Old Iron 2.0

So I fixed the belt and upper rad hose within an hour or so of the incident happening.

I've been driving the truck all over town today and my kids love it, other drivers not so much... the K5 billows smoke like no other.

It drives likea dream too minus the stiff ass suspension.

So, how come you did not paint the oil pan ?
I just wanted to get the seal on there and get it back on the road.

I hit it with the pressure washer at the car wash and it knocked a lot of the crud off, if I would have taken more time I'm sure I could get everything off.

Paint isn't a big deal to me.

Been driving the K5 everyday now, I get some weird looks with my homebrew half-done half doors that don't match the rest of the truck lol.

It seems to be smoking less and less the more I drive it, I'm going to assume that the Restore is working a little bit, I think I'm gonna run a thicker weight oil when I do the next oil change soon.

I have a small leak at the front of the oil pan where it meets the bottom of the timing chain cover... I didn't have a good way to clean off the RTV that the P.O. gooped on in that area resulting in a bad seal for me. Not really concerned with it, at least I know where it is. I want to say the RMS is leaking too but it's only a drop here and there so it's not a big concern either.

It drives good, still haven't messed with timing or A/F ratio screws yet, might tinker around with everything this weekend.

In August I plan on purchasing DIY4X Shackle Flip and front shackle hanger.

I've had both the B52's and the A-Bomb and I'm not sure which route I want to go, I'm going to call Kert and talk to him a little bit before I make my final decision. I want to make sure that I can utilize the full 2" forward out of the 52" springs. I've been trying to come up with a design for a hidden winch mount that sits between the frame rails and has the winch mounted feet forward and haven't really come up with anything that'll work due to space restraints.

Here is my old '79 K5 Cheyenne. I had the shackle flip, 6" cross tied shackles, shackle hanger, 6" shackle sides, A-Bomb, 52's up front, 56's rear, 1 tons and some 8 lug dodge wheels that rubbed the TRE's on the D60 knuckles.

I'm shooting for something similiar on this K5.

Pretty sure I have some bad cam lobes in the smoking engine... I retarded, advanced and drove the truck for about an hour today, stopping frequently and adjusting the timing. No wires are crossed, correct firing order verifi ed.

I get a popping sound out of the exhaust when I ham on the gas, it's not very loud at first but if I stay on the gas it becomes more pronounced and my acceleration is pretty much at a stand still until I let off the gas and ease back into the pedal.

I was going to drop my 355 in that's on the engine stand but I planned on a serpentine setup and some other things that I wanted to put on the engine before it went in and buying that stuff right now is gonna cut into my funds for the suspension (August's hobby funds) so I've been tossing around the idea of an LS engine swap just because it was on the list later on down the road anyway. I can make some decent coin on all my SBC stuff especially if I pull all my stuff off of the smoking engine and put it on the 355 and sell as a complete engine.

I'm looking into the 4.8L (LR4) LS1. They're pretty cheap with everyone going after the 5.3 and bigger engines.

I'll be free of carburetor problems, rejetting (moving back to Colorado the 1st quarter of next year), elevation problems, fuel bowl flooding, timing issues etc. etc.

I was reading a thread on here earlier of a guy with a 4.8L LS swapped in with a 465/205 and he was getting 18-19 MPG on the highway, If I remember correctly he had 3.73's and 33's. So I could look forward to better gas mileage (something I've never had), even better than my '09 Rubicon.

Been looking at the Tilden Motorsports engine packages through Tilden and Pacific Fabrication. Baseline is $1,750 (not sure on shipping)... not really wanting to drop that much coin when I hear of complete 5.3's including the pcm and full harness going for $500 from wrecked trucks.

Saw some good stuff on eBay, saw a 4.8 for $350. Found one close here on Craigslist for $500 but it got some decent miles on it.

Planning on tearing the front clip off, pull fuel tank (replacing with 31 gallon unit) and some other stuff. Gonna be doing the shackle flip, shackle hangers, B52's, ORD engine X-member, both steering box braces then roll the axles under and get the brake plumbing and steering together, I plan on beautifying the firewall and probably putting in a 3/4 ton MC and brake booster. I've got some sheet metal work to do in a few spots that rust is present and I plan on making a fuel tank access hole in the bed, maybe do something fancy with some small hinges and pop rivets?

I don't plan on purchasing a soft top anymore, found a local guy that's gonna sell me his for $70. No fiberglass damage and both windows (solid no sliders) are there and unbroken. I plan on jamming a piece of plexiglass in the rear window channel to hold me over when it's cold out and running some rubber or something to seal the plexiglass to the truck tailgate.

Any pull a parts local to you? I picked up my complete 6.0 intake to oil pan with the core charge for 250. Given finding a 6.0 in a pull a part doesnt happen very often, my local one always has a fresh supply of 5.3s in tahoes and suburbans. Think its another 75 or so for the harness and pcm. btw nice ws6 in the pics with your old k5.

There's a pick a part about 10 mins. away and they suck... really bad. The very few squares they have in there have been picked over and they don't have any newer vehicles, they're like the bottom of the food chain junkyard.

I've heard of some yards around Nashville which is only 45 mins. away so I may look there. I'm looking for a reasonable mileage engine for a reasonable price. If I find something bigger than a 4.8L that's in good shape and reasonably priced i'll jump on it but I'm 100% cool with a 4.8L.

That was a buddy of mine's WS6, pissed oil all around my mailbox...

I've had the best luck with the actual chain pullapart, you can look on there website and see what cars came in within the last week. Just a quick search showed they put out a tahoe at the nashville pap on the 21st, sad part is that it'll probable be pretty stripped by monday. I suggest bringing a lawn mower battery and some jumper cables if you want to check the mileage, personally ive never worried about the mileage on ls motors they seem to be damn near bullet proof as long as they keep oil in them.

I looked through their inventory and saw that Tahoe.

I signed up for their alerts for new vehicles in the yard.

Always nice when local shops are willing to part with their parts stash.

It is. I have to piece it together... no intake, no coils, no serpentine anything, alternator, water pump, p pump...

He was straight forward with me and said it was oil fouling the plug in cylinder 7 every oil change but other than that/ pil consumption it ran really good, no knocks/sounds, no smoking. Maybe blow by? He said it didn't smoke so I don'tthink it could be piston rings?

I've got a buddy who is well versed in LS engines and he said it's probably a valve seal? Some kind of seal... couldnt remember what he called it.

I planned on putting new 4.8 flat top pistons in it to raise compression amd all new piston rings, a TSP cam and some aftermarket heads or a port and polish from a good company.

I never realized how cheap LS parts were, especially used pieces from people upgrading. I signed up on ls1tech and browsed through the classifieds and found some really good deals on stuff.

Should be an interesting learning process and hopefully I come up with an nice engine!

Did some research on the oil consumption and fouled plugs on 5.3's.

I guess in 2007 GM started the DOD/ Active Fuel Management stuff in the engines and they had problems with the PCV.

Pros: It's a 2007 or newer engine.

Cons: Have to buy an AFM delete kit and use a non DOD/AFM cam (planned on cam swap anyway).

Alot of the 07+ motors came with 243 heads, hopefully you get lucky. Ls motors are know to have a crappy pcv system since the beginning, throw a catch can on it and empty it every oil change. Its usually more pronounced in high rpm situations though, lq4 in my old fox body used to see 7200 pretty often and liked to push alittle oil lol. As far as cams go I would look into Brian Tooley or talk to Geoff at EPS, IMO TSP hasnt put anything decent out in years..

I decided to pass on the 5.3 long block that I was looking at picking up... too any pieces that I would have to gather up to have a complete engine.

Found a big time offroad guy in Knoxville, TN that gets all flavors of LS engines on a steady basis. Complete engine (5.3L), full uncut wire harness, PCM and the Drive by Wire or Drive by Cable pedal (whichever matches the engine) and a run on the engine stand to show operation for $850 flat.

He currently has x2 L59's (the Flex Fuel 5.3's) on hand, both Drive by Wire. I told him I'd have the cash on the 15th so I plan on picking it up around then.

So I guess I'll tinker around with what I have in the garage for now instead of getting a shackle flip and the other stuff I mentioned earlier.

I need to get to work on this 14 Bolt, finishing up the disc brakes ans such. I plan on cutting the lower lip off of the diff that hangs below the diff cover and smoothing it over with a flap wheel to gain a little clearance. Still gotta go pick up my free calipers at my buddy's house, he lives about 10 mins. away but I'm too lazy to drive over there so he said he'd bring them into work for me lol.
