May Have Pissed Somebody Off

Probably disturbed the fuel pump ground some how.

Martin

Or someone squirt something in through the hole to mix with the gas in a bad way. Maybe why they didn’t drill in the bottom to just drain it out.

Obviously I'm hoping that Martin is right! Before I found the hole, I drove the truck from my house toward the vet. I went about a mile before pulling off the highway and into the gas station. I then drove it home and parked it in the garage. I say all this just to say that it was "running fine", but if someone put something into the tank then I am sure that trip just pulled it into the lines.

Any chance its the people from the house you parked in front of?

I don't think so. I parked in between two people's homes. The guy on the left side has a doorbell camera, so I knocked on his door and chatted with him about it. He actually reviewed the footage to see if he could find any clues for me. He came back and said that only one person on foot was visible overnight at it was at like 4:30 in the morning. They walked in front of his house but you can't make anything out (e.g. he couldn't tell whether they were even holding anything or not). Plenty of cars drove by throughout the night so it could have been one of those people as well. The house on the right is basically dead quiet... I've only met them once and they were polite people at the time.

What's so frustrating about this is that it really does seem like vandalism at this point and I have no idea who I could have upset. I try to be a nice enough person and I don't recall getting into it with anybody at ALL! On top of that, if there really is something in the tank/lines, then this is going to be a tough repair for me to get through. Don't mean to be all "woe is me" but damn I'm real frustrated.

Hoping to make more progress on it tonight. One huge plus is that it is so warm in Denver this week!

Its time to call the FBI. they obviously intended to only let enough gas out of the vehicle to create a trail down the road that they could light like a fuse (just like on Die Hard) so they could blow up your truck and watch from their rear view as the were speeding away... they left 1/2 the gas in the tank as the perfect eco-terrorist bomb. the gas trail must not have ignited well with their bic lighter because it was probably out of butane from all the weed and crack pipe duty it had been pulling - also it was cold and wet outside and they were still angry about Hillary not getting the nomination.

someone needs to do something.

but in all seriousness- this kind of thing has me worried. we don't prosecute people here in CA. No deterrents for criminal behavior now. we tell them its not their fault and send them on their way. I think criminals laugh all the way to the bank for quite a while, but, later end up believing that story line... then in their mind everybody OWES them... so its YOUR fault for working and buying that gas and having sooo much of it in your tank when nobody GAVE THEM gas...

and its MY fault for having expensive catalytic converters under my truck (that were forced upon me by a non elected committee), and its obviously the criminal's right to take them from under my truck- matter of fact, THANK YOU CRIMINALS! THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME REALIZE HOW WRONG I WAS FOR TRYING TO WORK AND LIVE WITHOUT FIRST SUPPORTING YOU!

You don’t have to have done anything wrong and the person who did it may not even know you. Could be someone who hates big evil trucks or could be teenage vandals just out causing trouble.

Yeah tree hugger doesn't like your gas guzzler.

You could remove the fuel filter, put a rubber hose on tank side, into a container and run you pump. See if the gas looks contaminated.
Also you could drain most of the contaminated gas out this way.
Be sure to ground the container to the truck. Esp if you try to filter it with felt. Keep a fire extinguisher around.

You guys are right, it could have just been random. I need to stop feeling sorry for myself and just get this s*** done.

Wes, thanks for the suggestion. That will help me ensure the pump is working properly as well. I was worried that the pump is all gummed up.

You'll need to use the test wire near the relay for continuous run of the fuel pump.
Turn of the key, a couple on offs, will get you your sample for inspection.

or just keeping feeling sorry for yourself until you get all worked up and something on the side of your head pops... that's MY plan.

Ok, without going back through the speculation of who did what and why, let’s get down to what it’s doing right now.

Cranking but not starting? Not cranking at all?

It drove into the garage under its own power but now it don’t run. You didn’t touch anything other than dropping the skid plate to patch the tank right?

Dumb question. Have you tried tapping on the bottom of the tank with a rubber mallet or the side of your fist? Sometimes you’ll have a fuel pump stop at a spot where the windings are dead and it can’t start spinning when power is applied. Tapping or banging on the tank sometimes wiggles the pump to get that armature to move enough it starts working again.

Worth a try. But depending on what is going on we can figure it out. I can help if you need it since I’m not currently employed.

This crossed my mind too. Since the fuel actually is cooling the pump, it running almost being out of gas could lead to a problem. I can think of a couple times where pumps died just after running out of fuel or wouldn't restart after coasting in on fumes. More anecdotal here but it does seem to happen.

Thanks for the response Zoo!

It's cranking but won't start. I filmed a short video with my phone right at the throttle plate to verify that no fuel was coming from the injectors while I was cranking.

It's true, it drove into the garage on its own. I did not mess with anything other than the skid plate (which included removal of the rear bumper and tow bar). The only electrical component that I removed was the trailer plug. When trying to remove the ground for the trailer plug, I did snap the bolt that was grounding it to the bumper. I then had to drill out the old bolt and replace it with a new (larger) one. I did my best to clean the contact points before reinstalling. I know this wouldn't be related unless the trailer plug and the fuel pump shared a ground. I doubt they do but perhaps it is possible... just need to take a closer look at the setup tonight.

No sir, I haven't made any progress on it since my last post. I was planning to dig into Wes' suggestion next, but I'll absolutely try tapping it first. The skid plate is already reinstalled... do you think it will work just as well if I tap the tank on the side as opposed to the bottom?

I seriously appreciate you offering to help out man. Even if my Blazer wasn't down right now I'd want to get together anyway once you got back from the desert... gotta drink a few Coors and shoot the s***!

have you done this yet? When my plastic baffle tray broke off and took my fuel pump off its mount... I ran through all of this and
-checked fuses
-checked fuel pump ground
-checked the fuel pump was getting power

did you have the battery connected while taking bumper off and pulling apart trailer wiring? maybe a fuse blew while all the disconnecting and reconnecting??

Yeah banging on the skid with a rubber mallet might jiggle it enough.

It’s going to be crappy this weekend but if the truck is in garage it wouldn’t be an issue to fiddle with it.

I have hammered many a tank, with a large dead blow in hopes of restarting a bit fuel pump @50% success rate. These were known bad pumps.

The hard part is, it could all be totally coincidental. Something might have failed and it had nothing to do with the hole in the tank issue.

I say the first thing you should do is track down the ground wire coming off the top of the tank.

Ground wire for the trailer is probably it. Mine was similar

Ground wire for my ‘91 is on the driver side frame rails out mid way down the tank. But who knows what some previous owner did.

The butchery I’ve seen of people installing trailer wiring I wouldn’t be surprised to see somebody hack the fuel pump ground.

My 90 is the same spot.
