputs or machine your adapter plus cut an expensive transmission!

I have the Spacer required on file, if somone needs one from 6061-T6 I would be happy to do a batch, we have a 1991 4L80E / NP205 Combo on hand to reference. We will be manufacturing the factory reproduction adaptors late in the year. Shop line is 250 248 6024.

We are also manufacturing VSS tailhousing kits for the NP205 to complete the swap.

Oh I have no interest in making these for resale Jim,I made this one at work on an old lathe with sparse tooling. If I do though I got your addy:thumb:

How about alittle peek at that 91 4L80/205 adapter Kyle,I promise not to touch it:surepal:

Sure, I'll sandblast it and get some photos later in the day. We stumbled upon it by accident - you always find what you need when your not looking.
