M1009 Standard Shift Build(The Greatest Adventure)

I have debated a little bit about adding this into my build thread, but I think it's the right spot.

Some of you guys know I'm big into skiing. Well, every year since college my friends and I have rented a cheap condo to ski out of for the winter. We all had previously lived at home. Now, with people growing up and moving out/ in with girlfriends etc. we no longer have the cash collectively.

Last spring I sold my landscape trailer and picked up an old chariot motorcycle trailer in need of some repairs. I fixed it up as much as I could in the weeks prior to my trip this summer and lived out of it for about 5 weeks with my dog.

Now the challenge is going to be to turn it into my mobile ski home :pimp:

The lift was accomplished by installing a new torsion axle with a downward angle. It is a 6 lug axle so I only have to carry one spare. The axle has provisions for an e-brake and trailer brakes, but they are not hooked up yet.

I can attest to the cool factor on this thing. Rich, get some inside pics up!

Please tell me the "inside" pics are not of the 2 of you :D

Rich, I dig the trailer :waytogo: what about a small propane heater at least as a back up deal, like one of those Mr. Heater tent heaters ?

I'm feeling it. I wonder if it would look good with a paint job to match the Blazer.

I thought about that at first, but the army paint is really hard to match. I also thought the darker the color the hotter it would get, and that is why I left the roof white. I actually like the tan behind the blazer and think it complements it well. I'm not crazy into army stuff, but I think it at least looks a little desert stormy.

I am a little worried about killing myself in my tiny little box. I also think my truck burns diesel so efficiently at idle it's not a big deal to run it if it gets cold.

My plan is run the heat on the drive to the mountain with the heat on and it'll be all warm to sleep in. I think me plus a friend are definitely enough body heat to hold temp through the night.

Alright just made a wheel change decision.

I have five of these in the vw right now!

Just need some inner air locks, and green spray paint! Then I'll be mounting up the mtrs!

And the special lugnuts...and washers. Ask zim about this.

They do take a special shank style lug nut and washer. Kind of a pain in the ass to deal with but, good looking wheels. Does the new rear axle use larger wheel studs than the front? You may want to make sure they offer that lug nut in that size and make sure it will fit the id of the lug holes in the new wheels.

As long as the new wheels work they will look good. But I did like the look of the black steelies with the camo truck.

And the trailer, nice stabbin' cabin.

I liked them a lot too, but It will make my life a lot easier to mount up new wheels and sell my old stuff all mounted up. This way I can get them all ready and just bolt them up.

The challenge with the aluminum wheels will be getting them drilled up for the inner air locks extra valve. I have a good machine shop I deal with that seems to enjoy the more creative things I bring in so the only question will be $$.

If the studs don't work out I can hopefully find some new ones to pop in.

I'd rather have the larger studs, especially on the rear with only 6 of them. It's unlikely you'd ever have a problem but I have seen situations where studs have snapped right off on the trail. Non- hub centric wheels may have played a part in that coupled with incredibly off camber side loading. Like wheeling up a V notch. Don't let a wheel choice dictate smaller lug studs.

Speaking of hub centric, make sure those new wheels fit over the larger rear hubs on the 14bsf.

The rear hubs on my sf are really small. My current wheels don't sit on them. Is this a problem. :dunno:

If these wheels turn out not to work right I'm sure I can get my money back out of them. I jumped on them, because there were 5 and I have always really liked the style.

I snapped the driver rear studs off my Camaro when I was 18 about 5 houses away from my house. It was fun waiting in the middle of the road with no wheel on for AAA to come drag me back into my driveway. :doah:

I went with 3" ARP studs front and rear. My wheels aren't going anywhere!
If you want I can dig up the part numbers for you.

Yes please :thumb:

I hope you can change those rear studs with the axle shafts in.
