I have been searching for the same info... I had heard about a dodge chain or something and figured if I'm going to be rebuilding this one I'd like to do that.

NP208 strength? (Now 241 ugrade and rebuild)

I did it on my 75 stepside , I used a 32 -spline input from a GMT400 241 and put in a 89 ramcharger case . After that we reassembled the GMT400 case with the dodge input and put it in a 95 dodge a few years later
So I could take my 27 spline input 241 from the back of my 700 swamp the input from it to the dodge case and boom done? Flanges for the front are the same?
Yes and maybe. Been awhile since I looked at outputs but thought they were the same
Bearings etc are same size despite the shafts being different spline count?
What about stronger chain..... Not sure if it's needed but I did hear an urban legend that there's a dodge 241 with a beefier chain that can be swapped. But every lead I've run down has no real info. Just people saying it can be done and nothing about how or what years etc.
There is a Dodge 241HD , but they came in drivers drop only and no parts are compatible with the other 241's ( with exception to maybe a bearing our two or maybe shift forks and what not the Chain, gears , and planetary are specific to it alone.
For me it was a direct swap , for the flanges I bought some 1350 flanges and used super duty shafts .
If I was too do it over again though I would have just used the GMT400 case and used a high pinion ford 44 with Chevy outers .

32. Think I may re weld it and see how it goes. I'm thinking of a multi pass build up of the whole area. Planned on getting a spool gun for my Lincoln anyway.. this just gives me a reason lol. Maybe 205s ARE the way to go lol.
I plan on mid to mild wheeling really. Not massive rock bashing crazy chit. Who knows what the future brings. So I guess I'll make do for now.... The 208 should be fine till I get a tow rig and trailer... Be at least a year for that
With all this talk of 241's being stronger - what is stronger than a 208? They're practically the same thing. They share some parts, even the chain, which is sometimes said to be the weak link.
Are you just chasing beef for the fun of chasing beef? Or are you actually worried about breaking this?
I hate been stuck in the middle of nowhere and refuse to be stranded with my family if at all possible. I'm trying to eliminate all possible known weak links is all. I've always heard the 208 is a weak link. So just trying to eliminate it. Even at the beginning of this i was pretty much told "take it easy and it'll be ok".,.. telling me it IS a weak link. Plus I want to eliminate the slip yoke.
The 205 is strong. But I need a refresher or something in operating it. The last few i had I had an issue with grinding gears trying to shift it. Something dad never got a chance to show me.
I've only gotten myself stuck to the point of being pulled out once ever. But I have broken things and walked a long ways in crappy conditions before. Just trying to prevent having to do that with a 2 year old

I understand the desire for reliability. I just think that the transfer case has a fairly low risk of breaking, and an even lower chance of wearing out. I'd be looking at higher risk items like the transmission & engine.
Tell me again why you are ditching the reliable stick shift for a finicky automatic?
Im one of the few who can't stand stick in 4x4. And it's a family wheeler that I'd like the wife to be able to drive and Kaz too at some point. I'll have to put up with that one weak link I guess lol.
