Horton, driveshaft opinions wanted

So I don't understand what you mean by linking the rear with leafs? 1/4 elliptical?
I can't wait to get going on mine again.

Shackles on both ends of the spring,

What Gus said David. Going to link the rear and use the leafs as springs. 2 reasons for this, I don't gain much clearance by linking it and going coils because I like the Horton looks right now. So that means not cutting the back any shorter, the bedsides will remain. Leafs springs are more stable on sidehills for many reasons, most of which make them not as good as coils.

So yah shackles on both ends of the springs, it will eliminate axle wrap allow me to control the suspension a bit more and still give me some stability.

I am going to link the front first though.

I love your rig so much.... one day I'll be there. I need to get a tow rig and get serious.

Links/ leafs seem to be best of both worlds, except for ease of ride height adjustment, but stability beats that all day. Will be watching to see how you go about it

Thanks much Chris. It took a while to get there myself, still not even close to done.

Of course I did miss the whole streetable truck thing so much that I bought another Jimmy to drive around

I've never heard of that before (not really a surprise there), is it common or something you are experimenting with?

Are you gonna 4 link the front this winter?

Linking with leaves is not very common at all but certainly not the first time it has been done.

I intend to research quite a lot about suspension dynamics of leaf springs how they can be predicted and how those parameters can translate to a coil spring or coil over.

Not sure about when it will all happen I have about 3 major things I need to do before I get to it. Hopefully this winter though. We shall see

how come you let the Saints get beat today?????

Nice wheelin pics Eric, that explains why you RR tire is buried next to that rock too, you slid there.

Anyway here are some cool pics from today

This is awesome!

Can I make I pic request on how you have your shocks setup in the rear? I looked through the pictures you sent me and I can't really see em. I really do not want to inboard them. Your gas tank placement is almost identical to mine. I may just have to cut my fancy ubolt plates I got from kert to make clearance. Also what shocks are you using in the rear?

thanks

I will get some today Jess. they are inboarded, I will take some pics of what we did before when they weren't, Inboarding was the only way to go and get the max travel out of the leaves.

We had them mounted just out side the frame before and the shock was limiting down travel. So inboarding was the easiest fix,

Shocks are 14" travel rancho 9000s

I agree with this Jess, I inboarded too, because it just didn't seem to get enough travel with the stock location. Although I am no where near the travel Eric has, at least the shocks aren't my limiting factor.

I think I may rig up a way to swap them around. I have plenty of steel laying around so that wont cost me anything. Its just when you inboard them you loose effective dampening. Shocks are designed to be as close to perpendicular to the axle as possible. It would be nice to have a switchable setup for higher speed dune running ect.

Here ya go Jess

Here is a pic of how they used to mount, this way I needed a 16" travel shock, the uptravel was fine but down was not enough

I really liked them the first way. But as I said I needed a 16" travel shock and didn't have the funds to pony up for some. When I change the suspension around I will pony up for good shocks and will do them outboard of the frame, more than likely on top of the housing to my cage

So long ago when I cut the cab off I had plans to do something with the dash.

I broke the blower motor housing so it hasn't worked for a couple years. The AC never worked.

So since Russel has so kindly invited me to go to KOH and since he has an aversion to letting anyone touch Penny ( the white Tahoe) I suggested we take Horton, to which he agreed. :woot::woot:

Horton needs some TLC and the dash was actually pretty high on this list because of the rearranging a very rude rock did.

So here is my start

Right now this is a low cost type of situation so the stock gauge cluster will stay for now. But I wanted to get rid of the rest of the dash. Solution :hack:

And I am left with this

I still need to disconnect the heater hoses ( whats not broke ya know) but I needed something to loop them together to lose as little coolant as possible and I couldn't find anything.

So tomorrow I should be down to just about bare metal where all the HVAC stuff is now.

Plan is a couple of ammo cans, a place to mount the cb, some other small storage, make a cover for the cluster, and see where it takes me. :D
