This is what happens when you go adventuring in a hurricane
I know, I know, never go wheeling alone.
Anyways, I am contemplating the idea of getting a winch in the recent future. I will definitely be getting a 24v. I was daydreaming of mounting it similarly to a receiver hitch winch setup, but instead using my shackle mounts. This would give me 4 mounting point options. Does this sound secure? The army picked these things up with cranes by these hooks. I would replace the bolts with fresh grade 8 hardware if I were to go this route. I have seen some examples of people on steel soldiers doing this, but some people over there also weld winch mounts to the cucv brush guards, which just doesn't seem like the brightest idea.
I think you should fabricate your own "hidden" mount behind the bumper between the frame rails and mount the fairlead where the front license plate would go. Of course that would mean cutting a hole in the bumper but I think it would be really cool.
And get a Warn winch. Don't even waste your time with anything else. I would even take a used Warn over a new foreign-made model any day.
I like the hidden winch idea so you can keep the CUCV bumper and grill guard. With that you are also not relying on a single frame rail to pull from which could potentially twist the frame. Center mounted winch ties into both frame rails and pulls both. When they were used as lift points they were lifting from all 4 points.
I definitely like the behind the bumper idea as well. I started taking a welding class this fall so I would feel comfortable fabricating something with stick. I would like to make something similar to the TNA mount, but preserve the bumper and grille guard.
That is the winch I have been dreaming of. The downside is it does not come with line. Most winches come with steel line and from what I have read synthetic is the way to go. If I buy a winch I want to buy it once and be done. I would probably splurge for new so that I could always maintain it. I also never see used 24v winches.
Oh and the truck is still there. I left a note, but I really doubt anyone is going to wander upon it. My friend has a Bronco on one tons and 38s and were going to try to fetch it out Friday. Hopefully it dries up a bit. Everything was so mucky I was sinking up to my knees. Digging was useless. You can't see, because they all sunk, but my friends and I dragged rocks from all over to put under the tires for about 3 hours and they just sunk into the bottomless goo. I was re-watching the top gear where Clarkson climbs the mountain in Scotland with a Discovery and cursing him and his winch anchor as he went right through peat bogs.
None that I know of yet. I drove it the 30 miles home. I half wanted to call AAA and get a free tow, but it seemed ok. I'm going to drain every fluid this weekend. The water level was definitely up to the t-case and over the axels.
Go ahead and change your transmission oil and transfer case fluid and your engine oil too. I don't think there's much chance that any water got in there but you never know. The Blazer was out in there for a while. It's probably time to change all that stuff anyway right?
