Lost...Positraction and Open Carriers

The thing is...why do you want a spool when you're NOT at low speed? I suppose for drag racing or mud bogs, but you would lock it in before you start. I just can't see the logic in running through snow drifts at 45MPH and flipping the switch. Some factory applications won't even engage the locker unless you're in 4L. For sure, I've turned mine on and off at low speeds many times with no noise or issues. Of course, I'm going straight at that point.

But logically, the differential has no idea if the vehicle is going 0 or 100. The only thing that matters to it is the difference in speed from one side to the other. For sure, dropping in a mud hole, shooting a one-wheel rooster and flipping the switch is a bad idea.

I think for me it's just I don't like scrubbing the tires when I don't need to, and on ice having the rear open is beneficial in certain cases. I tend to cover a lot of ground, in snow then out of snow, in mud then out of mud, etc. Sometimes I don't see it coming. Driving a manual, the stopping and starting is something I try to avoid. Like most everything it's personal preference. I understand that.

I mean I could leave it locked, it wouldn't be the end of the world, but this is why I like the gov-lock, as I don't need to do anything about it.

Not gonna lie, for the price of the 10 bolt tru-trac I was seriously close to getting one for the 14b in my truck. The only issue was the 14b version that is on sale is the 4.56 and up carrier. The 4.10 and down version was still $900+.

I don’t need to be ordering one but at three hundred I would have.

You guys are getting a SMOKING deal at that price. Great find Ray!

"Only engage the Eaton ELocker™ differential while the vehicle is stationary or operating at speeds of 3 mph
or less with minimal wheel slippage. Engaging the Eaton ELocker™ while the wheel is spinning at a high rate or the
vehicle is moving at more that 3 mph may damage the differential’s engagement pins or lock collar will be considered
improper or abnormal use voiding the warranty."

Like I said, if you’re spinning one wheel you don’t want to drop the switch. That’s why govlocks explode. The only reason they say under 3 miles an hour is to CTA. People are stupid. Same as the hot coffee disclaimers. Everyone I know and wheel with either has elockers or airlockers and you can turn them on and off whenever you want out on the trail.

It means somebody had one and blew it up like that, so they had to update the terms. I remember buying a serpentine belt that had "do not attempt to change belt with engine running" printed on the sleeve, which must have quite a story behind it.

Can we please REMOVE all the warning labels? Society needs a massive cleansing.

Preach it!
You know most warning labels have a lawsuit behind them...
My favorite is "Do not use running mower as a hedge trimmer"...

Thanks. I tried to find a cheap 30 spline, but they were all $600+...
I'm thinking I should have bought 2 of them...

You'll want new ring gear bolts and some blue lock tight. I warmed my ring gear up in the AZ July sun, need leather glove to pic it up. dropped right on carrier. Some people will use a toaster oven. The new carrier will need to have the matting flange flat filed for burrs and cleaned of mfr oils/dirt. Ring gear should touched up with a flat file, and cleaned mating surface. Bolt holes and threads too.
Do leave the pinion alone in the housing. Unless there is a problem with it. If you are changing the pinion seal get a crush sleeve eliminator https://www.amazon.com/Yukon-Gear-SK-CSGM8-5-Differential/dp/B0078UC2AG?th=1 simple to do if no bearing change, and easier than reusing a crush sleeve, for the novice gear guy.
If you reuse the existing carrier bearing then the only adjustment will be for the minor tolerances in manufacturing. They should be very minor. I recommend ordering a carrier bearing shim kit, from Yukon or similar. This way you will have some shims to choose from when doing the work and not have to wait if your current shims are enough to get the back lash and pattern. https://www.amazon.com/Yukon-Gear-SK-SS10-Carrier/dp/B0078U8CLE/ref=sr_1_1?crid=EL36OX51UR79&keywords=gm+8.5"+carrier+bearing+shim+kit&qid=1695970526&sprefix=gm+8.5+carrier+bearing+shim+kit,aps,122&sr=8-1&th=1
Recommend lube locker cover gasket
Might seem overwhelming, but there are more then a few gear guys here that are willing to help, with tip and answers, being premium members makes so we can do pictures.
Is this what I need?

Linky in my previous post. But it sets the preload on the pinion bearings. The crush sleeve is supposed to be a one time use tensioner. Is a piece of tube you bend as you carefully tighten down the pinion nut. The eliminator kit uses shims to do the same thing. Can be reused, and torque down the pinion to spec no worries.

I have a built 10 bolt front that i think im going to part out. It has an elocker that is posi when off and spool when on. Has 3k street miles a 1 trip to moab and colorado on it. I would let it go for 750 shipped

Idk, but, I did some snooping and found a killer deal. 28 spline truetrac, $215!! I may buy one myself...just set it on the shelf for future use.

thanks Ray, I ordered one for a 9.5SF rear end for a build that I may or may not do. I looked last night and it wasn't on sale; got on this morning and the page refreshed itself and it was. :pimp1:

Glad to be of service Brothers. I'm keeping an eye on it, I could use both a 9.5 and a D44.
