Lost...Positraction and Open Carriers

Glad to be of service Brothers. I'm keeping an eye on it, I could use both a 9.5 and a D44.
I have a feeling they will cancel my order, especially with my kind of luck

Do I need a shim driver tool? Also for some reason I’m tempted to change out the pinion seal but I feel like I’m asking for problems. Not sure if my seal is bad. I have the carrier out. Is there anyway to check?

If your pinion seal is bad, you’ll have oil leaking and slinging all over.

Ok got it, I didn’t notice anything before and had plenty of fluid still in the case before I emptied it. What about the shim driver?

I don’t have one, and I’ve done dozens of gear jobs. When I do carriers with external shims, I put the thickest shims on the outsides of the stacks. I like using the handle end of my hammer to tap it in.

You don't need one, but they're nice to have.
I had one i made out of 3/16 plexiglass on my laser at work years ago.

As I mentioned earlier I did my first years ago, jumped into it cold. Only special tools I had were a couple of torque wrenches.

The bolt for the diff shaft broke off to start with. Spent a week using an air hammer to work it back and forth until the bolt shattered. Didn't know at the time there was a kit to deal with that.
Neighbors loved the noise lol!

It was easy peasy afterwards. I plan on regearing my burb when the locker gets in.
I broke down and bought a case spreader years ago. Just because I came across a killer deal.

At the time I did mine, my boss had a monster race truck. He coached me through it. He had a stand he had made, holds the axle up waist high so I didn't have to wrestle on the ground with it.
Made a huge difference.

You got this bruh. We all got your back.

Mine hasn't shipped yet.... :-(

The 8.5" truetrac, the $215 one i posted.
It says rear only, but I don't see why it wouldn't work up front.
I have a matching Detroit locker that works at either end....

Actually, there is a difference. The gears are cut opposite. It's about which side of the housing takes the wear. Possibly on something that doesn't see much 4WD time, it doesn't matter much. We had a discussion here recently.

Yes, the cut effects bias ratio by the way the gears are cut and installed in a front or rear application.

BIGRAY - The good news is that if ya wanted to put it up front all that is needed is to rearrange the orientation of the gears and all is well and let it ride.

Alright I torqued the rear gear to the carrier with Loctite to 87#. The manual says 80, online says 89. I decided to settle on 87

I’ll place into the housing and start the shim process. How much lash should I have? I think the pinion hasn’t been touched from the factory. I don’t think it’s leaking, so I’ll leave it alone for now.

Call me stupid but I used a race press and a hammer (don’t have a hydraulic press) to get the bearings on the trutrac. Bearings are fine and unharmed. However I can’t get them all the way inwards, towards the unit housing. The bearings are only flush with the outside race edges (the tool is flat faced). Do I need to put them on a little more?

First two pics is the Trutrac. Second is the factory.

You will have to press the side bearings in more. There will be a tiny amount of material sticking past the bearing kinda like the way the second picture shows on the original carrier
If you look under the bearing on the carrier and see some light between the two, then it needs more depth. the bearing will sit flush with the housing on the bottom side.
This is assuming that the correct side bearings were used that Truetrac calls for, and not the OEM bearings
BTW, i ordered the exact same Truetrac from Justdifferentials on Sept. 29, for another project, and still havn't received it ("Order Delayed").......consider yourself lucky

Thanks, can’t imagine it would call for different bearings but I’ll check the manual.

You will NOT get that differential from them if you bought in the 200 range. I called and they made a mistake and then took 2weeks to refund me. Clowns.

I bought off Amazon.

Well, that makes sense, I guess I have to make some calls......wonder if anybody else was able to get them for $215

This is straight from Eaton.
I've done lots of gear installs, and many Truetracs as well. I remembered they require "special" bearings
Food for thought, but here are the part numbers
