Horton, driveshaft opinions wanted

Nice work Eric, I like that you are cutting weight and keeping the Chevy look.

I am actually going to add back in front turn signals too. My taillights work and other than bumper/fender/mudflap violations I am legal to run in Idaho.

Oh wait I don't have windshield wipers anymore. So I am sure I would get pulled over if passed by a trooper for the most part they can't issue me a citation that involved a moving violation nor can they technically tell me I can't drive the vehicle

This is something I was going to ask you about. I have a similar rig and it is street legal in Arkansas other than windshield wipers, which I find odd because it is not required that you have a windshield:dunno:

I couldnt even find any information about tire coverage/mudflaps so I assume that I dont need them. IF I ever drive it through town I will throw some on just in case. My house is about 45 miles from my father in-laws house who lives next door to an offroad park and national forest with hundres of miles of trails. I usually leave my rig parked at his house and drive to the trails unless it needs major repair.

Same in Idaho windshield wipers required but no windshield required. My biggest hang ups with driving on the street are bumpers, fender flares, and mudflaps.

In Idaho I need to cover the tires up which I could do easy without much cost, but the bumpers according to the law are supposed to extend the full width of the original bumper and be at least 4" tall, other than that the fact that the body is narrowed at least in Idaho has no bearing on me being legal or not, its the bumpers, fender flares, and mudflaps.

Oh yah I need a rear veiw mirror too:D

Okay so Keith and Matt ( kgblazerfive and boondock5 respectively) cruised up here to give me a hand and to bring me a twinkie

Horton orginally started as a k10 silverado truck, all the options AC, cruise, PW, PL etc etc etc. Hence the wiring was quite extensive. Well young Matt happens to rewire C-130s ( currently) for a living. So I thought he may be able to give me a hand figuring things out.

Matt had a great idea to pull the harness out of a bare bones 89 blazer I have ( body is good) still a TBI motor so all that should be fine. Certainly no bolt in as they changed a couple of key things at the bulk head connector. But we got the harness in and changed and Horton started

Here is a pic of the CK5 braintrust :haha::haha::haha::haha::haha:

Now onto the funny story of the weekend

I was originally going to keep my stock gauges because well I don't have the money to really get new gauges, well Keith generously offered to put me on the blazer deferred trade payment plan ( of which no details were offered so I would imagine it will cost me much :D) for some auto gage gauges of which he is pretty sure he only has 3 or 4 sets.

So for once I got to be the recieving end of the instigation, usually I am the one that is saying oh just cut that out you will be fine, in this case it was Matt, Keith, and my buddy Jon saying that to me.

So the dash went from this

To this being that I am going to have some gauges now

Not done yet of course but it will be this week. Some cool stuff still to come on the dash and hopefully this week some gauges in there too.

In order for Matt to read this

Thank you Keith and Matt

For talking me out of what was going to be a stupid looking dash, helping with wiring and of course bringing me the twinkie :haha::haha:

I like your dash, when I get around to doing the same thing you are I planned on something similar.

What is going on the passenger side though?

Haven't quite got that figured out yet, some type of glove box. For small stuff, its certainly not the most functional on the passenger side but its cool looking. :D

Yet another thing I may copy from you. That is if the wife allows me to spend a few hundred on gagues :)

it is looking cool Eric...interested to see the turnout of this.

Kert and Ion both are Autometer distributors.

Background, took my wiring harness out of my 87 (Horton started as an 87 pickup) and put in a wiring harness from an 89 blazer I had kicking around.

The goal was to clean up wires, 87 harness was a fully loaded truck and hacked by PO, 89 wiring harness has never been touched and was a stripped down truck.

So these two wires brown with a black strip ( or possibly tan with a black stripe)

The only other wire I can find is this ( this is the original engine harness) Same colors

Book I have says that the brown with black stripe is spark control. but this wire does not go to the computer at all.

Anyone got better wiring diagrams for an 87 pickup and a 89 Blazer, better than the haynes one I have at least.

And no the harnesses are not the same the bulkhead connector is different

My Haynes Manual is for 1967 to 1987. I states on page 1 of 2 that one Tan/Black goes from the ECM to the automatic transmission and another goes from the ECM to the distributor. On page 2 of 2 it states a Tan/Black goes from the ECM to the Electronic Spark Timing.

Eric,
I can take a look tomorrow, and text pictures if needed. I have the same setup as you an 89 blazer wiring harnes in my 83 pickup. If I remember correctly the windshield wiper motor/ pump has a brown/tan wire.
